s GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1922 11 Forward Movement Continues In All Stock Market Trades Recent Liquidation Have Placed Market In An Excellent Trad . ing Position With a, Majority of the Issues Show- r ing a Decided Upward Tendency. v on th Rock Island lor th entire l rtun aad Bean Stock Letter. month of October totalled 141.14 (Special to Dtiii mm.) oars u compared with -138. 12 cnrsi new york, Nov. 1. organised ouy during September. However. Octo- Ing of representative stocks wu the (Br lint Win te Ballf Nin.) (Uiprrilht, 131, br rhllulllptiU Klblte Ltdier.) New Tork, .Nov. I. Today"! stock market witnessed a continuation of the forward movement which began In uch promising fashion yester day. Trading appears to have set tled down to a fairly uniform pace ot approximately a million shares daily, with a wide range of issues the sub jects of transactions. Although there was evident today at various times and In various portions of the market the usual speculative disposi tion to look for the "aocondary re-I action," a development, frequently noted after sharp recoveries, from, severe depressions, those who oper ated on this theory, made little head way. Gains were generously scat' tered throughout the list, while num erous ' Issues were up from one to four ifolnts. of the federal reserve system, the ratio stands at 71 per sent compared with 77. 6 per cent laat week. The decline Is due chiefly to an Increase In discount, which may be -Interpreted as evidence of the expansion in business ana industry. The recent liquidation has Placeo4pn.Nmlb', ' the market In a strong trading nosl- ,' tlen. Many oneratdrs find their lines greatly reduced, with the mar. 'ket- showing a decided upward ten I dency. Undoubtedly there Is a fair ly large short interest outstanding, thus laying the basis for good buy ing power on setbacks. Today's mar ket showed a well defined rising, trend with unimportant reactions. Gains were well distributed among .the rails and industrials, although railroad stocks in the early trading showed the firmer undertone. Spe cialties In several Instances were quite buoyant, although the gains were not fully maintained. Mer chandising stocks presented the firm est appearance of the miscellaneous . Issues, with sharp rises. In Assoc! ated Drygoods, May Department Stores and Montgomery Ward. Stude baker ran up sharply on the an nouncement of price advances, and A Oeneral Motors was stimulated by J reports of large sales by several of ' Its subsidiary companies. One of the interesting Internal de velopments of the day was the rise to new high levels for cotton with ; the December position crossing 25 cents and maintaining its gain. The American cotton trade is alrsady familiar with the crop shortage in this country, as well as the splendid demand for textile -inducts. For eign consumers,' however, will be rather disturbed to learn that 11ra7.ll which was counted, upon to supply some 100.00(1 bales for export, will not liave enough to meet Its own needs, and will be compelled to be a buyer In this country. According to the weekly statement MONITOR'S WALL STREET 6OS8IP. (Sf UaeM Win U KalUr iwmw (Coprrllbt, 1921, br rMladilgola Mbus tsdsW.I New York. Nov. I. May Depart' ment stores rallied again today and despite the circulation of reports tnat any action looxing lowtroi an Increase In the cash dividend on the common or an extra stock dividend would necesarlly be postponed until after the holiday profits were In, the stock continued very firm. The dl rectors' meetings, scheduled In St. Louis yesterday, was postponed for lack' of a quorum and will be held According to an announcement made bv Olds Motor company.1 nro duotlon during October broke all monthly records ot the company. with the exception of one single month at the peak In 1919. Other phases of the automobile Industry are favorable, and 8t!udebakei has just announced a new scale of prices rrom J50 to ilia nigner than the prevailing schedules. . Standard Oil of New Tork has de clared the regular quarterly dividend of 14 per share on the old 1100 par stock. Stockholders have ratified re duction ot the par value ot this stock to 125, and the stock dividend of 200 per cent, payable, In this new stock will be made on slock of record as of December 1. . Some of the recent appreciation In the market price ot Dome Mines Is explained by the production report of this company for the half year ended October 11. During this period the total value or output was 22.170, 651. as compared with but S1.8S2.29S In the same six. months last year. National Lead has again advanced prices, of all lead products 60 cents per 100 pounds. At the present time this company Is doing .the largest white lead business In Its history and with other chases of the lead and paint business Improved In pro portion, It Is hardly necessary to look for an extra disbursement from the United States Cartridge profits to explain current strength In the mantel pries oi me stock. During the first 21 days of Octo ber car loadings on the St. Paul totalled 161.192 cars as compared with 1J3.965 during ' the -am. period a year ago. The showing made by this oompany, as well as Woolworth, May Department stores, the mail order houses - and others of like charaoter form a satisfactory Indica tion of the widespread Improvement In Industrial conditions throughout the country. The Woolworth com pany is still receiving Oermangoods in large volume, nut it is understood that shipments now coming In rep resent specifications against orders placed sometime ago. Since these orders were placed the tariff has been Increased heavily, but even the continued decline In German marks, which today again estab lished a new low record for all time. will show the Woolworth company very satisfactory pronts. The current figures Issued by the railway associations showing the tremendous shortage ot freight cars is being reflected in good buying of the equipments. General American Tank Car was up more than 1 points from yesterday's, low, and when It is considered that this company Is the fourth largest manufacturer of treigm. cars in ui wimnj, o-uuai the same time reigns supreme in the firoductlon of tank cars, this support s -easily understood. Orders on the books at present call for about 10.000 freight 'cars, this business is worth a total of some $20,000,000. At the present time the company Is earning at the rate of 113 per share per year, haa ample working oapital and no bank loans. It Is reported that the sultan has been deposed by the political crowd at Angora, of which Kemal la the head., If this has not actually happened, we may be sure that he is slipping and Is liable to tear his baggy trousers in the pro cess ot getting down to the level. This ruler has long been In the world's garret as a thing not alto gether discarded but on the way to complete desuetude. Children often set up a grotesque figure In that part of the home In order to get the lu ury of fright, but they are Just as much Interested In kicking the old dummy over as In setting him up originally The world "Is moving on through space as usual and occasionally has had a little shiver down the back as It glanced at such an object as the sultan but now bears a smile on its Hds as it stances in that direction, and sees the clothes of the monarch fresh and bright in appearance but essentially having the dust of ages on them.
