C. Cheek Mrs. Maud K'owell Sheets 111 American Bank Building, Phone 3120 iinswer to last year's appeal and she expects more this year. Last year more than 11,300 was donated for the Christmas bankets for the poor. H is the part of a very comprehen sive rianta. t.'laus that the hoard of welfare plays lo those who find (,'hrlsrmas bleak and bare except for th hoard and Ilia people whose dona tions make Its work possible at the Christmas season, Whu board, will re member those In Greensboro and the vicinity. . The board does not give Christmas dinners, that helim the province of Ihe Hulvatlnn army, U does give groceries, fruit, clothing-, cloth, coal and wood and some toys for the chll-l drcn. It plans Its work ulore ulltarlan lines, seeking to alleviate Mistress and furnish a hit of Chr'stm. ( Cheer at the same time. What la Christmas wllhotrt fit. ' was one question that Mrs. tfterne asked yesterday. Hull, there will lie people without even a handful of coals to shiver over, while othtvs pay homage to the King In pleasant, steam heated houses, unless the warm take time. Just a few minutes, to re member their unfortunate brothers and sisters, time to remember little underclud, shivering children. Mra. Hicrno is slrong for warmth on the Christmas day. There aro fow things more accept able to a girl than fresh, new ging ham cloth nor to the woman than warm outing where the girl or the woman has nothing like that, Mra. Sterne said. There la really no glfl more acceptable than , a new pair of shoes In time of. eleet and Blush where the old footwear has wprn past all serviceability. Mrs. Storne and the board believe in clothing the needy. And those things are not so costly. They are easily purchasable, provided one who has a warm overcoat and fura and all that will Just take a few min utea and do a little hard thinking and a little quick action. There are old women, who have Been many Christmas come and go, Mra. Sterne said, some of them happy ones when they did not give the warmth giving qualities of the clothes thoy wore a thought. It wasn't necessary. Hut now Christmas is not ao happy for them and a bit of clothing, a piece of outing, a simple, cheap dress makes Christmas really Christmas to them. Of course tho board and Mrs. Sterne know that nobody can really be hap py If they are hungry. For that rea son they see that tho needy have some thing that will last for several days bread, for example, canned goods, meat, plain food that appeals to peo ple who really never have enough ot It. For that reason groceries of ail klnda are very acceptable. Besides that, the children are given fruit and the little knicknacks that go with Christ mas. ' Toya. provided they are not disrep utable, are welcomed. Something that depends upon a spring to run and that had Its spring snapped about 10 months ago should not be Bent. Even the poor little children know the dif ference. But there are many toys that children have outgrown that are In fairly good ahape. They can be used. The board, of course wants money. Mrs. Sterne has not set any figure. "All we can get," she said. Aa has been stated before, the hoard got over II, S00 last year for the poor at Christ mas. It should receive more this year. Times are not aa flush as they were lust year and more people are In need. There la more distress to be alleviat ed; more homes to'goo; more stom acha to try to fill tor once. Alao, It Is aupposert that when people are not ao prosperous themselves they are quick er to recognise the needs of others. In addition to money, Mra. Hterne would like to get all the groceries that anybody feels like giving, things like flour and meat and canned goods everything that people eat. Bealdes that, clothing, clean and In fairly good condition, Is very acceptable, things like overcouta that have been out grown and thrown aside or any piece of clothing. It can all be used. ' Mrs. Hterne makes It clenr that It Is the people of Greensboro who will have to furnish these things. She and the board ot welfare are only the agents of the people here. Without a generous response to her appeal ahe cannot do anything. And she has faith In them. It Is rather extraordinary, that faith. Talking to her one. does not catch a single note of worry or irritation lest there be suffering be cause of a lack of generosity. ' It may be that donatluns.come In slow ly, but "They will not forget. They will "remember' She has an Immense amount of confidence In the else of the heart of Greensboro. It would not do to abuse that confidence. It would not be fair to those who would be thank ful for Just "the crumbs from the table" of the fortunate, from those to whom Christmas means something, whose children do not have to trust to the generosity of others. Checks should be made payable to Mrs Blanche Carr Sterne, Board of Welfare, or Just to the board, and should be mailed to Mrs. Blanche Carr Sterne. Board of Welfare. Courthouae, C.reenshoro. They may be carried to her office, also cash. Other gifts of a heavier nature may be carried to her office, on the third floor of the courthouse, or if ahe Is notified the board will send for them. Christmas eve is only It days dls tant and those whose hearts are not granite should waste no time.
