Oee Off In^perty Driven Snfkient For Accident "Your* may be the only oar on the road and you still will stand a chane« of teing involved in a serious accident unless you drive at a safe speed,'' Ronald Hocutt, director of the High way Safety IHvision, said .this week. Hocutt made this statement after studyinir the 1940 record with respect to single rasponsi- bility accidents on North Osro- lina streets and highways. Sin gle reaponsiWlity acd^nts are accidents involving duly one vehicle and one driver, as when a car overturns in tl» roadway, runs off the road, or strikes a fixed object. “It doesn’s take two cars to make an accident," he declared. “It only tak^ one car driven improperly, Last year, 988 per sons were killed in traffic ac cidents in North Carolina, and 280 of these were killed in single responsibility accidents. « Pifty- foar were kiilid in cars that struck fixed objects, such ai btidg* pplm, on on th* right-of-way. And 161 were Idlled in cars tiiat fot out of eontrol and ran tba road. Sixty-eight were bilitd in cars that overturned in tbia road way. " "A large majority of th«s« accidents are a dire«t tesult of excessive speed," the safety di- i*ector said. "Cars just don’t turn over in the roadway or go sailing into a ditch or field un less they are being' driven so fast that their drivers are unable to control them, “It is speed that is killins: peo ple every day on North Carolina highways, and until speeding is discouraged by unrelenting and impartial enforcement, we need not expect any reduction in single responsibility accidents. The veterinarian says that at least one-fifth of today’s annual loss of b*fa[y pigs, calves and other livaatock could be sAvad if every farmer would join in this effort. Qld barnyards and dirty livestock quarters harbor millions of ffenhs of livestock diseases—such as cholera, en teritis, erysipelas, and other fa tal livestqefc i^agtMa. These germs are passed from one gen eration of livestock to another until quarters are properly cleaned. Dr. Grinnells says that wiiaa farmers wili use extra cars to prevent baby pig lossea at farrowing time, and to have pigs immunized against chol era aa early as possible. Rais ing of pigs on fresh pasture, away from old hog lots, is also a profitable practice. » “The Nation is being called upon to increase its livestock production for National De fense,” the veterinarian declar ed, “and farm clean-up weeki can be a big factor in prevent-» ing costly disease losses if all farmeiTB wil^ cooperate. jTest AirExpresTi C- T.
