I believs that but tew ot those absent are actuated by unwillingness to serve their coun try : but that many have found it difficult to resut the temptation of a visit to their homes apd the loved ones from wbcm they have been so long separated ; that oth ers have left for temporary attention to their affairs, with the intention of returning, and thea have shrunk from o o.,nnnniMnfrt(.ir violation of duty : that others, arain, have left their posts from mere restlessness and desire of change, each quieting the upbraidings of his conscience, by persuading himselt that his individual ser vices could have no influence on the general result. These and other causes (although fir lees disgraceful thin the desire to avoid danges, or to escape from the sacrifices required by patriotism) are, nevertheless, griev ous fiults, and place the cause of oar beloved country, and of everything we hold dear, in imminent peril.
