Kiwanis Clubs Celebrate 79 Years of Community Service
(DM)?Ai Kiwaais International
celebrate* its 79tb birthday on
January 21, 1994, members of this
worldwide community service orga
on the needs of young children, from
prenatal development to age five.
This major service initiative, called
"Young Children: Priority One,"
includes a variety of public aware
ness programs that seek to highlight
the health and safely needs of infants
and young children.
"All Their Shots. While They're
Tots" is the slogan for a major public
education cfuftpnip* on infant iznmu
nizatioo. Up to 60 percent of young
children in some city neighborhoods
and rural areas have not been innoc
ulated for common but dangerous
childhood disease*.
"A growing number of small chil
dren are suffering disability and even
death from contagious diseases that
are totally preventable by immuniza
tion," says Kiwanis International
President Arthur D. Swanberg of
Dallas, Texas. "It may be too late if
parents wait until children reach
school age. Our slogan provides the
best advice: all their shots while
they're tots."
Kiwanis club* are publicizing the
need to immunize every child by age
two with billboards along highways
and city streets, and posters for win
dow and indoor display. Payroll
inserts and postal meter imprints also
carry the Kiwanis immunization
message.
A few months ago, U.S. President
Bill Clinton helped to boost the
Kiwanis campaign with 30-second
spots for television and radio and
public-service ads in major maga
zines such as National Geographic.

Kiwanis clubs are playing a lead

coalitions and campaigns from
California and Texas to Florida and
the Carolines.
The first Kiwanis club was orga
nized in Detroit, Michigan, in 1913.
Kiwanis International marks its 79th
anniversary with 9,000 clubs and
320,000 members in more than 80
nations. During the past year, these
club* conducted more than 130.000 '
different community service pro- 1
jects, for which they raised and spent ;'
some $63 million.
The Kiwsnis motto is "We Build." ?
In addition to a wide variety of com-1
munity service projects, many
Kiwanis clubs also sponsor youth
organizations that provide opportuni
ties for young people to become
involved in service to school and ?
community.
Kiwanis-sponsored Key Clubs are -
active in more than 4,000 high
schools in the United States, Canada,
and a growing number of other
nations. Some 500 college campuses
have Kiwanis-sponsored Circle K -
clubs. Kiwanis International's
newest youth group. Builders Club. "
now has groups in 1,350 junior high
and middle schools.
"Kiwanis clubs continue to serve
every kind of community need ;
through voluntary action," says ~
Swanberg. "But one important way :
to build better communities is to sup- -
port and encourage the next genera
tion of citizens. TTial's what Kiwanis
is doing through Young Children: ;
Priority One and our outstanding -
organizations for teens and young ?
adults."

There's good reason for many; in Robeson
County to consider Dr. Frank Woriax as an old
friend. After all, he is a native son. Bom and
raised here and educated at Pembroke State
University. His medical education took him to
Duke University few a period of time, but after
completing his internship and residency there,
Dr. Woriax came back home.
Since 1979, he has been in private practice.
And since March, he has focused his skills
here at Doctor's Urgent Care Centre.
Here, he is able to care for friends, family
and neighbors when they need him most...
whether if s day or night.
