This issue we will talk about how
genus are spread and some ways to
help decrease the spread of infectious
d'scascs
Nose, mouth and cy c secretions arc
the most common sources of respiratory
infections, such as the common
cold These secretions arc usually
spread by contaminated hands or
something by kissing Young children
are especially prone to spreading
these infections because they handle
and mouth everything they can get
their hands on
Droplets that spread through the
air by coughing or sncc/ing arc a less
common means of transmitting respiratory
infections Droplets can travel
up to six feet Fecal contamination of
hands or other objects accounts for the
spread of most diarrhea, as well as
infectious hepatitis. Unlike urine,
which is usually sterile, bowel movements
arc composed of up to 50%
bacteria
The discharge from sores such as
chickcnpox and fever blisters can be
contagious Most red rashes w ithoul a
discharge do not spread by skin contact
Contaminated food or water accounted
for many epidemics in earlier
times Even today some foods commonly
contain bacteria that cause diarrhea
Around 5(>%of all raw turkey
and chicken contains germs that can
cause this illness E Coli, a germ that
can cause bloody diarrhea, can be
found i n about 20%of ground beef By
contrast, despite all the media hype,
less than 1% raw eggs arc contaminated
with the salmonella germ
Contaminated utensils such as
bottles and dishes can occasionally
spread respiratory or intestinal infections
Contaminated objects such as
combs, brushes, and hats can spread
lice.- ringworm of the scalp, or
impetigo
With all these ways to contact infectious
agents, it is a wonder we all
aren't sick all the time! Next week we
will talk about ways to help prevent
the spread of infectious diseases.
Take care and we'll talk again next

Wilmington Port/Harbor Receives
Full Federal Funding - $8.3 Million
Washington, uc ?Congressman
Bill Hefner and Congressman Mike
Mclntyrc officially announced today
that the Wilmington Port has received
full funding in the amount of $8.3
million by the U.S. House Energy and
Water Appropriate Subcommittee
Congressman Bill Hefner stated
"This funding is a victory for the Port
of Wilmington, and the state of commerce
in North Carolina as a w hole It
will broaden shipping capabilities,
bring larger vessels into the harbor
and push the state further into the
international economy: I was pleased
to work with the Appropriations Committee.
Mr Mclntyrc. and other members
of the North Carolina congressional
delegation in accomplishing
this."
Congressman Mike Mclnlvre
slated. "The Port of Wilmington Is a
vital component of North Carolina's
economy. I am pleased that the House
Appropriations Subcommittee has
agreed lothis important funding level,
and 1 remain committed to ensuring
that this figure becomes law In addition.
I would like to specifically thank
Congressman Hefner and the entire
N.C. congressional delegation for their
support in this matter"
Erik Strombcrg. Executive Director
of the N.C Ports Authority said.
"Deepening the Cape Fear River to 42
feel is vital to the future of the Port of
Wilrn i ngton. if we arc going to attract
new customers, as well as to maintain
our current business It is impossible
to overstate the importance of the key
leadership pro\ ided b> Congressmen
Hefner and Mclntvre to secure funding
which will allow the deepening
project to proceed on schedule The
additional $7.0 million in the House
appropriation will supplement the $5.3
million in the President's budget proposal
and give IhcU.S Army Corpsof
Engineers a total of $8.3 million for
necessary design and mitigation work
this^ycar"
For the coming fiscal year, the
Clinton Administration had budgeted
only $5.3 million which would have
seriously delayed the time line for
channel widening, deepening, and
harbor improvements In March of
this year, the entire N.C. congressional
delegation sent a letter to the
Appropriations Committee asking for
full funding of this important project
The Corpsof Engineers had estimated
that full funding during FY 199V *
would allow the project lobe complete
two years ahead of schedule in 2006
instead of 2008
Deepening the navigation channel
at the Port from 38 feet to 42 feet will
fundamentally enhance the delivery
of international cargoes to and from
business, industry, and consumers
throughout the nation Moreover, a
deeper channel for the Port will provide
significant strategic mobiliza- .
tion benefits to both the State Port,
private businesses, and the Military
Ocean Terminal at Sunny Point With
a 42-foot channel, the Port of
Wilmington can continue to serve as
a major cast coast gateway to the
world for decades to conic
The U.S. House Appropriations .
Committee is scheduled to meet this \
week to consider the FY 1999 Energy ,
and Water appropriations measure
After that, the measure goes to the full
