though Byron is not a name we hear e\er\ day. there was one other!

community Mr Ruppcl (lusdad) was the principal of our local school I
The Ruppcl family and our Nye family were among a half do/en fajm-1
lies who attended our local one-room church each Sunday
I've seen Byron only once since his attractive red-brown hair turned!
towlutc But 1 remember turn as a little boy the Sunday morning when I

and sang the song Trust and Obey " !
Even now (60 years later) whenever 1 sing that hymn. I seethosetwol

it in his radio series about obeying God Another quote from Dr I
Stanley "Partial obedience is disobedience " Most of us. without I
even thinking about it. do have a tendency to pick and choose what I
we want to obey and what we want to blot out of our thinking'
In other words, wc want to plan out the way wc will live our own lives I
If you arc a child, a youth, or an adult, you surely should noj let I

your ability to think things through for yourself
But. with our Creator it is different Our God can always sec the TO-1
TAi. PICTURE, what is best for you and me. and where He needs to I
use you every day of your life in this world He gives you the freedom !
to think for yourself in many ways every day He also gives you the
freedom to accept or re)cct His plans for vou each dav

1 believe wc should think for ourselves when it comes to the people
around us. though it SOMETIMES helps to listen to thciradv icc But.
after they give us that advice wc need to think it through, and PRAY
ABOUT IT. and ONLY THEN decide w liat to accept and w Iiat to reject
On the other luind. when it comes to GOD'S advice, sooner or later wc
will realize that HE will never steer us wrong! No human being, neither
you nor I. nor a friend or family member, can offer the BEST ADVICE of
the universe. But God can' He wants to! And He will, if wc will STOP
(right where wc are) long enough to give Him that chance Wc can
alway s put our trust in HIM. without any fear of going wrong!
At some point in our past or present, a lot of us have put our trust in
somonc else w hen wc were not sure what to do Our friends, family
members, or strangers may hav c the VERY BEST of intentions for our
welfare, but they can lead us SO FAR ASTRAY that our life may be
upset for years! !
Even though I have chosen to become a Christian. I may discover
that the persons 1 trusted to guide me (knowingly or unknowingly)
have caused me to drift so far that I feel it 's impossible to come back !!
But. praise God! That's not true Wc can always comeback!
But. wc must MAKE ourselves turn back again to our Creator in repentance.

other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."
On another radio program. "Love Worth Finding." Pastor Adrian
Rogers reminded us listeners that the only way we can have VICTORY
in our daily lives is by "practicing the Word of God" each day!
I would add that wc also need to "practice the presence of God
Himself during the day. by beginning each dav with the attitude (and
the act) of pray er for His guidance

The Uumbec Tribal Council has established a Vision Quest Award
to assist enrolled Lumbcc members with vocational and skills train- ,
ing Applications are available at the Tribal Office at 707 Union Chapel
Road in Pembroke or on-line at lumbcctribe com.
The purpose of the award is to assist tribal members who have lost
jobs as a result of plant closings to acquire new job skills that will lead
to re-entry into labor force Vision Quest will provide assistance for
tuition, mandatory fees and books.
Applicants must be (1) an enrolled member of the Lumbec Tribe. (2)
reside in Hoke. Robeson, or Scotland Counties. (3) be admitted to a
program of study at a vocational or post-secondary educational institution
and (4) low-income
Interested tribal members should contact the tribal Office at 5217861

informauon. Funds arc limited and applications will be available until
November 29. 2002
Scholarships will be awarded January 1. 2003 for the 2003 spring
semester
Funding for this program is made available through the Community

of Health & Human Services
