Just riding down the road of life in my little old turnip truck. 1 hope all of you have had a good week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to David Carter who is hospitalized. He is a member of the Strike at the Wind family. David also serves as the Speaker for the Lumbee Tribal Council. He has been blessed for many years with his loving wife Sue and ahouseful of talented children (especially Davita). We hope to see David out of the hospital very soon and back on his fee Memories of Special People This past week, two very special ladies went to walk with out Creator. They were pillars in there communities and would lend a hand to anyone in need. Mrs. Lillie Mae Brewington and Mrs. Mable Chavis. I have seen alot of the people whom they have assisted over the years and they will be missed by many. "Miss Lillie Mae" years ago would help new mothers who didn't know how to care for a newborn, j ust what to do. I know she made an impact on many lives in this county. "Miss Mable". well weknew heras "the Stanley lady." She could sell you a bottle of that Degreaser before you could turn around good. She is the mother of three exceptional children. Larry Chavis who isn't only a truck driving teacher, he is also a Magistrate. Rosie who has spent many yean doing social work in this county and Kenny Ray (I wish I could tell you what he does but, I haven't seen or heard from him in several years.) I can tell you that the best cornbread that I ever ate was ai the home of Miss Mable..J ? "~> * A Niw Rook Available I would like t?> commend Ms. Mary B. Hunt for taking the time to write a book about Miss Anna Mae Locklear. Knowing her as a teacher and a leader of many for many years, you can tell she did the majority of the work and the writing. Both her and Rev. Tony Brewington had a love and admiration for Miss Anna Mae. My father worked for many years with hei brother who was known as "Bo-wevel" in construction. I had never weni to suminer camp until I met Miss Anna Mae. She encouraged me to attend the camp at Fort Fisher and Camp Mundo Vista in Asheboro, NC. Aftei being a camper there for several summers, I worked as a Counselor ir -Trainin ft-who was known asaC-I-TatCamp Mundo Vista. To say that M is: Anna Mae touched more people than the stars which are in the heavens well, that is just about accurate. If you knew Miss Anna Mae, I encourage you to get this book. Then you can sit back and say "I remember that." The 64 Million Dollar Question I w ent by the office of Lbc Lumbee Tribal Govenunent and picked up the booklet "Achieving the American Dream ." This book contains the 2004 Annual Report When I looked mto the Housing Report 1 was "shocked" to see that the funds are delegated by districts. Now. I have worked for several housing authorities and 1 don't know of anyone who helps people according to then district. In the Budget Report for 2002-2001 it clearly states that the NAHASDA housing funds are S8,071.247,00 on page. 23. Now, on page 30 they account for only S4.812,660.00 of the aforementioned monies. This according to their own published record leaves S3.258,587.00 unaccounted for m this housmg and budget report. The budget clearly states that they received S 100,00.00 from AN A for Administrative cost (in other words "for just running the office".) Now, in the 2003-2004 Budget Report they receive S88.000.00 from ANA and SI 0,344,001.00 from the NAHASDA for housing. Now, according to this report which is located on page 31 they spent a total of S6.265.730.00. This leaves $4,078,27 LOO unaccount for and not listed in the report. I encourage everyone to go and get them a copy of this book and count it up for themselves. In their two fiscal reports there is a total of S7,336,858.00 which is stated in the budget and is not in the "Breakdown of bousing program funds per Tribal Districts." Frankly dear, 1 would have never printed this report. Especially slating what I had received and what I had spent. If they are paying that 7 million plus in salaries "we need anew tribal office." And I say that because only about S500.000.00 is suppose to go for Administrative cost of the housing program, not 7 million. The housing funds should not be supporting the Lumbee Tribal Government Office Staff. That is WRONG and we all know it! Do we have too many leaders and not enough lndians?Do they think that we are the ones that fell off the darn trunip truck or are on the 3rd rock from the sun? There has been 64 million dollars recorded which has came into the Lumbee tribe since the housing program began. If you divide it by the 52,000 member it comes to S1,230.76 per tribal member. Like the little old lady in the Burger King commercial I am asking "where's the beef?" Don't take my word for it, get the book and add it up for yourself! Anc by the way remember "if you don't stand up for yourself, no one else will!' Thanks for riding on the turnip truck with me! Reader appalled by County Courts' failure to perform DNA testing I am appalled by the denial of the Robeson County Superior Courts failure to perform DNA testing on evidence that could prove an individuals innocence By an Act of Congress the, "Innocence Protection Act," (HB884 of July 2001 http://www ncleg net/htm2001/bills/ currentversion/ratified/house/hbi 10884 full htm) was passed and signed into law Almost a year before this law was passed the Federal Government passed the same bill barring ant state from denying DNA testing to individuals convicted in state courts, see: (Innocence Protection Actof2000, http://thomasloc.gov/oqi-bin/bdquery/D7d 106:1:./ temp/bdNT9w:^@@L&sunim2=m&l/bss ...). Yet Robeson County's own Senior ResTdent Judge Robert Floyd and the District Attorneys Office (Johnson Britt) have denied this individual the opportunity to prove their innocence. Judge Floyd Confesses that the individual has been heard by Judge and Jury. Where did Judge Floyd get this information? Did he not read what the New Law, N.C.G.S. 15A-269 says? Copy enclose (The court shall grant the motion for DNA testing of the evidence upon its determination that:) there are procedures for correcting the wrong done by others. Whatever happened to the search for the truth? Or has the courts budget taken priority? Judge Floyd, at what point will you realize that justice makes mistakes? Who has the power to do what is right? How can anyone put a value on the years in innocent person serves for a crime he/she did not commit'when the answer is ready available through DNA testing? How many will be convicted, and their name tarnished because someone is denying them the answer through a simple test that can and will answer all questions? (Sec. 104) Prohibits a State from denying a request, made by a person in custody resulting from a State coiirtjudgment, for DNA testing of biological materials that is rearlated to the investigation or prosecution that resulted in the conviction of the person or the sentence imposed on the person bars a state from relying upon a time limit or procedural default rule to deny a person an opportunity to present noncumulative, exculpatory DNA results in court, or in an executive or administrative forum in which a decision is made in accordance with procedural due process.http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/ D?d 106:1: ,/tenqy-bdNT9w:@@@L&summ2=m& 1/bss... 15 A-269 Request for postconviction DNA testing.
