Even. man. woman, and child that is living upon the face of the earth, or has ever lived, is scheduled to appear before the judgment seat ofChrist. However, some people say it does not make am difference \Utat you do?that God is too good and merciful to destroy sinners Will God give sinners a second chance to repent after the judgment'.' M ill a time ever come when it is too late to be accepted? Elder Joseph Bullard addresses these important questions as he opens the Bible to our understanding in this Search for Truth. Every man. woman, and child that is living upon the face of the earth, or ever has lived, is scheduled to appear before the judgment seat of Christ. 2 .Corinthians 5:10: "For we must all appear before the judgment seat ofChrist: that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." We are living in a time when God is urging man to repent and prepare for the judgment. Acts 17:30-31: "And the times ofthis ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man w hom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men. in that he hath raised him from the dead." The Judgment is now in session. When did it begin? Daniel 8:14: "And he said unto me, I nto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." Today there are millions of Christians who have no idea what Jesus is doing now. Psalm 77:13: "Thy way. O God. is in the sanctuary." This daily or continual ministration was performed every day throughout the year. Hebrews 9:2-7: "For there was a tabernacle made; the first wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread: which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden potlhat had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly . Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishingthe serviceofGod. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people." So, let us look closely at the ritual of the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16:7i 10: "And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat. And Aaron shaft bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shaft be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat ' into the wilderness." The cleansing of the earthly sanctuary on the Day of Atonement has its counterpart in the heavenly sanctuary. Hebrews 8:1-2: "Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man." Is it necessary to cleanse the heavenly sanctuary? Hebrews 9:23: "It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with bener sacrifices than these." On the cross, Jesus shed His blood for you and for me. but now it is being applied through the ministry of our Mediator, Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:24-27; "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us." If we confess our sins, he is faithful andjust toforgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." John the Beloved looked forward to the time ofjudgment. Revelation 14:6j: "...FearGod,andgiveglorytohim;forthehourofhisjudgmentiscome: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." The Bible makes it very clear that when Jesus returns, the verdict has already beenmade.andHebringsHisrewardswithHim. Revelation22:11-12: "Hethat is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy * still. And, behold, 1 come quickly: and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be." Books are going to be opened. Revelation 20:12: "And I saw the dead, smal I and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works." Secrets will be revealed in the judgment Matthew 12:36; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shaft speak, they shaft give account thereof in the Day of Judgment." "Letushearthe conclusion ofthe whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: forthisisthe whole duty of man. For God shaft bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." The standard ofthejudgment is God's Law. James2:10-12: "For whosoever shaft keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of aft. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shaft be judged by the law of liberty." At some point 1 realized that the ye?ir 2000 has no Sunday, March 20! I thought 1 could figure out the right date without checking a calendar. As the rest of you likely know, that Sunday fell on March 19! Springtime Wonderland It may lack thedouble" W" alliteration of "Winter Wonderland". And, in my case, childhood memories are a lot less repetitive. But spring is still my favorite time of the year! One of my early memories of spring in Montana takes me back to the farming community of Fromberg. There are four images: my father standing on freshly-plowed brown dirt, a yellow meadow lark, wild flowers, and me (at six or seven) wearing a new blue (or maybe yellow) Easter dress. This mental picture may be a composite of several different incidents. But I doubt that I had a new Easter frock more than once or twice during all the depression years. My parents were fortunate to have friends who seemed happy to pass on their older children's out-grown clothes, usually out-of-style, but made of good quality cloth. That spring time memory has persisted for over 60 years. Maybe I had just walked outside to show Daddy the pretty new dress 1 was planning to wear to church on Easter. (Every so often, I find myself wanting to ask Mother how She remembers a particular incident!) Carolina Springtime One day in the mid-fifties while I was still livingand working in Caswell County, in northern North Carolina, the assortment of vivid colors 1 was passing really got to me as I drove along farm fields to Danville, Virginia, just across the state line. I made up a simple poem and called it "Carolina Springtime". But, for forty years the spectacular reds, pinks, and pastel colors of azaleas, camellias, dogwood blossoms, wisteria, and redbud blossoms, along with the fresh green leaves, here in Robeson County (close to the South Carolina border) have been evoking a response so deep down inside that it's difficult to describe. When I focus on all the natural