' PEACE PHlJPOSITIO'N'S. Inasmuch, as a pxo)osition has Iv-en ir.ade in the Li? -.col n C'usn-Bs to appoint, three Cumrni-ionera to vit: nichni ood and arrange terms .of peace on the lasis of a ' re-;mion, arxl although that preposition vyas voted down by a large major ity y we think the C"nf'"'erate Congress might now. with propriety. a;,- . j p iur Conmi-sioners to go to Washington and arrange j terms peace on the basis of separation -and tho iu ! ;lepundence of the Confederacy. We have no hope that such propr -bit Tons would be eitertained, at this time, by the Lincoin governuieut, but it would. do no-harm to make the trial, it is weil known to every intolligeut man that our government is anx i -us and uady at any time to make peace on such terms. The propositi-vn ought to be made, if for no other reason, in order fo satisfy that portion of our people A-ho seem to thieds? that all tbac is necessary to'se enro peace is f r our authoriti'.M to make some port of proposals! to tlie; Lincoin gtjvernment. If the com missio'MTs arc app..iutel,'ar;d Lincoln relus'-s to re ceive them, win all our people wiil theu te what I th-y have to depend on. and ail who are not traitois at henrt to their country wiil co-operate in sustain ;' iug our cause and producing concord and unity aruoug I ourselves. The propohitiou ought to be made for another rea ! son : nn onlcr t' thjw the responsibility of rejertiig : - on tho Lincoln government. .The people at th0 North might be enabled -to see the matter in a new i light, and a revolution in public sentiment effected ; .which might overthrow the Lincolu dyuasty and place tnen iu power wlio would' be disposed to commence in gotnii:r).s fur feac(;. A prop"-,ion of l Ins sort ought to come frv.u our' untinal authorities and no': from a State Legislature or a Slate Convention. Separate State action on this : subject woaid produce discord aud fail to effect any j good, nowever patriotic the t5uject of the movers might be. Jiesides, Congress is the proper place where , such propositions should emanate, i We do not make these suggestions At the instiga j tiou of auy man in or out of office but we make them ' I because we presume it is a fact beyond doubt thai, i our authorities have ways beeu wi'liug to make I peace on tenns whieh will acknowledge the indepen ! f'ence of tlie Confederate States. This being so, we think the appvtotment of peace commissioners by j Congress would do no harm if; it failed, to secure ! peace. And wo think it would be best for the prop : osilion for the appointment of such Commissioners to ! come from some member of Congress from North Car- olina, or South Carolina, or Georgia., j We presume all our readers understand the ppsi i tion we have occupied before and since the commenee I noent of the war. We did not vote for the first se i cession candidates for the State Convention from this county, hut from tho day that Lincoln called for troops to subjugate Southern people to the preseut time we have been in favor of prosecuting the war until our J independence was acknowledged by tho Northern i government. We are-stiil in favor of a vigorous pros- I ecution of the war, believing that any terms of set- j tlemeut that do act recognize us as au independent j natiou, would prove disastrous, ruinous and disgrace- i ful to every free-bori. Southern man. (Besides this, ; no one has given the Conlederate authorities a more cordial support than we have ) And we cannot see that there is any conflict between these sentiments and a proposition to appoint commissioners to arrauge for peace ou the basis of separation and independence.
