I The Coach's Corner I By Ken Johnson MAKING IT WORK Dim are many instances of "making it work" notably Duke's perseverance in winning its first NCAA championship after five previous attempts. The "never quit attitude" is so important in sports in teaching goals, ft takes work, training and desire to win. Concentration, focusing on the job at hand. They certainly did this in the win over Las Vegas and again over Kansas. Possibly the shellacking they took from Carolina in the ACC tournament taught them a lesson. The "big win" over Duke in die AOC didn't make "it work" against Kansas as Fox waa "flat" as was even Dean Smith, the Coach with his two technical fouls and eviction. That was sad for all of us Carolina fans but the unexpected can happen. Anyway, the doctors "made it work" for me when they took out by gall stones on the 18th and my prostrate on the 24th of March. Modern surgery has sure come a long way. ft is good to get that over with. "Making it work" has settled the Umpires strike. The "it" in this case is the "selective ethic" or the leagues "loving the umps." Their pay was raised from 141,000 to $60,000 minimum They cooperated and gave them a four yaaredhttact This is "making it work." ft is overcoming die "situational ethic," which is, each party being selfish for its own sake and not compromising for the sake of the game. ft will be interesting to see if Faldo can "make it work," his anti-social concentration, in trying to win his third Masters this week in Augusta. I don't believe he can.
