Let's-continue with-our stud> of
faith and grace Grace is not the
i r resistible power of God that secures
or assures salvation for those selected
to receive faith, that would be
considered predestination god did
not send grace to make the tips os
men and women praise Him while
their minds and hearts continue to
live in sin The Lord did not extend
grace to make sin acceptable to God
but to make men and women acceptable
to God by destroying sin Helping
God to accomplish the work of
grace is the divine-human cooperation
called faith Let's illustrate the
relationship between grace and faith
with the story of Cain and Abel found
in Genesis 4. God had already instituted
the plan of salvation and had
instructed Adam how it was to be
carried out Grace was found in the
promise of Jesus' future sacrifice,
and it was to be made very real to the
sinner by the sacrifice of a lamb
which symbolized Christ's future
sacrifice, this sacrifice part w^s the
faith that the sinner had to snoV in
the promised future true sacrifice of
Jesus. Notice in chapter 4:4 that the
Lord had respect unto Abel's offering.
it had met the specification that
God had given for proper worship
and forgivpness. Notice in verse 3
that Cain brought vegetables etc. for
his offering to God and in verse 5 we
see that God did not respect Cain's
offering. We see that while each had
taken their offerings to God. Abel
obeyed God by bringing a Lamb according
to what God had asked, but
Cain decided that he could worship
' and offer to God his own choice of
sacrifice, and even though he was
sincere in his heart, his offering did ,
not appropriate the grace of God
because it did not carry out God's
plan and specification for grace to be
applied This was before there was a
Jew, before the sanctuary system had
been given to Moses by God, yet it
was still to show that the remission of
sins had to come through the blood of
the innocent lamb which represented
Christ (Matt. 26.28, Heb. 9:22)
God provides the grace, while we
must have the faith. God gives enough
evidence for us to make a choice and
a leap from simple facts into an expression,
of faitn, that we will live
according to His desires found in the
Bible The sinner is selected to receive
grace when he mect$ with conditions
offailh. Those who put on the
armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-13).
those who fight the good fight (1
Timothy 6:12;2 Tim. 4:7) that are
faithful to God (Daniel 6:'4. 1
Corinthians 4:2)1, watching unto
prayer (1 Peter 4:7), searching the
scriptures (John 5:39), having faith
continually (Dan. 6:16), those who
are obedient to every word which
proceeds out of the mouth of God
(Luke 4:4). The provisions of grace
are free to all; the results of grace will
be enjoyed by those who have com
plied witn the conditions ol faith A
true appreciation of the plan of salv ation
will fill us with wonder and lo\c
Our hearts will be so melted with the
love that Jesus has manifested toward
us that wc cannot be taken up
with the affairs of this world When
Christ is abiding in the heart and we
have a true conception of the sacrifice
that he has made, we shall talk
"about it We shall understand something
of the perfection of the law that
he came to magnify and make honorable
The privilege of obedience will
seem precious and gracious to our
souls We shall take no delight in the
teaching of those w ho seek to make of
no effect the law of God We want
that intelligent faith that has the
word of God as its foundation, that
leads in the path of righteousness,
and makes every step a step Heavenward.
Everything that God could do
has been done that we might obtain
salvation from sin and destruction
Now it depends upon us whether or
not wc will accept of the conditionsof
his mercy and co-opcralc with his
divine aid. and gain eternal life
"Without faith it is impossible to
please him; for he that comclh to God
must believe that he is. and that he is
a rcwardcr of them that diligently
seek him " There arc many in the
Christian world who claim that all
that is necessary to salvation is to
have faith; works arc nothing, faith is
the only essential But God's word
tells us that faith without works is
dead, being alone Many refuse to
obey God's commandments, y et they
make a great deal of faith But faith
must havca foundation. God'spromwe
do his will, if we walk in truth,
then we may ask what wc will, and it *
shall be done unto us. While we
earnestly endeavor to be obedient.
God will hear our petitions; but he
will not bless us in disobedience In
order to have the benefits of God's
grace, we must do our part, we must
faithfully work, and bring forth fruits
meant for repentance Notice Matthew
7;21 (read chapter 7:13-28) it is
the ones who do the w ill of God in
heaven that can enter therein

Mclntyre to Unveil Campaign
Finance Reform Package
Seventh District Congressman
Mike Mclntyre today introduced a
campaign finance bill to help curb
the out-of-control spending in campaigns
and bring relief to a system
that is out of touch with the American
people "TheU S> Congress has
an obligation to help restore public
confidence and integrity in the political
process." Congressman
MclNtyrc staled "Meaningful reform
is long over due and lam pleased
to help lead the effort to ensure that
public service is still about serving
the people." McliUyrc. along with
many members of the Democratic
Coalition, unveiled the legislation
which is known as the Federal Flection
Reform Act of 1997
Congressman Mclntyre continued.
" I bclicv c that one of the reasons
the people of the Seventh District
elected me to serve them was to be a
part of the solution, not the problem
Our political system should be one
that attracts the best and brightest to
public service, but unfortunately
many talented individuals arc deterred
because the sy stem has been
one that requires a constant readiness
of excessive funding exorbitant
lev els of money have permeated
the political process and have only
served to distort our democracy We
ill least owc llic American people a
s>sicm rtial provides a fair pl;i> 11111
Held and docs not undermine the
abihtv of ordinarv cili/cns to be an
integral pari of their government
One of the ore prov ision s of the
legislation will establish ;i $7ihi.(hmi
campaign spending limit for a Congressional
race high enough to allow
an effective level of competition
and low enough to circumscribe the
most cgregiouslv lirgh spenders
Additionally u will eliminate soil
money in federal elections?money
directly from corporate coffers and
other organizations that has been far
from accountable in the past This
legislation will allow the freedom of
parlies or independent groups to gel
out their message, but it will finally
close the loophole so that groups thai
arc clearly designed to influence federal
elections w ill be qov crcdby comparable
standards and disclosure requirements
Congressman Mclntyrc. a member
of the Coalition's Campaign Finance
Reform Task Force, further
commented. "1 believe this legislation
reflects a growing sentiment
among m> constituency to tackle the
issue of campaign finance, and I am
grateful for the opportunity to take a
positive role in making this happen
