If the election carries and the bonda are authorised, the state will five an additional $25,000 toward the erection of the new school, making a total of $70, 000. County Superintendent E. M. Rollins said today that the new school would combine about six schools In Klttrell township at the present time, and will have an en rollment of approximately S00 chil dren. v The new county officials for Vance were sworn In Monday to nerve dur ing the term of two years beginning with the first Monday In December. Klttrell was re elected county attorney. 1 New directors f the Golden Belt Fair association to serve during the coming year were chosen by the stockholders at their annual meeting held yeaterday .at tha chamber of commerce. Reports were submitted by the retiring officers showing the 19! fair a complete succesa and plans for expansion of the undertak ing next year were discussed. MANY MILLIONS ARE GIVEN PENSIONERS American Pension System Last Year Cost Public $255, 2QI.662, Says Report. Washington. Dec. 7. The Ameri can pension system cost the public $:S6,J01.S during 'the fiscal year ended last June JO. according to the annual report of the commissioner of pensions sent today to President Harding. Of this amount JI5I.807, 58 J waa paid out for pensions, the cost of maintenance of the system be ing $1,4.07. That the . number of pensions In this country Is rapidly diminishing la shown In the statement that M.908. lit leas was "paid In pensions during the past fiscal year than during the previous year: that 20.013 Civil war veterans died, aa against 34.775 for the previous year, and that 81.Z59 widows died as against 19.451 the year previous. The number of pensioners on the rolls June 10, 1S22, was 547,016 com pared with S6M51 on June JO the previous year. Of these, 193.881 were Civil war veterans: 171.194 Civil war widows; 4S.955 veterans of the Hpan- lah war: and $.198 widows of Span ish war veterans. One de cision held that a person who enlist ed In the regular army subsequent to April !, 1898, and waa discharged on or before April 11. 1899. or who en listed in the navy or a marine corps after May 4, 1898, and was diecharg- ed prior to April 11. 1899. could be considered a "volunteer." This hold ing favorably affected hundreda of claims filed by widows and minors of soldiers of the Spanish war. Instructions approved1 in August, last year, provided a more liberal -ystem of rating claims of Spanish war soldiers under the act of June, 1920. Moore, clerk, Mr, Moore, who also beglna a new term, took the oath before the chairman of the county commissioners. F. H. Coffey. Mr. Coffey was elected chair man of the board at the beginning of the board s aeaslon Monday morning. All of the new officers filed bond, and thee were approved and ao cepted. The order of the former board made at a special meeting in November, creating three - new townships of Oamewell. Buffalo' Cove, and Rich lands, waa revoked. This action on j the part of the new board was be- cause of the fact that the three townships had not been created In a legal way. One other Important matter that came up was the dismissal of J. M. Tuttle as connty Velfare officer. The county welfare officer Is appointed by the Joint boards of county com missioners and the board of educa tion. Tha board of education passed an order asking tha ehatrman of the board of county eommlasloners to re quest Mr. Tuttle to resign. Mr. Tuttle refused to file his resignation and the board than adopted the reso lution of dismissing him. The propo sition of appointing some one else to fill Mr. TuttlS's plaoe has not been taken up. It te understood that Mr. Tuttle la not going to accept the dis missal, and It may be that the case will be carried Into the courts before It Is decided.
