Nortbcutt PHONE A^|491 ■ 107 s. MANGUM STREET CHARLOTTE — Tan of tU thirty-eight of F^rview Homes, Charlotte’s low coat housing pro ject for Negroes will be opened Joly 16, according to J. Frank Hanley, manager of tha project, who has recently returned to city from Jacksonville, Florida, where he went for observation and study. P^tically all of the buildings are under construction, and it is necessary to drive or walk through the entire project to fully realize its magnitude. The project fronts on Oaklawn Ave nue, but extends far bff the street. It has been named “Fair- view Homes.” Four hundred and fifty families will make their homes here when the project has been completed. Forty two acres of land are used for the project. 7%e buildings alone will cost nearly nin^ hundred thous^d dollars, anfi one hundred and fourteen dollars will go for plumbing, forty four. thousand dolhirs for site improvement and sixteen thousand dollars for landsc^tiping. The total amount of contracts is $1,015,061. One important feature of the program is that the City of /Charlotte, under it» kgi^ement with the government, will elimin ate one substandard dwelling. by demolition, cloaing, or repadr by compulsion, for each unit in project. This applies to the white project as well. In acklition to the 46^! living oiiits, an adminstration and rec reation building will be provid ed. The buildings are to be two atory and one story f^lt roof roof types, and will cover only alightly more than 10 percent of total area of the project, giving plenty of room for outdoor re creation, ventilation, etc. Included in the cost of rent will be kitchen ranges, with facil ities for hot w^er, connbinaton sink and laundry tups, medicine cabinet and complete bothroom facilities. What thia will mean to the community as a wthole is incal- cul^le, but it is believed that the project will not only elimin ate some of the city’s worse eye sores, but wll, by example, help to brinti: forth a cleaning out of the slums by showing that low rents can profit^ibly he charged for decent living quarters. That this sort of program is vitally imp>rtant in Charlotte is evidenced by the fac t that among the substajidard dwelling units: 6,116 are in need of major repairs or unfit for use; 6,044 huve no indoor flush toilets; “WHERE SATISFACTION IS A CERTAINY” ficgal Ice Cream Co PINTS 2»c ICE CREAM QUARTS 34c % ^ Made Fre*li Daily From GvBnine Gold Seal Products.
