' Up to Wednesday night, the third day of the attack, nineteen hundred and seventy-two of their missies struck Sumter, and including to-day about twenty-Are hundred hare itruck. Tbe damage of coarse, ia considerable, and for the last two days all of tbe guna nf tho South face hare been dis abled. Yesterday, about four o'clock, tbe Ironclads form ed in line of battle to renew the attack on Sumter, but the Fort opened at long range from the East face and they retired without attacking. To day 'the Ironndet and two Monitors kept up the fire on Wagne. at inter vals, and the Yankee's sappere bare begun to make ap preaches on -that battery from their nearest work. A special dispatch to the Appeal, dated Jackson, 18th, say, that the party of Federal caval ry who left Yasoo city, had reached Durant Station on the Mississippi Central rUil Road, where tbey captured a train and cut the telegraph wires. Serious destruction northward on the road is apprehended. A special dis patch to the Appeal dated Canton, 19th, says the Yan kees bad captured Vaden, but that neither the rolling stock or track bad been injured. The Yankees are car rying two engines and a train northward. A heavy raid is reported as coming 'southward from the Charleston road. - Yankee Tyranny at Vicksburg. J acxsoii, Aug. 20 Federal tyranny at Vicksburg is daily growing more oppressive. Peaceable citizens are arrested and put in jail upon the least suspicion ofdisloy alty. Some of the more outspoken ones are sent out of the lines, not to return, on pain of being treated as trai tor to the United States Government. This News from the Forts and Battebiich PilOOBtSs AND RK8DLT8 OF THE BOIBAB)UEMT. The firing on Monday night had beep slow, hut early in the morning tbe bombardment was renewed with no Itfio fury than was exhibited on the previous day. Throe Monitors and the Ironsides assaulted Battery Wagner, throwing at the same tiioe from their posi tion on tbe other side of Cumming's Point, an occa sional shell at Fort Sumter. This contiuued till ten o'clock. At which hour the fleet ceased its fire and drew off for fi while. "" In the ruean white, the land batteries of the enemy, made up of fits Parrott and two lighter gans, were directing-their shots at Sumter. They opened fire about 6 . m., and kept pounding away for the re rn.itiidrf nf the day. Their fire, however, though, heavier, perhapB,ly a gun or two, Was less continu ous and less accurate than on Monday, owing,' we have it a poo unquestionable authority, to the act that they, were much and seriously embarrassed in their operations by our batteries -upon . James Island. Between two and three o'clock, P, M., a single. Monitor engaged Fort Wagner, and was driven off in a disabled condition. That obstinate fort U as strong as ever , and the brave officer at present in command, Ool. Keitt, declares that be will hold it as long as there is a hillock of sand upon the Island. ' There were do casualties in Fort Sumter up to a late hour yesterday afternoon, and up to one o'clock,' p. tn.i none at Fort Wagner. - The firing, of course, slackened at night, About one gun teing heard in fifteen minutes. I re peat that the men who now owe duty to their country, who have been called out and have not yet reported for dut. or who have absented themselves from their posts, are sufficient in number, to secure us victory in tbe strug gle now impending. I call on you, then, my countrymen, to hasten to your camps, in obedience to the dictates of honor and duty, and summon those who have absented themselves with out leave, or who have remained absent beyond the peri od allowed by tbeir furloughs, to repair without delay to their respective commands, and I do hereby declare that I grant a general pardon and amnesty to all officers and men within the Confederacy, now absent without leave, who shall, with the least poseiblo delay, return to their proper pints of duty ; but no excuse will be received for any delay boyond twenty, dara after the first publication ot this proclamation in the State in which the absentee may be at the date of the publication: Thia amnesty and pardon sball extend to all who have been accused, or who hare been convicted and are undergoing sentence for ab sence without leave or desertion, excepting only those who hare been twice convicted of desertion. Finally, I conjure iny countrywomen the wirea, moth ers, sisters and daughters of the Confederacy to use their all powerful influence in aid of this call, to add one crow ning sacrifice to those which iheir patriotism has ao free ly and constantly offered on their country's altar, and to lalta care that none who owe service in the field shall be sheltered at home from the disgrace of having deserted their duty to tbeir families, to their country, and to their Go''. . , ; 1..- k.nJ anA tko n.-i nf kj SSAL. j- Confederate States, at Richmond, thia 1st day of August, in the year of our Lord one thous and, eiirht hundred and slxtr-tbree.
