Lumbee Elders Council Holds Traditional New Year's Gathering

year is celebrated on theapoearance of

Spring. The gathering signifies the
Native American's clebration of the

Creator for the newness of life
Visiting tribes in attendance included
Objiway, Delaware, Choctaw, irowuois.
Cherokee, Catawba, Seneca and Semi
nole. participants came from areas as
Car away as Georgia, Tennessee, Vir
ginia and West Virginia. Not only were
thanks given, but dialogue between
tribes took place taht helped ? bridge
the gap that exists between recognized
and non-recognized tribes.
Ceremonies were a very emotional
experience to some who came with teh
hope of rediscovering heritage all but
lost. Tears of joy flowed as cultural
identity was reborn.
Activities included youth group
singins, drumming and dancing. Tony
Clark graced the event with flute selec
tions and his rendition of the "Sun
Dance" song. All participants joined
hands in the sun-set ceremony to give
thanks to the Creator for the day tha the
Creator had given. Good tidings and
well wishes for a safe journey bom were
given by each elder. Ashes from the fire
were taken to insure an ongoing and
cyclical process with each gathering
The gatherings give participants free
dom to express themselves verbally and
spiritually Non money is ever ex
changed during a gathering. Riches are
abundant in spiritual awareness and
I inter-tribal fellowshipping.

nity The next Lumbee gathering is
scheduled for June 15, 16, 17 and 18,
