She is to be com mended for again representing Durham in the excellent manner which is typical of her. . Every- •ne from Durham and vicinity who i^ttended the tourney were proudly rooting for her ;knd even those who remained at home took it as a mS'tter of course that she should be so very Buceessful against some of the kest tennis material that the south had to offer. (See Story for her many triumps). CollioB anid Dawson came through for Durham in the junior doubles. THEY’LL DO IT EVERY TIME ANOTHI^R OF DUSlHAM’S FCM)iIlSD4G baseball teims has received something * ^t back in spirit and morale in the sud den dismissal of their manas^er. 1%e DurhAn Black Bulls, who had begun a fairly successful sea son under the management of Burntce Richardson, have given their maivlger the boot because his selection of players (pitchers) in a certain game did not meet their approval. It was in the game here d few weeks'ago be tween the Bulls and Yanceyville that Manager Richardson chose to replace pitchers a bit mora Irequently th«lii hb players thought wise and the result was that they protested openly and violently. They protested so ve hemently that they reached the point of refusing to play another frame if Richardson continued to iat.kntain the position of man ager. So now they have another manager. Joseph Riley is his name. Thero are very few teams anywhere tlyAt can stand build ing up new players and charging managers over and over in the same season ;and it is almost tragic that a team that showed a* great promise ^ this one would allow the mere selection of pitch ers for a game to cause such an upset. Richardson likes to have things his wfiy and all that but, with hie experience, which is greater than that of the players, and with his holding the position of manager, it seems tiiat he should have U little liberty at us ing hie judgement. But that’s history now; the Bulls have a new manager and almost a tciMn and cpMider themselves starting out fresh at this the middle of the season. Manager Riley has great hopes for the tesin. TOE BUOCANEEIRS were really at their beet Wednesday night of last week when they handed the Walltown boys their pesting of the season to main tain their pVa/;e at the top o^ the Bull city softball eagrue. C.— Young Jimmy McDaniels, s*port- ing the colors of Xavier Univer sity and fresh from his triumph in the Southwestern Tourna ment held at Prarie View Texas, came into North Carolina last week June-25-‘28 and virtually pulled a blitzkrieg so far ae tennis goes. Last year it was Cohen who pulled the upset to win the Old North State title and this year Jimmy came back to show to the folks that all of this had been a mistake and with a mastery of strokes that l>rought plenty of “Ahas” and Plenty of applause went ahead to walk through the field of ranking stars that had gathered at Fay etteville to win the eighteenth tournament sponsored by North Carolina Tennis Association. Cohen whipped Duncan ad Saitch to gain his place in the final draw while McDaniels had to wade through McGriff Senior and McDuffie 6-1; 6.3 and (bar ter and Plummer 6.1; 6.0. Everyone was wondering what the McGriff-McGriff combination could do with Cohen and Mc- D^Vniels. It wasn’t long before this wonder had reached the point where everyone knew. There was nothing that they could do. McGriff and McGriff started out trying to keep Mc Daniels and Cohen ^A^ay from the attacking position at the net by lobbing hem back every time an advance was made. Both the highier the lobs the harder these tow h'cj^ed boys hit the ball. McGriff Junior was. able' to keep the ball in play much more than the father and with a much more consistent game. However, the tejim work of Xavier boya soon told on the opponents and the match went up 6.2; 7.(5. In the junior events Roland McDaniels found his bracket lin- ied with lota of rough stuff. In and Hunt in order to gain his, the first match his teammate. The playgrounds will remain open from 2:30 o’clock in the afternoon until just because sun down e^h week day. Sj>ot. Last year Hunt had up- ►et the naitton’s number one singles player in_the semi finals round only to lose to Clif Russell of Tuskegee. But this year was different. McDaniels, cold, heartless, and uncanny took his game. Everything he did was >ust as it should have been. His overhead game was tops, his ground strokes chipped the lines and kept the chalk fly ing and never did he seem to be in trouble. In fact, he walked through his bracket with only a loss of six games. Cohen was never ^le to keep th^e ball play and time after McDaniels made him error on his cross court fire as both boys kept the ball with everything they could muster. jack JOHNSON. Floiwers carried him to two deuce sets with McDaniels winning 8-6; 7j6. Prom here he went a- head to gain the finals by defeat ing Ed Bouey also of Richmond. In the upper part of the brokets Bobby Ashford of Columbia, S. C. shot himself into the lime of 6..1; 6...0. light by his smooth strokes by debeating Robinson and Simp kins of Greensboro. In the finals of this junior match Ashford was the steadier of the two players. He lost the first set to McDaniels 5.7, but came back in the winning third and second sets by a score of 7._5; 6.2. FLQRICE HOLMES WINS THEN LOSES The mixed doubles Snitch and Conich of New York facing Heifcin and Jones of Niorth Carol^ Saitch and Conich were too steady for the Carolinians and they went a- head to win in straight sets 6.2; 6.4.
