T.’s BLACK .WHITE, PELLOW, BSOWN New York City is my City. J was bosn in this City; my child hood wa« largely ipent here. T went sway in the summers, but all of my education up to thr? age of lii was carried on in New ' low, and I like to visit the dif ferent sections, each one. of which hAs a flavor of some dif ferent nationality. I have griev ed Over tile City’s sliiois, but I have visited them. 1 have re gretted it when I felt that we Yoric City. After that age I liv^ were lagging behind in making ed away at different times for | our public school system better long periods of time, but I never jjy year, or that we did not have eome back without the teeling playgrounds enough for our that I am coming home and thi8 is the place where I belong. I’ve spent many hours visiting th>’ beautiful things of this city, it.i churches, its cathedrals, its pic tures galleries, its shops. I lov.i to stand on a rainy day and look down Fifth Avenue, and on n clear night I love to come a- cross the Bay*^and see the lights go on in all of Now York City’-S buildings. I like to fly over the City and see it as panorama oe- TlMTESTIIIIIONYtf THOUSANDS! But, good or bad, I’ve loved and still do love this City, with its people, black white, yellow, brown; some ot them new comers, some of them having lived here a long while, thong-h never quite casting off the country of their birth, some of them descended from ances tors who may have come over in the Mayflower; all of them hu man beings and citizens of n great metropolis. j ONE KAOE, ONjB R^cffcor Dosa not MAKE NATION OREAT I should like to congratulate our Mayor "who has one of the most impoi'tant jobs to be done in our nation. He has accom plished' a great deal while he has been Mayor and I hope he will continue his interest in the children and in the young peo ple as well as in the other citi zens, and see to it that those who can protect themselves are well taken care of. He likes to see the precedent established here in this City which has been the first to welcome so many new citizens, that those who need protection can get it front their Government. Now we, in this city, face grave responsibility. What we do will make a pattern for many I other people in many other parts of th« country. It is quite true that New Y»rk City is not ex actly repreientativa of th« Unit ed States as a whole, but many ^people all over the United Stated look at what happens iti Nev York City and aro influenced by it, whether -they live in a prairie town in Kansas, or on thte coast of Maine' or California. Here, in miniature, is the melting pot — the place where people who formerly were citizens of every coontry in the world are be coming citizens of the United States. Htffe they learn that a nation cun be great because it is bound together by an idea that the nation does not have to bi> of race or of one religion, but its people do have to beliov.’ that ther^ are a few things worth living for and worth dying for and those beliefs are what create unity and make uf? a nation. or anv SCARBOROUGH & HARGETT FUNERAL DIRECTORS Ambulance Service Phones: Day J-3721 - Night J-3722! 522 E. DURHAM. N. C. I NO RACE, OR COLOE SUPEBIOS We, as a nation, believe that ev»>ry man has a right to woi'- •hip God in his own way nnd so there is no discrimination shown before the Law in this country for any ^an, because of hia re ligion. It states in our Constitu tion that all men are created equal. We do not mean by that that God endows every man with the same powers or places him in the same environments; ,we mean that in the eyes of the Creator who knows all there is to know about human beings, every man has an equal chance to prove himself if he '.uses his ability as well as his environ ment will allow. We are not the judges of what makes men equal, hut we of all people should not say that the peope of one race of one color are better than other. Our concern is that every race and eVery color and every humaiij' being shall have an equal opportunity to develof) in each generation to the limits of their ability. We wjll have bad people among fUS, but they will not be all white or all blft(;k or all gentile or all .Tew; there will be fewer bad people as justice and economic a n il educational opportunities ar? opened to all. ^ WHAT WE FICffiT FOR We fight a war today sendini? our men to the far corners of the world, and the princip.il things for which we fi^ht are involved in these questions at home. If the -Axis powers were to win, there would be no free dom anywhere in the world. We think it worth sacrificing our lives and the lives of those whom we love to prevent slavery and preserve the host of real democracy upon the earth. How illogical we will be if wc do not watch our own atitude and wipe out of our own hearts what Viola Clayfor Returns fo Rock Casfle BOCK CASTLE, VIRGINIA. Here at home there are specific things that Ave can do — wc can make up our minds that we will work with any other human being w\o does his daily work beside us, and that we will not in(uire to his rale or religin, only as to whether he’s doing an honest job. We can make up our minds that we, ^^ijU behave with cour tesy to those a1)out us, and ask only that they will behave in the Same way and allow us to do our business undisturbed. We can decide that in public ronvey- ancea' Avhere each one of us pays for a seat we will not look askance at Our neighbors, no niatter what his race or his re ligion.
