Reflections by Alta Nye Oxendine coy sola rioy corser I was late learning of the death of Mrs Berna Barton, the mother of Connce Bray boy and Bruce Carton, consccutiv e editors of this paper, their brothers Garry and Rick, who hate also worked w ith tins paper, Roger, of Pembroke, and sisters. Gloria and Renee I know of two children. Ruth and Ernie, who preceded their parents 111 death I first met "Miss Bernic when her mother was a member of my ABE class (composed largely of senior citizens) at First Methodist Church in the spring of 1976 One day when I took "Miss Ada" home, she introduced me to her daughter 11 J.d no idea then t'.iat 1 would be checking in with at least one of "Miss Bernie's" children at the current office of the Carolina Indian Voice on a weekly basis for the next 26 years At Christmastime 1 got into a conversation with a young woman in Lumberton As she started to explain w ho she was. 1 realized I liadjust met one of the Barton sisters who no longer lives in this area (With my unreliable memory for names. I'm not sure now which of the two she is But I do remember that she was a very friendly person!) This past year, as I head toward 75. I've thought of "Miss Ada several times, and how she told us that she would join the A B E class, but that she was "too old to learn" She turned out to be one of the most eager learners of all In my mid-seventies I. too. am still eager to learn all I can cverv dav I oiher families to remember There 's always a new group of griev ltig people to pray for Also, many I'v e never managed to mention in this column For instance. I can't remember whether I ever asked for prayer for the family of Julian Pierce At the singing for Jackie Oxendine. several family members gav e a testimony of liovv God had brought them through their tragedy But I could sense there s still a hurting in their hearts Also, let's remember the family of dexter brooks, the lawyer who became a judge following the death of Julian Pierce 1 met his mother in the Tuesday Club shortly after coming to Pembroke I've learned that people need prayer support for YEARS after their loss Since 1 am one of the recipients of such pray er. 1 want to urge people to also keep all OTHER such families in mind, long after the last tributes hav e been made Also the family of Mitch Tyler, vv horn I never met. but w ho has also left a rich legacy, according to what I've read I'm thankful that the daily newspapers in our area arc now pay ing tribute to non-whites like these two men. and Kelvin Sampson, as well as to whites. Having come to southern N C 45 and a half years ago. I've been able to see a lot of progress Along with constructive criticism. I want to give credit for everything in the picture that is positive! others Guess what! Speaking of being forgetful .I've been adding names to a kind of "obituary list for weeks Now I've misplaced my list!. But I do remember three families I've come to know through the years One is "Miss Melissa" Dccse. w hose daughter. "Miss Ly nettc." I've recently come to appreciate I met her brother. Billy, years ago. Another is Ernestine Hammonds Locklcar. She was one of the PSC students I met my first year here. Years later, her daughter and her husband were the first couple to live in our newly -built apartment (It seems more anatural to simply use first names of those who were students back then) "Miss Zettie" Sampson's family were also among the people I met soon after coming to Pembroke T'tat first year I got acquainted with three of the children, all college students The memorial window for "Mr. James Albert" is next to the one for our family members in the old "League Room" fellowship hall at First United Methodist Church. Pentbroke. As we pray for the families mentioned here, let 's not forget ALL THE OTHERS in this area (and SO MANY at this time all around the world) who are mourning the loss of loved ones I know from experience that our loving God can bring comfort and healing, making it possible to go on living without the others! But it doesn't happen overnight. And it helps SO much to have friends who are praying, and who show (in one way or another) that they really care!
