I H.izfT&ctioits > L by Alta Nye Oxendine PR* YER AND BIBLE STL'DY In ll>56. When 1 came to Pembroke. I began helping the pastors of arc Indian Methodist churches with their Sunda> school, south and women's programs The churches 1 worked w ith in Robeson Counts were First Methodist. Pembroke. Old Prospect. Sands Plains. Pleasant Grose and Ashpolc Center Fairness in South Carolina, ssas too small at the time to hasc separate programs for the svomcn and youth Many readers of this column os cr the past nearly 21 scars hasc been members of one or another of those six churches. They, and a lot of other readers, may wonder why I've been reading and writing sop many "secular" books, magazines, and newspapers, while neglecting to mention the Bible AN INSPIRED BOOK Many Christians believe that EVERY word in the Bible ssas inspired by the Holy Spirit Other Christians believe that the people who wrote down he books of the Bible svcrc men ssilh human failings (Das id. for instance) xvho sscrc forgiven and had been inspired by God to share w hat they had learned from their own experiences, or front stories originally passed down by xxord of mouth from one generation to the next. Either way. 1 believe the Bible ssas inspired by God. We knots that manuscripts containing booksoflhe Bible were painstakingly copied by hand by monks who believed they HAD to be preserved. then later put into print by the inventor of the printing press. In any ease, the Bible is different from other books, even from holy books in other religions. In studying > 1 religions of ihc world I learned thai the Christian religion (though based 011 the Jewish religioni goes FARTHER than an other in setting moral standards and showing LOVE for others Of course those of us who consider ourselves followers of Jesus Christ often fail to lisc up to His example and teaching, giv tng Christianas a bad name But I believe that Jesus' was offers bs far the GREATEST fulfillment in this life and in the life to cone We can escn communicate w ilh the founder of our religion' L1MNC, CHURCH In 19871 was shocked to read that he Communist Party (or "Cull") had first attacked my own northern denomination (as an experiment) before infiltrating other chui^lfbrganizations in various cotmTTTcVTfOund the world, through the so-called "LIVING CHURCH." a beautiful but totally MISLEADING name! Coyld this possible be true? I thought about how I had planned to join the Socialist Party and how suspicious I had been of Capitalism Where did these ideas come from'' I decided 1 HAD to start out on ntv own personal "treasure hunt" for the REAL truth about what had been going on in THIS country for 70_ years, ever since the Bolshevik lake over in Russia Mistakenly I thought 1 could accomplish that task in a couple of months Now it's been 10 years. BACK TO THE BIBLE I believe that all we human beings do should fit into the guidelines of the Bible and direct guidance through sincere prayer. FALSE TEACHERS In any case. 1 have been extremely concerned about false teachers and false prophets in the anti-God Com mil m si Cull I believe we need loi.onip.irc wh.n we see on TV read, or hear \\ uh ihc leachiiigs ol ihe Bible And thai we need lo ask God's guidance in EVERY! MING, then wail 10 hear what HE wants us lo do Emergency Funds for Indian Housing HUD has announced that approximately $1 26 Million in competitive grants arc available to American Indian Tribes and Alaskan Natives Villages for the use of repairs to existing shelters, to build more shelters, supplement operating cost of facilities. and to provide social serv ices to homeless persons Applications arc due b\ May 23. 1997 For more information, call 1-800735-3239 Ask for CDS 10071 4PP Project Hope Helps in Emergencies Project Hope (Helping Out People in Emergencies) is offering assistance in dealing with hurricane related stress and/or problems.
