A my home is immuliately mi the frouud, and but two miles tiom the 1'i int, I had from a rising ground as satisfac tory a view, without a glass, as could be dpsirt'd. A nearer view would have ena bled us to judge better of. the effects of the shots, but we were near enough for safety. As. "it was, our party were momentarily ex pecting a khell or two, and several window -nnes in the house were broken by the vio lent concussion. Tl.e steam ram "Albemarle," commanded 1-y Captain Cook, moved down the Scand f.ijrn the II ahoke river between 'two and throe o'clock, p. m., on ToursJay, accompa-,-.icd by the lit tic transport, "Cotton Plant," i:iJ the gunboat "Bornbyhell," captured at 1'iy mouth. A squadron of five United States uuhoats, which had been lyrng a, most re spectful (liiance from the mouth of Roanoke mi, c the capture of Plymouth,' as a jlett of observation, fled like sheep before the moni tor, out of ranye aud without any duwf re Mstance. As our lit'tle fleet sailed securely down the besam of the broad Albemarle, the ' Cotton Plant" was observed to lurn and re tire with (puckered speed toward the mouth ot Roanoke. Being on the -qui the, I soon perceived the cause of So midden a move. Three very lre gunboats, of a size and build hitherto unknown in our watery, and appa rently fresh from the hands of the builders, were moving swiftly around Sandy Point and d'rcc.tlj' for thr Ram. She, meanwhile, .v'ood still, her brave little consort slightly in t.he advance, and as the forward vessel came within range, sainted her with one of her d 'f'p-mouthcd guns Very promptly the Yan kees responds djwitb one of their, and the fight W'Liin. Wifh one accord, the "household, black and white, from chamber and kitchen ari l field, ran to a shaded knoll overhanging the water, whence we Ji.id a' good view of 'a scene bith magnificent and fearful.' Never, surely, did these peaceful shore3 resound with" such re verberating thunders never vere these placid waters so plowed by hostile prows and destruc tive mbsilcs. The enemy came on iu siuglcjile and' at full speed. The foremost vessel ran straight up to the Ram, as if she would run her down, veered v'J a little, passed ahead and gave her a broad hide; then ero-sed her bows, returned a;id de livered another broidsidc, and passed on out f range. The second " and third steamers moved and fired in like manner. The first re tvated Jhn.; evolutions, and was .again ful h Wed hy Ukmki,. ti.w iwia,. During this time the guns of the Ram bad been doing execution. From tho hold of the largest steamer issuod a thick Column of Mnoke, which increased as the cloud of powder smoke was tfown away. She ceased firing, and all hands bet mud to engage in subduing the lldmcs. Alter half an hour's work this was accomplished, and again she mingleVl in tho dreadful fray. Tho battle now raged moro fiercely than ever. The Ram, to uur surpri.su, hegan to move slowly toward Plymouth, fir ing regularly, but at. longer intervals, whilst the enemy pressed her more hotly. The larger steamers kept up their solemn waltz, varied with occasional digressions; the wuiaUer boats moved a little nearer and the whole nine vomited forth their shell and solid "hot at irregular but frequent intervals. Some tinits the whole number, the Ram include 1, were completely shrouded in thick, white Mnoke, which lay upon the blue, rippling, puincing waters like a thunder cloud in a 'aear summer skv, whilst nought elsa was seen tio iit,,vc, ci?tliot behind it but columns of si.uwy spray, rising' successively in long tines as me halls nchoted across the water. The shore now bears innum erable evidences of the damaee done to the enemy;: splinters, and large fragments of oak. sheathing copper fastened, portions of winaow-sasu with bits of glass and patty still adhering, pieces of pannelling and other orna mental work from cabins or saloons, several fine launches, two of which are badly shot to pieces; oars, gun-rammers, window-shutters. cabin doors, hatchment!, fragments of fine furniture and even of little articles of toilet arid table furniture, with hundreds of other little proofs, of the destruction wrought by the ffun, rather than the gnn$, ot the Bam. The battle ended on our side with the cap ture of the Bombshell, and the retreat of the Kara with damage so trifling as to seem almost joiir&culous, when we consider the great superi- Ttty or tho enemy in speed and numbers, lence, no doubt, the Herald will blazon a 'g-e?vt AVAL-VICTORY" In its most exag gerated eapitals, and the.falsehcod will be loud ly re-echoed by the whole Northern press. But I have told what I have an, as well as heard, aud as further evidence of this "victory," the enemy's boats, somewhat reduced in numbers, have Iain ever since the fight in one position; at the respectful distance of eight or ten miles from the mouth of Ronoko content, it would seem, with the glory J?) .they have acquired, instead ongoing on to annihilate the monster as they doubtless thought to have done. This would appear to be one of the most astonishing naval battles on record. At the lowest calculation, fifty guns were bearing at once upon the Ram, many of them throwing 100 pound shot and shell, as the numerous amunition boxes constanly floating ashore testi fy ; and tme of them probably of still greater calibre. Nine yunhoats engaged the Ram at once ; and that she should ave sustained for four hours their terrific fire with but one of her guns playing, sinking as well as crippling several of thm, without other injury than the loss of fifteen of her outer pfates, the lass of her flagstalf and the perforation of her smoke stack, whilst not a loak was sprung nor a man killed this sounds utterly incredible. But there are the facts. It is not difficult to deter mine oa which side res" ts the honor of victory. H. A. S. i A man named James L. Since the commencement of the war, Richmond has been a refuge for those who have been driven from their homes by our ruthless enemies.- Thousands of helpless women and child. en, not from the devastated counties of Vrginia alone, but from nearly every State of the Confederacy, have sought an asylum in our midst. Our citizens have been appealed to in numberless instances to relieve tho sick and wonnded soldiers, to furnish shoes and clothing; for soldiers in the field and hospital, and to afford food and shelter for their suffering families, and nobly have they, in the great majority of in stances, responded to every appeal. The ruppiies of provisions in this city at this time are so reduced, and the difliauUiw of ob taining others by ordinary rucaus so numerous and great, that the funds contribute for "I he rt lief oi the poor oan'accomr'i$a 'i.t littW Sa pur chasing the nocessarics .fle ltIn f iiUu ''port from the Clothing Bureau, f t --rs that there arc' moro than three thou sand females in this city who aro seeking employ ment from the Government in. vain, and that those who obtain work are not fully employed. The wages received for their work will not onable these poor women to procure a sufficiency of the plainest food for themselves and children. With out assistance, then, from the city and country generally, many instances of actual starvation must have occurred. Our City Council hai made most liberal appropriations for the purchase of supplies, both lor gratuitous distribution and for salv at cost ; but the agents employed for the pur pose have not been able to procure the quantity of provisions required. ' Under these circumstance!", we fol lhat it i our duty to appeal to urf-ilow-citizens through out' the' Confederate States, to forward, without delay, contributions of money and rojpplic to the army Committee of th'u association. Since the com;oenccinnt of tho war this Committee has labored zealouslv and faithfully for the tMnpnrnl and spiritual welfare of our soldiers and their fami lies, and the success of our. gloriout cause.. L:t those soldiers not be discouraged now, upon the eve of our severest, and, as we trust, our last and moet glorious campaign, for want of the gener ous sympathy and support of their friends at home. Shipments made-to Roger Martin, Smp i ictend ent, or Wm. V. Munford, Chairman oftho Army Committee, will be promptly attended to. And in accordance with a special agreement made with the Superintendent of the Southern Express Company, all express charges will be paid by them at Richmond Contributions of raonsy ' should also be sent to these gontlomea.
