HUIIKAjS, I IIAVK LRAKXKD- WITH GREAT pain that there have been latterly naia?roH3 de sertions i from the ranks of onr eallant arm v.frd that there are many persons in the country who incite and eli-courag-e tliese desertions and harbor and conceal these misguided men at home, imtead of encouraging then to return to duty ! --i Now therefore I, ZMHULON 15. VANCE; Goternorof the State of rtb Carolina, do issuethis my proclamatfon commanding all such evil disposed persons to desist from such base, cowardly aid treasonable conduct, and warn ing them that they" will subject themselves to indictment and punishment in the civil courts of the Confederacy as well as-; to t lie everlasting contempt, ana detestation or all good and honorable men Certainly no crime could u,.- rcr.ri cowardice more abject, no treason more base, tuiiu for a citizen of the State, enjoying its privileges and protection Without shar ing its dangers, to persuade those who have bad the cour age to go forth in defense t i their counry, vilely to de sert the colors which they 'nave sworn to uphold, wher. a miserable death or a vile, s-kulkmg aiul ighominioas ex iwtercc mt tie the inevitable conseqivences: no plea can excuse it. Thv, father or the brother wto doe.t sImkiUI be sl ot instead of his deluded victim, for he deliberately destroys the soul and riiauhflbd of h'13 own Hesh and blood. And the same is done bv him who harbors and conceal the di-erter. For who" can respect either the One or the other? What honest man-will ever wish or permit his own brave mtns or patriotic daughters, who bore their j.art witli credit in this great struggle for independence, to a-fociate, even to the tliird and fourths generations, with the vile wretch win skulked in the woods, or the still viler coward who aided him, while his bleeding coun try was calling in vain lor his help? ltth are enemies, sneaking, mean enemies to ther country, before whom our open foes will be infinitely preferred. Jh.tb are foes . to their own kindred ami noble countrymen who are elec trvfving the world be their gallant deeds, and pouring out their blood upon "the held of battle to protect those very men who are sapping the- vitals of our strength. And woe unto you, deserters, andyour aiders and abettors, when peace be'ing.made and independence secured, these brave comrades whom ye have drsorteJ in the hour of their trial shall return honored and triumphant to their homes ! Ye that hide your guilty faces by day.und prowl like outlaws about bv night, robbing the w f e and mother of your noble d.-femlers of their little means, while tlu-y are far away- facing the enemy, do you think ye can es cape a just and .damning vengeance '-wben the dy of reck oning comes? And ye that shelter, conceal, and feed tkese miserable depredators and stimulate them to their intVrnaJ deeds, think you that ve will be spared? Nay! rest assured, observing and never failing eyes have mark ed you, every one. And when the overjoyed wife wel comes once more her-brave and honorable httsband to his home, and tells him how in the long years of his absence, in the lonclv hours, of the night, you who had been hi comrades ludelv entered her house, robbed her and her children of their bread and. heaped insult and indignities upon her defenceless head,1 th? wrath of that heroi? hus band will make you regret in the bitterness of your cow aullv terror that you were ever born. Instead of a few scattered militia, the land will be full of veteran soldiers, before whose honest taees you will not have courage to raise your eyes from the earth. If permitted to live in the State at all you will be i'imou. You will be hustled from the polls, kicked in the streets, an honest jury Will not believe you on oath and honest men everywhere will shun you as a pestilence, for he who lacks courage and patriotism can have no other good quality or redeeming virtue. Though many of you rejected the pardon hereto fore offered ym . and I am not authorized to 'promise it. vet I am assured tlmt no man will be shot who shall vol untarily return to duty. This is the only chance to re deem yourselves from the disgrace and ignominy which you are incurring. Again our troops have met the enrvwy and a great and glorious victory lias been won. Hut several thousand of our soldiers fell in achieving it for us. Every man is need ed t replace the ullan't dead, and preserve an unbroken front to our stnl powerful enemy. Lniess desertion is prevented our strength must depart from our armies, and desertion can never be stopped while either through a falio and mistaken sympathy or downright disloyalty, they receive any counteiiace or protection at home. 1 therefore appeal to all good citivns and true patriots in the State to assist my ollicVrs in arresting deserters, and to frown down all thos,- w ho aid and assist them. IMace the brand upon them and make them feel the scorn and contempt of an outraged people. Unless the good and the patriotic all over the land arise as one man to arrest thi dangerous evil, it will grow until our army is wi ll nigh ruined. The danger of starvation having happily pass d away the approaching and apparently bounteous harvest giving evidence of ample supplies for the coming vcar our great army in Virginia again jubilant over a AUCTION AND PRIVATE SALENS. This region of country is not surpassed by any in Tex as. "in REGULARITY OF SEASONS, DELIGHTFUL CM MATE AND HEALTH OF THE LOCALITY; and the tract itself forms one of the best investments for present use or future profjt to be found in Texas, THE LAND OF PROMISE AND OF PEACE. During the dry year of 18G0 in Texas, Mr. Gonolly's farm, (on a portion of the tract.) yielded an average of 50 bushels of corn, and 15 bushels of wheat to the acre. There are numerous flouring milt in Milan, and the adjoining counties of Roll and Williamson. ' All the small grains grow well, cotton yields one bale to the acre, horses, mules, sheep, bogs and HORNED CATTLE THRIVE WITHOUT WINTERING and are largely raised throughout the region. The titles to the land have never been questioned, and are unques tionable, and there are no squatters on it. The settled portion of the State extends far beyond Milan co-inty, in every direction. The property now belongs to J. S. Thrasher, Superin tendant of the Press Association, and one half of it is of fer editor sale, only because the acceptance of the duties of his public position involves the necessity 01 a partial change in his investments.
