Wanda Kay. Byron's "Mama." ' Once again. 1 remember how excited 1 Was on Flag Day, 1960, to be awake for the birth of my first child For nine months, as he was developing inside mc. I had experienced whatbccominga mothcrmeans. Now F was meeting my baby boy face to face. > - Like Byron. Donny was soon-an extremely active, alert little fellow always ready to learn and explore And yet, 1 still find myself calling Byron "Gordon" from time to time! Healing Re-living memories of my own lyvoJaoys is a bittersweet experience. Although it was easier to keep them In the BACK of my mind before Byron was born, thinkingaboutthem more often is helpful to the ongoing long term healing process. 17-Years This month marks 21 years since 1 began this column, and 17 years since our family's accident. . To the Editor: On June 9, 1997, Henry B. Brewer. a Lumbee Tribal enrolled member. entered the LRDA office to re ceive an application to apply for the North Carolina Indian Commission seat for District III and discovered that he would be mandated to take an "Oath of Representation to serve for the LRDA Board of Directors" and not the Lumbee Tribe. He could not sign that oath with good faith that he could serve the interest of the Lumbee Tribe. Henry decided to get a copy of the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs policy and procedures to review and discovered that the policy procedure or General Statue 143b-407. (a) stated. "These Indian members shall be selected by tribal or community consent from the Indian groups that are recognized by the State of North Carolina and are principally geographically located as follows: the Lumbees of Robeson, Hoke and Scotland Counties ... " The N.C. statue did not say that an oath would have to be signed through LRDA in order to get the right to serve on the N.C. Indian Commission. The discovery is that the Lumbee rights are slowly taken away from us because we allow LR' DA to add mandates that gives them the rights to have total control of our rights and for some our everyday lives. Henry decided to make an application by striking through all the wording in the application that stated he would be mandated to serve the interest of the LRDA Board of Directors. The application was turned in on June 10. 1997 and Hen -ry explained to the LRDA Director James Hardin that he had a grievance with the application process and James Hardin said that the LRDA Election Committee would have to review it to make a decision. On Saturday, June 28. 1997, Henry received a certified letter in the mail that he had been denied the nghi to run lor the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs because he would not accept the mandate to serve in the interest of the LRDA Board "of Directors. Henry decided that this is an issue that needs to be changed so he wrote a letter to the following people asking for the right to run for the Indian Commission without the LRDA oath: James Hunt, North Carolina Governor; Greg Richardson. Executive Director of Indian Commission; Mike Easeley, N.C. Attorney General and all the N.C. Indian Commission members. Henry has asked the Commission to give him a reply and to also suspend the election until his grievance has been reviewed for an answer of good or bad merit. What do you think? Should Henry have to fight for his Lumbce Rights? Do you know that this right was also your rights? Should you get involved to help make a change? Now is the time and chance!!!! We should speak out and let our voices be heard! Henry has made a loud cry that should be joined by all Lumbees to let agencies like LRDA know that we are the Lumbee Tribe and not an agency representing or serving a Board of Directors. Make a change, get involved! Sincerely . David Lowerv JobReady Program Not Good for Children To the Editor: I recently attended a briefing at the state legislature and learned that over $6 billion of our tax dollars arc going to the federal government and then coming back to approximately 18 state agencies with federal strings attached and bypassing the N.C. State Legislature. Of the more than $6 billion, $30 million is coming to the Governor's Workforce Preparedness Commission for the state's JobReady program, which will include all students. Children as early as II to 13 years-of-age will be asked to choose career paths. ' The program advertises that employers will be able "to grow their m -W m m> own employees" in our schools, and that employers are to be "equal partners" with parents. I Find this very objectionable and hope all concerned citizens reading this will contact me for further information, and that you will also contact Rep. Yongue to express your concern. Let us stand up for our children's future with the freedom and liberty | principles which belong to the par- | ents regarding educating our children through K-12. Then let the child have the freedom and liberty in making a choice on their own for a career path... i Jerri Howell ' Lumberton ( Say You Read It In The Carolina \ Indian Voice.
