Reflections by Alta Nye Oxendine WINNING AND LOSING Did the Sooners really LOSE in their final NCAA basketball tournament? Did Kansas really lose? -fff Hrad not come to Robeson County and become a fan of Kelvin Sampson, as well as a friend ofboth his and Karen's families, 1 would likely have been rooting for Kansas, since that's the state where 1 received my bachelor's college degree. Instead, I'm remembering that Kelvin's dad and my husband were in sports together as young men here at Pembroke and that years later "Mr. Ned" was our son, Donny's, football coach in high school. Because of our interest in Kelvin, our family now has the book about his life.) Another question: Does only ONE of the two teams in the final playoff really WIN? It's obvious that MARYLAND is a winner. Does that mean that Coach Mike Davis and the Hoosiers are LOSERS? I don't think so. After the final game Mondaynight, I was glad to hear Greg Gumbel giving credit to Mike Davis and his Hoosiers. and then to ALL 65 teams taking part in the tournament!! As I enjoyed watching the Olympic Games (which, thanks to superb security on every level, turned out to be safe for the thousands of people who had come together at Salt Lake City area for that event), I KEPT thinking the very same thing. Personally, 1 believe there are a lot MORE WINNERS in such games, as well as in academic achievement, and in life as a whole, than simply those w ho are acclaimed by the media because of making it to the very top of their "game." 1 kept coming back to this (over and Over) as favorite, accomplished ice skaters fell, or otherwise failed to come through the way they had done in practice, now that they were in the limelight and being judged (by both officials and the rest of the world). To me EVERYONE who participated was a winner! Also, those athletes who worked hard but missed getting selected for this year's Olympic Games. Also, as I watched the Academy Award winners receiving their Oscars, I couldn't help thinking.about all the others who head been nominated in each category. Just being nominated was a real achievement! And I'm sure there are still others who were NOT nominated but who deserve recognition for their dedication tot he projects they had been working on since last year's Academy Awards. Concern over those who get no recognition is one big reason for having noncompetitive sports and other activities open to the average child, youth, or adult. What I am trying to say in this case in that 1, for one (and I'm sure many others in this area) will always think of our "native son" Coach Kelvin Sampson, and his team, as WINNERS. Kelvin, you have my personal permission to pass this on to all the Sooners! EASTER PROGRAMS I wonder just how many churches in this area held a special Easter program this year. Since I now live only a couple of miles from Old Prospect (one of six churches I worked with when I came tothis community in '56), and since I was so moved by the Christmas program there, it was the program at that church which I attended this year. When I first took my seat, I was distracted, wishing my grandson, Byron, and his family could be there. He was supposed to sing along with other children his age attending the Wednesday after-school program at Prospect UMC. In fact, when I asked him what he did at church last Wednesday, he answered simply by singing the entire song, "He's not finished with me yet!" But by Thursday night when he and his mom got home from practice, it was obvious that he was coming down with chicken pox. He was"not able to take part in this program or the one at his church. Branch Street. wKere he w25"Ib play the disciple, Simon, and his daddy played the role of Jesus. (Because my car is still stalling at times, I did not try to drive to Branch Street. However, before long, with their usual superb singing, the Prospect players got me into the mood for their presentation. By the time three crosses (with their victims) were raised at the front of the church, 1 was concentrating on Jesus' gift of himself for each of us. Costumes and stage setting helped to make the play into a worship experience that will stay in my memory. 1 was especially impressed by the various choirs, the soloists, and the trio who sang after Jesus' resurrection. If you have never attended an Easter presentation like this, in any of the many churches in this area, I encourage you to do so next year. And, let's not forget the Easter message for every day of this coming year: "He is risen!7' We, too, can experience NEW LIFE, beginning now and lasting throughout eternity!
