Twenty s...and the Pow Wow
GNAA to Sponsor Annual Pow
GREENSBORO - The Guilford
Native American Association is
Eleased to announce that they will
e sponsoring their annual Pow
Wow on September 20 - 22, 1996.
The three day event will be held at
Castle McCulloch in Jamestown.
NC.
GNAA's Pow Wow will feature
dancers representing tribes from
throughout the United States and
Canada. These dancers, ranging
in age from 18 months to 75, will
complete for prize money in seve ral
different dance categories.
This year, the Pow Wow has
been extended one day - Friday.
September 20 through Sunday.
September 22. It will officially
begin Friday, September 20 with
the Opening Ceremony at 7:00 pm
21 at 10:00 am with various
activities including inter-tribal
dancing, specialty dancing featuring
The Ximalli Aztec
Dancers of Mexico, dance and
drum competition, arts and crafts
competition, honoring ceremonies
and a gospel singing. Food vendors
will be on hand throughout the
weekend selling traditional Indian
frybread and tacos in addition to
many other types of food.
The Pow Wow begins on
Sunday. September 22 at 11:00 am
with (jospel Singing from 12:00
Noon -1:00 pm. Dance and drum
competition will continue
throughout the day. Prize money
will be awarded to the top dancers
in each category during the closing
ceremony.

Northern Exposure Currently
residing in Los Angeles. CA.
Apesanahkwat has been acting for
the past thirteen years. He has had
feature roles in movies such as
Sioux City, co-starring with Lou
Diamond Philips Apesanahkwat
is also a traditional dancer
Our host drum, made up of
singers from all over North
Carolina, will be Southern Sons
Our head dancers will be Ray
Jacobs, from Bolton. NC and a
member of the Waccamaw-Siouan
Tribe and April Whittemore of
Fayetleville and a member of the
Lumbee-Cheraw T ribc.

Connie Locklcar Jones. M.D .
has joined the staff of Southeastern
Regional Medical Center She is a
family practitioner associated with
the JulianT. Pierce Health Center
in Pembroke.
A native of Robeson County,
Dr. Jones grew up in the Prospect
community. She ts the daughter of
Bill R. and Jessie L. Locklear
' 'I have always planned to come
back to my community and practice
medicine in this rural area," she
said.
? She is a-graduite of UNC-'
Pembroke and holds a master's
degree in organic chemistry from
N.C. Central University in
Durham. She earned her medical
degree from East Carolina
University School ofMcdicine and
completed her training in
Fayetteville at the Duke/
Fayetteville AHEC family
residency program in June of this
year.
Dr. Jones, her husband Terry,
and their 4 year-old-son Colby live
in Pembroke.
Along with her associates Dr.
Tonya Hudson, Dr. Joey Bell, and
Family Nurse Practitioner Bobby

The weekly meeting was held at
the Town and Country Restaurant
on Tuesday evening at 7:0() PM
with President Bob Lowry

Dexter Brooks who explained tnc
very- extensive details that some
court eases entail This case in
particular involved a juvenile
injured in a car accident with a
fractured skull, his mother making
a left turn was at fault. Doctors,
lawyers, parents, witnesses all had
to be questioned in order for him to
come up with a decision. It was
truly very interesting to hear Judge
Brook's logical analysisofthc case,
and arriving at a decision

Mansfield was voted into the
membership. He was presented by
Attorney Brian Brooks. His home
is in Pembroke. He is a graduate of
the UNC Law School in Chapel
