Many have been the problems of the

great and growing denomination, re
markably well balanced and with a
viilon like unto the vision of the men

state and a Christianised world.
From small beglnnlnge the Baptists
have grown Into a host of 100,000

local church purposes each year mo,
than 1,000,000 dollars a year. '
In less than a century the Baptists
of this state have grown from a mere
handful to a denomination whose total
monetary gifta because of their faith
and love now reach 1,000,000 dollars
a year a per capita of flO and thli

tlonal Institutions schools and col

valued at 11.783,401. They employ 126
teachera and last year enrolled 2,(62
pupils. Within the borders of the state
are, In addition, eight additional edu
cational Institutions which are more
directly under the control of the home
mission board of the Southern Baptist
convention and yet they ocoupy almost
the same position as the other Insti
tutions. These have property worth
1476.120 and employed last year 64
teachers and enrolled 1,769 pupils. The
grand total of Baptist educational
property In North Carolina la 11,260,

When Tueeday, November IB eomes
and the representatives of the 1,212
churches of North Carolina gather In
annual session at Rocky Mount and
listen to the reports of the year clos
ing November 1, and plan for the de
nominational work of another year,
there will be reason for the singing of
the doxology. Despite the business de
pression. It has been a good year. Hard
times came and hit the constituency
of the Baptist denominational as hard
as It seemed they could be. hit, but
Secretary of Missions Maddry says that
over 1200,000 haa been contributed for
missions thla year. This I short of the
amount wantea out it is gooa.
But It la not alone in missionary
and educational activity that the Bap

things to pass. Thomasvllle orphanage,

The list seeslon of the North Caro
lina Baptist oonventlon will be held
at Rocky Mount, November 16, II, 17,
Rev. J. C. Davis, D. D.. of Albemarle,
will preaoh the convention aermon. For
the first time In 20 yeara this sermon
will be delivered by a minister who haa
been ao honored at a previous time.
Mr. Davis preached the convention ser
mon In 1912. It was a great message.
This year, by reaeon of tha removal
from tha atate of Rev. W. F. Powell,
u. u formerly of Aahevlll. Dr. Davla
again become the oonventlon preaoh.
er. xnere ta no man in tha atata whoaa
preaching would be more acceptable.
He Is one of the denomination's deep
est thinkers and a man of remarkable
power. (.
It Is not likely that the oonventlon
will lose much time In the organisa
tion. President B. W. Splllman will luo
ceed himself unless the unexpected
happens. Secretary Walter M. Ollmore
Is so valuable that the oonventlon
could not afford to replace him. Treas
urer Waltera Durham Is one of the
lependable men. Corresponding Secre
tary of Missions Charles Maddry was
ailed back home laat year from Texas
to take his place and the convention
could not do better.
To be very frank and clear, there Is
never any telling what tha conven
tion will do becaue It la an Indepen
dent body and any messenger has the
legal and tha moral right to make a
nomination or offer a motion, but even
with Its independence the Baptist atate
convention haa grown until It recog
nizee, that Is the Individuals who com
pose the convention recognise, tha
importance of moving cautiously be
cause of the tremendous Issues that
are before the denomination. Issues of
life to a world. When men have been
found who are serving well, the con
vention passes on to the plana of work
for the future.
Thl year the eonventlon will learn,
through the commission appointed
laet year, of the progress of plana for
the first Baptist hospital to be built
in North Carolina. WInaton-Salem Is
the location which has been chosen and
the plans ar being perfected. The
convention will also dlacusa a propos
ed "part-time achool of applied stew
ardship." A committee of which Rev.
W. N. Johnson, D. D., of Badln, Is
-hairman wH make a report. It la
likely that the convention will take
some definite ateps looking toward the
preservation of North Carolina Bap
tist history. This Is Important and haa
received some consideration lnformal
'y. The oonventlon promises to be of
Interest but there will be no apeotaou
lar feature It la the annual meeting
of a denomination whose work Is that
of fulfilling thcgreat commission.

QJbS- there is
Somettiing New in Closed Cars
Nothing radically new but advancements
that are logical and just a year or two ahead
of the times.
That summarizes our new offerings of Mar
mon Sedans, Coupes, Suburbans and other
closed types.
Their appearance of lowness and lightness
is a pleasant contrast to the top-heavy,
clumsy, heavy models whicfThave been
prevalent.
Their improved vision is appealing. As one
- sits at the driver's scat one is inclined to
wonder why obstructing columns remained
in vogue so long. In the new Marmona
there is added driving comfort and safety.
Throughout there are advancements that
give these new-type Marmons first place
among high grade cars. There are improve
ments which make one realize that these
Marmons set the pace and are therefore
the choicest offerings of the season. ,
