In the Englifli monthly review for
April, 1788, after reviewing the fecond
volume of Dr. Adams’s * Defence of
the Conflitutions of the United States
of America,’ the reviewers add—
* Dr. Adams, we cannot doubt, has
been a6luated by a defire to ferve his
native country by his labours, and we
hope his countrymen will entertain a
grateful fenfe of their obligations to

him for his continued exertions iri
their behalf. We finccrely pray that
their councils may be fodire6lcd, as to.
enable them ultim.^tely to adopt that:
form of government which is bell:,
fitted to their fitnation and circurtl-.
fiances, and which ftiall tend in the
moll cffe6lual manner to prderve the.
liberty of the citizens, and promote
the general profperity of the Hates.’
The exportation of rum and fpirits
from thcBritilh Weft-India iflaiuU to
the United States of North-America,
is prohibited by a late order of tlic Eri-
tifh government; a vcffel that was
loaded with rum about the end of L en-
tember laft, bound for New-Yoik, was
obliged to reland the cargo.
It is computed that the Emperor
a has loft by ficknefs and the fword,
fince the commencement of the war
with the Ottomans, very near eighty
thouiand men.
According to the following relatioix
from a perfon juft returned from the
Labrador coaft, the imitative faculty
in monkeys feems to exceed every thing
fhort of human.—A failor having a
number pf red woolen caps, Sec to dif-
pofe of among the natives, went on
fhore for that purpofc ; his way to a
fettiement lying through a woods very
copiouflyinhabited by the fpecies above-
mentioned, and it being mid day, put
a cap on his head, and laying the others
by his fide, he determined upon a lit
tle repofe under the fliade of a plan
tain tree. To his utter aftonifliment,
when he awoke, from the fpccim.en he
had given bis imitative oblci vers of the
ufeof his caps, he beheld a number pf
them upon the heads of the monkeys
on the trees, round about him, while
the wearers were chattering in an un-
utual manner. Finding every attempt
to regain them fruitleL, he at length
in a fit of rage and difappointment,
and under the fuppofition the one he
retained was not worth taking aw’ay,
&c. pulled the fame from his head,
and throwing it upon the ground ex-
claimcd-:r^‘ here d—n you, take it
among ye,” which he had no fooner
done, than to his great farprile, the
obfervant menkeys did the lame, by
which means he regained the greateft
part of his property.
