Miss Revels, a 2001 UNCP graduate, is from St. Pauls and teaches at Lumberton High School. She was Miss UNCP 1998 and is the former Junior Miss Lumbee. Miss Lumbce. Miss St. Pauls and currently Miss Fayetteville. She is the second Lumbee to win the state title and the second in the past three years. She is the third UNCP graduate to win the Miss North Carolina title. Francic Adlcr '83 and Lorna McNeil '02 accomplished the feat before here. "1 am both extremely proud and happy for Rebekah," said Chancellor Allen C. Meadors. "She embodies the characteristics we cherish in our graduates- commitment, intelligence, poise, dedication and ambition. She will be a tremendous representative for Fayetteville, UNCP, the Lumbee Tribe, and the State of North Carolina." Miss Revels will hold the title for one year and represent North Carolina in the Miss America Pageant in September in Atlantic City, NJ. She wins a $ 12,000 scholarship "This is overwhelming and probably the most emotional experience I have ever had," she told reporters following the contest Miss Revels is classically trained in voice. She performs opera, dances and plays the saxophone. Her community service project is Alzheimer's disease awareness Miss Revels won preliminary competitions for swimsuit and talent, said Dr. Diane Jones, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. Dr Jones attended every night of the competition. "Rebekah had the grace, beauty and stage presence that spelled winner," Dr. Jones said "She was radiant, enthusiastic and a crowd pleaser from the very first night of competition." "She worked hard which was evident in her swimsuil competition, interview and talent." she said "She was an undisputed 10 in swimsuit! Rebekah will do well at Miss America and she will have a lot of supporters from Robeson County As a graduate of UNCP. we arc very proud of Rebekah and her achievement as Miss North Carolina' " It was the 65th Miss North Carolina pageant, and Miss Revels bested 33 other contestants including the current Miss UNCP tilleholdcr Kathcrine Greer, a rising sophomore from Fuqua Vanina. Evita had a perfect attendance in her dance class this year which ended with her recital on May 11, 2002. Her dance instructor is Karen Gibson-Jenkins. Evita has also won 2 more titles. Her first win wu on May 26, 2002 as the USA Eastern Miss 0-4 Overall Grand Majestic. She also won Photgenic, sportswear, Sleepwear, Overall Sleepwear, and Overall Hostess. Evita's second win was on June 1, 2002 as the N. C. Hawaiian Tropic Little Miss State. She also won Photogenic, Poster, Portfolio, Best Smile, and Tropical Wear. Evita is the 4 year old daughter of Sahrina Sanderson A Micheal Floyd. The granddaughter of Sylvia /,. Sanderson A the late James Edward A Mary Frances Floyd. The great granddaughter of the late Gus Howard A Eva Mae Locklear A the late Ira A Nancy Sander'm. 7{i State of the Tribe Address July 3 Tribal Chairman Millon R. Hunt will deliver the first annual State of the Tribe Address on July 3 at 7:00 p.m the address will be given at the Tribal Office located at 707 Union Chapel Road in Pembroke. All members of the Lumbess Tribe arc encouraged to attend for this historic event. The Lumbee Constitution requires the State of the Tribe Address be given the first week in July with a proposed budget for the upcoming year. Following the address will also be a tribal community meeting to discuss the proposed Lumbee Bill for federal recognition. This meeting will be hosted by the Tribal Attorney Arlinda Locklcar of Washington,D.C. Finn Promoted to Sergeant Major E-9 Jerry R. Finn daughter of the late Osie B. Finin and Ethel Finin of I.umberton, also the granddaughter of the late Jessie & Cattie Mae Cummings was promoted to Sergeant Major E-9 on 22nd of May 2002. She is currently stationed at Ft. Drum N. V. enroute to Korea, at Camp Humphries, . 23rd Area Support Group. Sergeant Major Finin has served in the U.S. Army since August 28th ,1981. Lumbee Sports Camp July 3 The Lumbcc Tribal Council and the N,C, Indian Cultural Center will sponsor a sports camp on July 3 at the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. The cost is S2 and includes pool. charge. Other activities will include lacrosse, basketball and softball. "Family Day" w ill be July 4 at the NC Indian Cultural Center with activities starting at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. A charge of S3 will coverall activities and include pool charges. June 29th "It is with honor and deep emotion that 1 write my final article as 1 come to the close of my reign as your Teen Miss Lumbee It is by the will of God that I have had the opportunity to be your "Little Miss Lumbee 2001 -2002 Each year has been filled w ith many wunderfill experiences and memories, and each year has allowed me to be your ambassador, sharing and educating others about Lumbee history an culture. Winning the title of "Teen Miss Lumbee" means more than just winning a crown; with it comes the responsibility of serving as a positive role model for all Lumbee youth and the opportunity to represent all Lumbee people. Tribal District 2 Comunity Meeting Tribal District 2. Back Swamp. Britts and Smyrna communities, will have a meeting on Friday, June 28 at 7 .30 p.m The community meeting will be at Riverside Independent Baptist Church on Hwy.74. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss tribal issues that affect District 2 and to receive feedback upon action taken by the Tribal Council. Director of Missions to Speak at Sandy Plains Sunday The Rev. Mike Cummings will be the guest preacher for the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church "Youth Sunday" worship service scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday. June 30. Rev. Cummings is the Director of Missions for the Burnt Swamp Baptist Association and a past president of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention He is also a former pastor of Mt.
