Gik and Genius. One of our exchange
papefrs says no man of cornoa,jn ense 'ever
became a drunkard. It is the preponderance
of the animal over the intellectual. Doubt
less but this is more than can be said of
men of genius. Byron and Burns are not the
nly cases in point. Cowley owed Jin exit,
Pope tells us, to lying out in the fields over
night. Dryden hastened his death UV drink
ing to excess with Addison ; Parnel became a
sot; Churchill was " found drunk on a dung
hill," and, finally, Fope himself, by -vhom
most of these anecdotes are confirmed, is said
tiy bis' biographer to have hastened his end
bytlrinkiug spirits, uampoeii and ijieruige
it is well understoodf-are very likely to travel
the same way'. Madden intimates that John
son owed his sobriety to his head, since he
boasted of being able t guzr.le three bottle
of port at a sitting; Dr. Parr -Could endir
t vo; some of the inferior animals, we doubt
tot. more than either. The hog, however, is
an honorable exception.- He goes the whole
for evey thing bat Rum ! which is rather
too beastly for him.

AN APPBiL t0 THE PEOPLE OF Tin
CONFEDERATE STATES.
The Directors or the Young 3Ien's
Christian Association of Richmond, repe ct
fully, but etrnestly, submit to tbe benevolent and
the patriotic throughout the Confederate States,
an appeal in behilt of the Soldiers' Families in
this city. Since the commencement of the war, '
Richmond has been a refuge tor those .who
have been driven from their homes by
our ruthless enemies. Thousands of helpless
women and child. en, not. from tbe devastated,
counties of Virginia alone, but from nearly every"
State of the Confederacy, have sought an asylum
in our midst. Oar citizens have been appealed to
in numberless instances to relieve the sick and
wounded soldiers, to furnish shoes and clothing .
for soldiers in the field and hospital, and .to afford
food and shelter for their suffering families,- and
nobly have they, in the great majority of la.
stances, responded to every appeal.
The ruppiies of provisions in this city at this
tiue are so reduced, and the difSeulties of ob
taining others by ordinary rowans so numerous
and great, that the tends contributed for the re
lief ot the poor can accomplish but little iu pur
chasing the necessaries of life.
1,1 a written report from the Clothing Bureau,
it appears that there arc more than three thou
sand feroaly? in thii city who are seeking employ
ment f roiu Ihe Gov? rr.:uent in vain, and that those
who obtain woikaretiot fullv employed. Tho
wages received tor their work will not enable
these poor women to procure a sutlicincy of the
plainest food for themselves and children. With
out assistance, th?n, from the city nid ountty
g.-nfcrally, many instances of actual starvation
must have occurred. Our City Council hai ntado
most liberal appropriations for tb purchase of
supplies, both for gratuitous distribution and for
sal .- at cost ; but ths splits employed fr th jur-
pose have not bcn able to preure the quantity
of provisions required.
