LRDA Board of Directors Adopts Resolution To Support Indian Tobacco Farmers At the August meeting of the Board of Directors of LRDA. the Board \ otcd uiianimouslv to adopt a resolution to support Indian tobacco farmers in their struggle to protect their livelihood and the help the tobacco industrv in its struggle with anti-tobacco forces The resolution adopted isas follows Whereas. Indian tobacco farmers have a major stake in the estimated VjO million tobacco product of Robeson Countv. and. Whereas. Indian tobacco farmers provide major economic support to the Lunibcc Tribe, and Whereas, tobacco is a verv important historical!) and cultural!) lotheLumbcc Tribe, and. NC House District 85. ask the North Carolina Department of Transportation to studs the safetv of a major intersection in his district The intersection studied is that of NC 7It) and US 74 between Pembroke and Rowland This dangerous intersection has been the site of several accidents including fatalities iii recent months and vears As a result of precious studies and accidents. DOT iii IW4 upgraded the flashers on all approaches and rcmov ed some channelizing islands in the pav ement area In response to the request of Representative Sutton. DOT recentlv completed a new siudv and their traffic engineers recommend the following I Install black thermoplastic rumble strips on NC 710 on approaches to US 74 to enhance the driv er s aw arcness of the stop conditions 2 Remove overhanging tree limb blocking visibilitv to one flasher at the intersection 3 On existing Stop Ahead " signs on NC 7 III. install traflic actuated flashers to provide increased emphasis for drivers on NC 7 It) to stop 4 Existing (lashers on US 74 are to be changed to become traflic actuated with signs on US 74 to indicate the message ?'Vehicle Entering When Flashing" There are special funds av ailable to complete items 3 & 4 above and tlicv should be completed with the nc\t three months items I & 2 aire' routine maintenance actions not requiring special funding and these too sliould be completed within a short period of time Local residents tell DOT Engineers that excessive speed along US '4 mav hav e been a coniributing factor in some of the accidents DOT will complete a trj/Tic v olunic sludv and speed analv sis and provide the results to the NC Highwav Patrol if increased enforcement is warranted Rcprcscniauv c Sutton commends the new Secrctarv of the Department of Transportation Garland B Garrett.
