Aggies Roll Over Virginia State 50-44 GREX^SBORO — Setting a terrific pace tiiroughout t b -e game, Roliie Bernard’s Aggies upset a highly favored Viivinia State five, here last Saturday, 60-44. Prior to the game, the fans stood for one minute to pay tribute to the late Dr. James H. Naismith, o,riginator of basket ball, as provided in the recom mendations adopted at the 27th annual meeting of the ClAA. Virginia State’s defeat proved a surprise to the packed houae since the Aig^es had dropped one earlier in the week to Tuskegee institute, 40-9S. 1b the first contest the locals played rather lacked ball show- ma iadilferent offense up to the last ten minutes of play. Tha Aggiea turned the heat on after this time but the Tuskegee lead was too great to be whittled down. But the clash with the Trojan| on Saturday night was altoge ther different affair aa » newly inspired and revamped A and T -output took the floor with Co^apt. Roan and Higgins shifted to the guard posts. Both did superb 3oba with Qiggihs holding Percy Smith, the New Jersey flash, who had previously scored 26 points against toward Thursday tiight to niae point. « ifhe Aggies went ^gn a shoot- ‘ ing apree early in the first half with Co-Captains Roan and Coles and Evans sharing in the scoring, Virginia State tightened dur- the latter part of the first half and started iU offenae to rolling. The score at half time ' was 23-17, the, Aggies leading. Speeding up the game. Smith and Brown-«ent the Trojan* in to a two point lead in the ^early part of the second half. ' But they were unable to keep step with the Agpes as Co-Capta. Roan and OoIm marshalled their forces together to completely dazzle the Trojan defense by a beautxfttl exhM>iUon of shooting from all parts,of the floor. It .'was nip and tuck up to the last five minutes of pliQr when the Aiggiea went into a six point lead and maintained it. The Hampton Pirates opened their home seaaon aa th^ lost a thriiling game to the Taakegee Hg«n by a score of 8X-44. The game waa very fast, and it was juat as exciting as any game that has been played la Uie Pirates The pme gc^t under aa Jack son OanqitOB lorwart^ took the tip off and made a vwy quick basket. This lead was short liv^ ed, Itacau— Jones dropped beautiful shot for Tuskegee, and from this point it was hard fought thrilling 'conteet. During tha fint balf Jonaa and W. Rio- binaon kept the Tigers lAead of the Piratea with several specta cular shota, while Jackao^i, Cooper, and Hudgins paced the Piratea. The half ended with ^sricegee out in front— the score 27-17. TraiUng bv eleven points at the opening of the second half, the Pirat& started at a furbas pace. Cooper, who played a brillant game at guard for the Pirates dribbled the length of the floor three times to account for feix successive points for his team.\Near the closing minutes of the game the Pirates pulled within four points of the Tigers but shooting of co-captain Jones and the floor work of co-captain Bill Rol>^on kept the Pirates from taking the lead. * Hudgins, Pirate captain and center tried desparately to pull bis team in to the lead by scoring nine points in the 1st five minutes of play. PBH^ytTON, Notary Pubiic ily CoBnuaakm aspiraa Jaly 10th, 1940 Eagles Stop Virginia State 37 to 33 BY WILLIAM '‘SMILING” TUCK DURHAM — The Eagles of North Carolina College began their home basketball season with a thritlirtg 37-3S victory over Virginia State College' here Monday night, January 15, bafore more than 1,500 spectators. Although this was the seventh game of the season ftir the Saglea, it was the first time the Durhsm fans had seen their favorite ^eam in action and the result was that every iach of standing room in the gymnasium was taken. _ The N. C. College boys gained a small lead over the visitors in the opsning minutes of the game and never allow^ the Virginians even to tie the scoi% Burghardt called out his shock absorbing “short” team and sent in the rangy regulars of which there is not a man leu than 6 feet tall. A4though the regulars were slow n warming up, they manag ed to stay ahead so that at half time they were barely leading 10-18. ^ u _ u" It took the best that t )) e Eagles had to offer in the se cond half to stave off the des perate attempting which the Virginians waged to get ahead, but the eonnbination of Anders d Dowing on defenae with Ennis and Colbert sparicing the offense proved sufficient insur ance for victory. Ennis, center for the Eagles, was plainly the star of the game. Not only did he lead the scoring with 16 points, but his flashy, passing and fighting spirit kept his opponents guess ing all the time. He waa the only N. C. College man who remain ed one the court during every minute of play. Colbert account ed for IS of the Eagles points Greenville S. C. Notes BY. REV. M. McMOORE GREiaJVILLE, S.
