Many friends of the Center were
present, not only for She AT s good
food but for a chance to hooor Brenda
and Rick Connelly before their
departure and also to hear Bob
Mangum. the Center's first Director
relate how the Center came into being,
the goals it set. and a little of the early
history of the Center in meeting its
goals
Ben Rouse. Superintendent of the
Rockingham District of the United
Methodist Church, delivered the
invocation, then Administrative
Assistant Nancy Ford, who has been
with the Center since its inception,
read a resolution of praise and
thanksgiving to the Connellys from
the Center's Board of Directors
Bishop James Harold Woods, w ho
recently stepped down as Board Chair
after five years, presented plaques to
both Brenda and Rick Connelly He
read the inscriptions on each prior to
the presentation
Brenda isnotortous for never being
without her coffee, whether downstairs
or upstairs or in her office It is said
that the only time she is not sippiny
her coffee is when she cttr'i fnid her
namongst all the paperwork on her

Bob Mangum. the first Director of
the Robeson County Church and
C ommunity Center calledBrendaand
Rick "Godsends" after he was
introduced. He shared a little about
his present assignment as Executive
Director of the Southeastern
Jurisdictional Agency for Native
American Ministries of the United
Methodist Church. Inc at Lake
Junaluska.
Mangum was in Robeson County
for thirty-seven years, ending with the
pastorship at Prospect t hurch In 1968.

the Bishops Fund for Reconciliation
of the United Methodist Church (the
first such project in North Carolina)
Mangum was named the first Director

providing food. fuel. shelter, clothing,
furnishings, transportation, medical

for persons in emergency
circumstances, and to combat social

responsibilities dealing with honor,
respect, education spirituality,
preservation of our "liKiuuiess" We
will work with the tribal chair and
council. We will have a unique
position of not being a political organ
but an ad sot ate for children rod eiders
We need people, men and women
SO yean old and older, to form
committees to work at these projects
1. Children programs Dance,
crafts, regalia making, pot*, baskets
etc.
2. Elders programs 1. Make sure
that all elderly have their needs met.
know where to go to get problems
solved, have a way there and back
(doctors. Social Security office,
pharmacy, etc.). II. Get a Senior
Citizen Social Center where we can
meet with our own age group, talk out
problems, have a meal, watch TV.
play cards,etc. Bring in children from
time to time, socialize and educate
about hmitage.respect. responsibility,
culture, etc.
3 Homework program: I.
Education being what it is some of our
children are slipping through the
cracks. We need a place where they
can come after school and get help in
their studiesby utilizing highergraded
tutors this will teach them
responsibility
4. Finances : Seek our own frtnding
to support our own projects
At this meeting we will be looking
for more ideas, many elders to belong,
and a hope that we can do an honorable
responsible and satisfying job for our
children's future

David L Helton as Campus Police
and Public Safety Director effective
August IS.
Helton replaces Charles Bryant
who will retire after ten years of loyal
service asChiefof the Pembroke State
University police force. Helton is the
Director of University Police at
Gardner-Webb University. Boiling
Springs
The dual role as Campus Police
and Public Safety Director is an
expanded one and consistent with
trends within the University of North
Carolina system.
Dr Oxendine also announced that
Berme Locklear. currently Director
of Physical Plant, will assume
responsibility for the Campus Police
and Public Safety Director. Locklear
replaces Tatty Hutchins. Assistant to
the Chancellor for Legal Affairs, who
has held supervisory responsibility
for more than ten years.
Locklear has experience m security
supervision from his tenure as Director
for Plant Operations and Maintenance
Services of the Metropolitan School
District io Nashville. Tenn
Since joining Pembroke State in
1990. Locklear has chaired me -
Committee on Safetv and Emergency
Procedures Locklear will report
directly to Chancellor Oxendine
concerning police and safety matters
Helton graduated w itha bachelor s
degree in criminal justice from
Gardner-Webb He joined the
Gardner-Webb University police in
1979 as a Crime Prevention Officer
and was promoted to Director of
University Police in I9M
Under his leadership, the crime
prevent loopr o^r am was upgraded and
I supervising ftill time officers and
student w orkersas well as conducting
criminal investigations
Helton organized a campus and
