The Coach's Corner
By Ken Johnson
1993 WISHES NOT A PIPE DREAM
1 "Forget about the Sat Scores and concentrate on why
the 601 drop outs in Robeson County Schools." No. 1.
Their needs are not being met. No. 2 Their interests are
not being met. No. 3. Their ability to comprehend is not
being met. Diagnostic tests are needed to determine each
individual's needs, interests and his ability to compre
hend. The next thing needed is the wisdom to provide
industrial arts starting in the junior high school and
continuing all through high school. Include home making,
plus family raising responsibilities, music, physical
education.
This means vocational education should be at each
school and not just a single unit as at Dark Branch. It will
take millions to teach these needs, interests and ability to
comprehend but business should help after all these
students are their future. The philosophy is the practical
imperative but economics should not deter the long range
objective of preventing the 600 drop out rate. The only
way is to adopt the "education is Tor all and not the select
few"' as the barrage on education is doing. Sat scores
don't mean a thing for the kids that need a job.
So my 1992 wish is for the Sat scores to be eliminated
and to meet the interests, needs and ability of all U.S.
students not just the select few, brainy students. And take
care of the health, ethical character through sports for all,
vocational efficiency, social efficiency and citizenship. To
eliminate the poverty cycle vocational education shoudl be
the top priority, not Sat scores.
