Some believe Meade will not attack Lee in front, but -will attempt a flank movement to Fredericksburg. Among the rcent arrivals here is Senator Johnston, of Arkansas. Further correspondence 'between Ould and Meredith relative to the exchange of priouers is published. The former, under date of October '20th, proposes that all officers and men on both sides be released in conformity with the provisions of the cartel, and the excess on the one side or the other to be paroled. Meredith replies at length,'and charges that a system of exchanges was first rtirst interrupted by the Confederate Government in de fining its purpose to make certain distinctions in the treatment of a particular class of troops. 'and: Gtneral Echols, commanding the Confederates, with about 2.000. The great disparity cd' numbers between the opposing force? niaoe it necessary for General Fchoh to ret: eat, after a fight of two hours, in which lie is reported to have lost very heavily in kill ed and wounded. We have no particulars of 'casualties. It was stated Saturday night by passengers on;. the Western train, that our troops were retreating in thedi rection of Salem, sixty miles west of this city, on the Yir ginia and Tennessee Railroad, and that they were being closely pursued by the enemy, wboj it was feared, unles checked, would succeed in reaching the railroad. The movement is regarded as a diversion in favor of IJurnsidrf in Kast Ttnnesse, vvh is being rather hotly pressed by our force? there. Reinforcements are being sent forward to the support of General Echols, and it is hoped will arrive in time to save the railroad from damage and the rich counties bordering it from plunder and devastation. The Virginian says General Jones telegraphed Gen. Nichols, Saturday, for reinforcerant3 fo meet Averill, who wa3 supposed to be approaching the Virginia and Tennessee Road, at Salem. Rev. S. 1). We are informed by a Uni-' ted States army ofllcer that when ha reached Versailles, Ripley countv, this side ofthe Ohio line, he found in the safj ofthe Clerk's oilice three hundred thousand dollars done up in packages, sent home by soldiers in our ranks, fighting for their country and our own gloriom flag, to their fimili-'s. Morgan had the money in his hands, but, understanding from wb"m it was and what its destina tion, immediately returned it, remaiking that if it was Uncle Sam's money ha would take it, but never would he plunder any brave man in the field, conscientiously per forming his duty as he understood it.
