14 GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1921 ELECTION HAS UTTLE EFFECT ON STOCK LIST With Exception of Few Issues Nearly All Stocks Continue ; , Upward Trend. PUBLIC UTILITIES ACTIVE Nw York, Nov. I. Except In few anaelal luuM. whtcn heel a direct In tereat at stake, prices In today's stock market continued to move to Wither ground witn lime arparent regard of the results of the election. Experimental short selling; Imparted a reactionary tone to opening prices, but speculators for the advance soon obtained contrcl of the market and rallied the list after staging; a series of bullish demonstrations in a few in dividual shares. Chief Interest centered on a sharp ISO point rise In cotton prices and the - further depreciation of French. Bel- f;ian and German exchanges to new ow levels for the year. The jump In . cotton, which was equivalent to 55 a kale, followed publication of the gov- arnment's ginning report showing 8,- lSi.il bales ginned to November 1. . The sharp break In the allied con tinental exchanges was attributed to the Increasingly serious financial and economic outlook of those countries as a result of the failure of the Ber lin reparations conference to effect a satisfactory method of payment. French francs dropped nearly half a cent to (.10 cents each as compared with 1.03 a week ago. and Berlin francs dropped even more, to 6.59 centa each aa against 6.56 last week. German marks continued their course toward the vanishing point, being quoted at 1 3-16 cents a hundred. Sterling, however, was strong, rising to 44.44. a ' gain , of IH cents over Monday night The election's greatest surprise to Wall street was the extent of the Democratic victory. While this was interpreted as due. in part, to dissat isfaction with the tariff, stocks of companies mostly benefited by this exchange failed to be appreciably in ftuenced. . Public utility Issues were amour the most active, buying being based on the theory that, with the election out of the - way. several companies can Bow go ahead with their recapit ulation plana Consolidated Gas and Columbia Gas, each of which has been purposely withholding plans un . Mil after election, advanced 2 and 14. respectively. The Columbia Gas plan 4a aaid to Involve the declara tlon of a 64 per cent stock dividend In seven per cent preferred stock and the Consolidated plan Is reported to Include the distribution of some of Its New York Edison holdings. Mar ket Street Railway shares were strong on the strength of early re turns from California Indicating adoption of an amendment to the stats constitution permitting the acquisition of the lines, by the city : ' of San Francisco, "Copper shares continued to give a good account of themselves, holding up well In the face of early selling pressure. Gains of one to three points were reported by Chile. Chlno and Arisona and Anaconda, Utah and Butte and Superior improved fractionally, while Kennecott yielded lightly. Steel shares became quiet and ac tive towards the close in response to - a brisk rally in United Slates Steel . on Sinn on. which carried it three Solnt above Monday's closing level, lightly smaller gains were recorded " by Crucible. Bethlehem B. Republic . and. Midvale. while Gulf States rrtmbed JV Baldwin and Studebaker. 'In wbjch a large short Interest is sup :t posed to exist, also made good gains in the final hour. Some of the specialties which got ftito new high ground were Wool- worth. May Department stores, and . Fisher Body, Railroad shares showed mixed changes, mainly unimportant. . but Jersey Central closed at a net gain of 121 points. There were,, a few weak spots, notably General Asphalt, which was offered freely be . cause of Its reported unsatisfactory earnings outlook, dropping more than four points, . Total sales were 160.20 shares. Call money opened at five per cent but advanced to 6i and then to 4. where It closed. Stiffening of the rate was attributed to withdrawals by interior banks, who are finding a profitable use for the funds by fi nancing operations in connection with the holding bsck of crops by wheat and cotton growers for higher prices. Plenty of lime funds wen; , available at five per cent for the ahorter maturities. The bulk of com mercial papers was disposed of at the 44 Per cent rate. NEW YORK STOCKS Sew York. Wheat averaged lower in price today chiefly as a re suit of a decline at Llvtirpool and ne- oauae of reports that grain purchases , made for Italy and fiermaay had been cancelled. The wheat market closed armettled one net lower to one eighth advance, with December 1.1 & V ts 1.16U and Mav 1.1.1 to 1.164. Corn gained Ihree-eiahths and one-half to three-quarters and seven-eighths; osts finished unchanged to one-quar- . tar cent nigner and provision at rise of seven to 12 cents. Hears in the wheat market had an advantage early owing to weakness of Liverpool quotations, but this ad vantage was partly offset later by . strength in the New York cotton market and In securities. Then a bulge In the price of oorn here had temporary stimulating effect on wheat values. Th gain In wheat, however wnre mnr than wln,4 a,,I during the final hour when gossip v became current that Italy had can celled 600,000 bushels of wheat bought and that Qermany had can celled corn. With franca and mark at tha low est figures on record, wheat dis played but little power to rally at tha last. Nevertheless a fair amount of sxport buslnsss waa announcsd as having been put through at tha ssa board, and export sale war also noted as having been mad at Oman and here. A decrease of nearly six million bushel In th world' avail able supply waa praotloally Ignored. Strength In tile corn martlet and In oat was due largely to expectance of a bullish government crop report aa to corn. New high price records for the season were touched. A a matter ot fact, however, government figures on the yield ot corn were nearly 100.000,000 bushels In excees of i private estimates. .-41 Provisions - were dull but finally climbed a little In line with hog and uvancs in iara ai Liverpool, Onen.
