The. _ 5 Qunday School Lesson ^ i by Jow R. Brayboy i Sallm Missionary Baptist Church Running from God Jonah I:J?J, 1-15. 17. 2:1, 10 ilutline I Jonah s Commission (Jonah 1.12) II Jonah's Flight and Storm at Sea (Jonah 13-4) III Calming the Storm (Jonah 1:1015) IV Jonah Inside the Great Fish (Jonah I 17. 2.1. 10) /. Jonah's Commission (Jonah 1:1-2) Our lesson this week is taken from the book of Jonah. How appropriate a title for our lesson. Running From God. Jewish tradition claims that Jonah was the son of the widow of Zarephath whom Elijah raised from the dead. God called upon Jonah to deliver a message to Nincvah. He was a prophet from the North Kingdom, born and raised near Nazareth. God instructed Jonah to go to Ninevah and preach to them and warm them of the pending wrath of God that they were facing. God saw the wickedness of Ninevah and it was progressively getting -worse. Ninevah was the Capital of the Assyrian Empire. II. Jonah's Flight and Storm at Sea (Jonah 1:1-2) Jonah's response to God's call was to go to Tarshish instead of Ninevah The Ninevites were enemies of Israel and Jonah wanted to see them destroyed. For some reason. Jonah thought like many people that he could gel away from the presence of the Lord if he went in another direction from where he was instructed to go. In this scripture (verse 3) it says that Jonah went down Anvtime God's ?oplc 10 contrary 10 the wilt oi uod. he> are going down spintuallv Many lmes lost people under the com icung lower of God try to run from Him hrough various things, such as dcohol. sex. gambling, etc things fiat they think will detract them trom he call of God jonah found out the hard way that tie could not escape from the presence of the Lord Contrary to what folk think sometimes. God is evcrvwhere God sent a storm to the \crv sea and boat in which Jonah was traveling The storm was so bad that it almost destroyed the boat When people try to run from God the\ arc almost always headed for trouble III. Calming the Storm (Jonah 1:10-15) When a person is disobedient to Go many time sit affects the welfare of others. The men on board the ship with Jonah were aware that something was wrong before Jonah recognized it. Sad to say. but when folks are out of the willofGod. many times lost people recognize things that are wrong before the Christian does. When confronted by the sailors about the storm that was raging upon the sea. Jonah admitted that he was the problem God has a way of getting the attention of people, whether saved or unsaved, jonah got a reality check when he was awakened form his sleep The sailors wanted to know how to escape the w rath of God that was upon them. Jonah knew he was the problem and the way to stop the storm was to get him off the ship. The men on board the ship were more compassionate toward Jonah than he had been toward the people of Ninevah It is a sad commentary on the people of God w hen the w orld has more compassion than God's people. The sailors tried hard to get the ship to shore, but were unable to get it to land. After much struggle and realizing thev were going to lose their lives if they did not get Jonah off the ship, they elected to throw him overboard Before throwing Jonah over, they petitioned the Lord not to charge them with innocent blood because they wanted to save their own lives. As ? soon as Jonah was thrown over Door a the storm ceased /K Jonah Inside the Great Fish The Lord had prepared a great fish to Latch Jonah w hen he was throw n overboard. God was teaching Jonah a lesson because of his unw illingness to do what God wanted him to do The great fish swallowed Jonah and he was in the fish s belly three days In the midst of his trouble. Jonah had ume to think about his situation, cned out to the Lord tor forgiveness and repented God theii sent the fish to dry land to vomit him up Jonah in his trouble recognized that salvation os of the Lord. Jesus made reference to Jonah in Matthew and likened himself to him in fact, that as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days so must the Son of God be in the earth for three days. All can learn something from this lesson, saved or unsaved, (n the midst of trouble, we may find that God is only a prayer away. Lost person, the Lord is calling you to repentance. Do not wait until you get in trouble like Jonah to cry out. You can avoid heartaches arid pain by accepting Jesus Christ as your savior now. Remember your response to Jesus affects others. "No man liveth to himself and no man dicth to himself, whether we live or die. was are the Lord's." God bless you. Pray for us. The Eagle The mist rose over the mountain top In the distance the cry of the wolf is heard The Eagle soars on the currants of wind Slowly rising to the clouids Wings shifting Flying this way and that Sailing in the sky For in the distance silvery lake gleams The eagle dives toward the lake. Claws outstretched Skimming the water Wings flapping, hooving. striking A trout is caught Raising above the lake w ith pride Gliding to the bank Landing with trout in tow Water lapping. Birds singing. A young warrrior approaches Kneeling in front of the eagle With outstrcachcd arms Grandfather A shimmering light glows The eagle changes shape An old man stands Tout in hand "Grandson." the catch was good Singing Thy>- Feathers According to Scripture 1 Sponsored by Pembroke Seventh Dav Adventist Church Please notice in the follpwing \crscs that the purpose for ancient Israel parallels God's purpose for us as spiritual Israel today, to repent from our past sins and to obey God fully with His strength. jcremiah 36:3 "It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil w hich I purpose to do unto them: that they may return every man from his cvii way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin." Ezckicl 11:20 "That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be im people, and I will be their God." . Zcph. 3:13 "The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies: neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down and none shall intake them afraid." Mark 2:21 "No man also sew clh a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up lakclh away from the old. and the rent is made worse And no man puttclh new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth tburst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles." Mark 12:9 "What shall therefore the Lord of the \ ineyard do? He w ill conic and destroy the husbandmen, and will give (he vineyard unto others " Mark 12:12 "And they sought to lay lioldon him. but feared lite people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them; and they left him and went their way ." 0 Docs God have to have literal seed (fleshy) to fulfill His promise to Abraham? Luke 3:8-9 "Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves We have Abraham to our fathers; for 1 say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the Hrc. Here isan example that Jesus set forth to the Jew s as to w hat might happen if they should reject Him. . Luke 4:26-29 "But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarcpla. a city ofSidon. untoa w oman that was a widow And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian And all they in the sy nagoguc.'when they heard these things were filled w ith wrath. And rose up and thrust I him out of the city and led him unto the brow of the hill w hereon their city was built, that they might cast him ciown.ncaaiong." I ukc 11:50-51 "That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world nias be required of this generation: from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zaeharias. which perished between the altar and the temple. vcril> I sa> unto >011 it shall be required of this generation " Luke 13:8-9 "And he answering said unto him. Lord, let it alone this year also, (ill I shall dig about it and dung it; and if it bear fruit, well; and if not. then after that thou shall cut it down." Luke 13:28 "There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall sec Abraham and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God. and you yourselves trust out." Luke 14:24 "For I say unto you. that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper." Luke 20:16-19 "He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard toothers. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. And he beheld them and said, what is this then that is written. The stone which the builders rejected,, the same is become the head of the corner? Whosoever shall fall unto that stone shall be broken; but on w hoinsocver if shall fall, it will grind him to powder. And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people; for they perceived that the had spoken this parable against them." I suppose that the same thing would happen today if Jesus were to say that your church or my chinch w ere goi ng to be destroyed because we had not been living up to the light (knowledge) that had been shown across our paths Jesus would once again be throw n out of our church(es). for we would not like it if we were going to have Gods special favor withdrawn from us. But, that is exactly what can and will happen to my church that lias knowledge of the truth and then rejects it. We will look at this ore next week Catch the Spirit of the West!