beauty of each place where I've lived, I can't help wondering why I spent so much of my twenty-first year asking myself: "Is God really Real;? Or just a figment of my imagination?" How could all these magnificent wonders around us just jump into being without a master Designer? I Pediatric Pointers I by Dr. Joey Bell. Pembroke Pediatrics \N hat is Jaundice of the Ness born? Ry Rick Emery, Physician Assistant Student Hello, I am a physician assistant student doing a pediatric rotation w ith Dr. Joey BeFl and the rest of the nice people at the Pembroke Pediatric Clinic here in the Heart of Lutnbee Indian Country. It is a pleasure to be here and I am grateful to Dr. Bell for lettingme assist and learn in the medical treatment of the beautiful children of his practice. Jaundice ofthe Newborn is a treatable condition seen in many new babies. Before discussing jaundice found in newborns, we should first answer what is jaundice? In humans, jaundice is a temi that is used to describe an abnormal yellowing ofthe skin and the white area of the eyes called the sclera. This color change is caused by increased amounts of a naturally occurring yellow pigment called bilimbin. This pigment is always produced during the normal breakdown of red blood eel Is and our livers then usually release this it into our intestines so' that it can be excreted with our urine and bowel movements. However, if the normal rate of this discharge is slowed, the yel low pigment backs up and elevated levels in our bodies are then physically exhibited as jaundice. Jaundice of the Newborn can be harmless or severe, depending on its cause. The amount of yellowness in a baby is best judged by viewing a newborn unclothed in natural light front a window. Causes of Jaundice in the Newborn include physiological jaundice, breast-feeding' jaundice, breast-milkjaundice, orasevere condition that is called "blood group incompatibility". Physiological or "normal" jaundice can occur in many new babies who are fed by bottle. In newborns a slower processing of bilirubin into their intestines from their immature livers causes this jaundice. A yellow tint to a baby's skin and sclera will then appear 2-3 days after it is bom. High levels of bilirubin in this type of jaundice are considered harmless and usually disappear in 1-2 weeks. Treatment for this condition involves bottle-feeding a baby more often. Increasing feeding times to every 2-3 hours to increase the natural excretion of a baby's waste products helps clear this up. Any excessive bilirubin is thus removed naturally. Also helpful is to undress an affected baby (except, of course, for its diaper) and place it near a window during daylight hours. The baby's skin can then absorb some direct sunlight through the window. This is known as "phototherapy". It results in chemically altering the bilirubin so that at may be more easily excreted in an infant's urine and stools. Breast-feeding jaundice occurs when a baby does not drink enough breast milk. The "yellowing" symptoms are similar to those seen in physiological jaundice, but are probably much more pronounced. The usual remedy for this is to nurse the baby more often, every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours is probably sufficient. Supplementing breast-feeding with formula is also helpful. A substance found in some mothers' breast milk causes breast-milk jaundice. The substance is a protein enzyme that inhibits the absorption of bilirubin in a baby's intestines. This type of jaundice begins on days 4-7 after an infant's birth and may last up to 3-10 weeks. In this instance, increasing breast feeding may not always bring down a baby's level of yellowing. Alternating breast-feeding with formula feeding every 2-3 dayshelpsinremovingbilirubin. This type of jaundice is not harmful and once the yellowing clears, the mother can return to full breast-feeding without having to worry about the jaundice coming back. Blood uroup incompatibility, sometimes called "Rh or ABO" problems, can cause severe jaundice in newborns. This happens if a mother and her newborn have different blood tvpes from each other. The mom will then produce antibodies that will destroy a new baby's red blood cells. This type of jaundice is easy to identify because, unlike other jaundices, it is seen within the first 24 hours of a baby's life. This is a very preventable complication. Today women who are predisposed to blood group incompatibility problems are identified during their first pregnancy and are given"RhoGAM injections that can help prevent this from happening in later pregnancies. The injections prevent the mother from forming antibodies that would otherwise hurt future babies. Severe jaundice is treated using advanced techniques of treatment. These include lowering bilirubin levels with artificial phototherapy (usually a blue light that breaks down the bilirubin in the skin). Rarely, when bilirubin reaches dangerous levels, blood transfusions are needed. The baby's blood is exchanged with fresh blood to lower the levels of bilirubin. Depending on the following signs and symptoms, parents should either take their child in for immediate evaluation and treatment of jaundice regardless of the time or day or wait until regular office hours to have their infant looked at. If any of the following instances should occur, parents should take their baby to see their provider during regular office hours. The baby looks a deep yellow or orange color. The baby is not getting enough milk or gaining weight well. The baby has less than three good-sized bowel movements per day. The baby has less than six wet diapers per day. Any previously identified physiological jaundice is not gone from the baby by day 14. Parents should take their child immediately in for evaluation and treatment if they observe any of the following signs and symptoms. Signs of dehydration in an infant. Jaundice developing within the first24 hours of an infant's life.. A baby develops a fever over 100.4 F (38 C). The baby starts to look or act sick.
