HOLDS MONTHLY MEET District Number Twelve of White Rock Baptist Church held its monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Beatrice Noel. The meet ing was opened in the usual man ner with the presiUent presid ing. The “Secret Place” was read and discussed by Mr. Brig- gers. A most delectable repast was served the ten members pre sent. The August meeting will be held at the home of Ervin Trice, 908 Whitted Street. Mrs. R. Southerland will be in charge of the le^n. Mrs. Beatrice Noel, president; Mrs. Ora Fritzgerald vice-president and Mrs. Roberta Perry, secretary. MRS. KISZIA ROYSTER OBSERVES 66th BIRTHDAY Mrs. Kiszia Royster celebrat ed her 66th birthday Sunday, July 16th at the home of her son. Rev. W. C. Manson, 510 East End Avenue. All of her children were present along with 29 oth er guests. A delicious dinner was served and enjoyed by all. Mrs. Royster received man beau tiful and useful gifts. VISITING AUNT Little Miss Barbara Jean Mar tin of Washington, D. C. is vis iting her aunt, Mrs. Mildred M. Hill on Fayetteville Street. LEAVES CITY Miss Vivian Markham of Pearsontown left the city Mon day, July 17th for Greensboro where she will attend camp for a week for the 4-H Club. The speaker for the week will be Rev. James Stewart of this city. DISTRICT EIGHT MEETS District Number Eight of White Rock Baptist Church held its monthly meeting Sunday, July 16th at 5 o’clock with and Mrs. Waverly Page, 1502 Lincoln Street. The meeting was opened with idevotionals led by the presi dent, Mrs. Addie Torrence. The lesson was taken from the “Secret Place,” subject: “The Judge And The Boy.” Scrip ture lesson 2 Corinthiaiis 12 5-14 was read by Mrs. Page. The lesson was beautifully discussed. Those present were: Mes- dames Ellen Laim, Mary Lowe, Minerva Bradshaw, Lena Gates, Nora Thorpe, Mildred Page, Susie Alston, Addie Torrence, Jaunita Page, Karey Battle, F. K. Watkins. Mrs. Page served a delectablt; repast, which was enjoyed by all. MRS. ERWIN JONES HOSTESS On Sunday, July 16th, _the Friendly Circle Club of Saint Mark A. M. E. Zion Church met with Mr. and Mrs. Jlrwin Jones. The meeting was opened by sing ing, “Am I A Soldier Of The Cross,” led by Miss Eva Satter- white. Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Helen McNeil, followed with prayer by Mrs.' Dollie John son. Members present were: Miss Eva Satterw'hite, Mesdames Sarah Cameron, Helen McNeil, Ethel Williams, Dollie Johnson, Lottie Crockran, Odessa Alex- ’ ander, Carrie Grant ,Juanita Bames and Fannie Green, Grov er C. Burthey. Visitors were Mrs. Hattie Lewis of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Robert White, Mr. and Mrs. David Harris, Mrs. Lizzie Rigsbee anti Mr. and Mrs. Ar- thus Skinner. The club added three mem bers to its roll, they were: Mrs. Docia Skinner, Mrs. Rebecca Jackson and Airs. Lillian Bass. Members of the club toured the lovely new home of Mr. and Mrs. Jones. At the close of the meeting, the hostess served a very delicious two course din ner. Everyone left declaring Mrs. Jones a perfect hostess. Mrs. Catherine Russell, Chris tine Garner and Miss anie B. Rice were unable to attend the meeting. After the meeting, delicious refreshments were served. MRS. FUNDERBURG TALKS TO MODEL MOTHERS The Model Mothers Club met at the home of Mrs. Theola Mar tin on Otis Street, Thursday evenii^, July 13. The meeting was presided over by the presi dent, Mrs. Frances Schooler. Guest speaker for the eve ning was Mrs. Rosemary F un derburg, who gave a demon stration on case work, which was enjoyed by all. Members present were: Mes dames Nellie Toole, Althea Holmes, Gladys McKinnie, Reba Spaulding, Adelie Morris, Miu- nie Gilmer, Frances Schooler, Bessie McLaurin, Lena Richard son, Banetta Peale, Anna Thorn- Iton, Naomi Thorpe, Esther Baldwin, Roxie Rowland, Nel lie Gilyard, Virginia Alston and Marion Alston. Johny ilenry Cates aira daughter, Carolyn have returned to their home in New Haven, Conn. after spend ing one week with Mr. Cates’ mother, Mrs. Jodieva Tapp While here they went to lia- leigh, Dunn and to visit his grandmother in imberlake. MRS. HERNDON VISITS CITY Mrs. W. R. Herndon passed through the city last week en- route to Columbia, S. C. to vis it her daughter and son in law, Sgt. Barnett and grandchildren. While in the city slie was the guest of her daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. II. Wade of Fayetteville Road. Mrs. Herndon is now making her home in New York City. Bennett, Jr., celebrated his tliird birthday, Sunday, July 16 with a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Farrington on B Street. Games were played in the yard. A delicious course of ice cream, cookies, mints, peanuts and birthday cake were served to the following guests:"Carolyn Allen, Bettye Jean Atwater, Billy Boy Boykins, Brenda Ben nett, Joyce Pete, Claudia Dock, Claudia Long, Claudia, Pinky, and Doris Prince. William and Edith Dock, Patricia and James Reaves, Jo seph Harold Thorpe, Francis Canal Trice, Larry Walker, his parents and a host of relatives. Many nice gifts were present ed Jessee Jr. and a good time was ha(d by all. The guests were given favors of birthday baskets and ballong. MRS. The meeting was pre sided over by the vice-president, Mrs. Mable Powell. LE FLEUR GARDENERS HEAR FROM STATE GROUP Mrs. Emma Cox of Pekoe St. was the charming hostess to Les Fleur Gardners on Monday eve ning, «hily 3rd. The home throughout carried lovely arrangements of cut flow ers coming from the hostesses OM'ii garden. The meeting was opened in the usual manner with president Mrs. Lyda Wray presiding. Mrs. Wray introduced Mrs. Roxie Davis, president of the Year Round Garden Club, who read a lettvr coming from the the president of the State Gar den Club, Mrs. Faithful. Mrs. Davis spoke in behalf of the annual State Gardner Club convention, which convened in Winston-Salem on Friday, July 14th. Mrs. Davis made such an in teresting and inspiring talk the group was more than glad to be come members of the Federated Convention. The president then aske)d fot reports from the vari ous committees. By-laws committee was ap pointed as follows: Miss Lizzie zie Cannady, chairman; Mrs. Naomia Thorpe, (younsuella Foreman, Georgia Writted and Mrs. Lucy Norwood, co-work- ers. Mrs. Evelyn Dudley gave a report from the meeting of the Year Garden Club, where sev eral of the Gardeners were guests of Airs. Lil Farrington on Pekoe Street. Mrs. Roxie Row land gave timely suggestions on the way they open their garden gate. Mrs. Hattie Meadows also brought to us how’ their club sisters were chosen. The very pleasant hospitality of the Year Rouivl Gardners were really enjoyable. At this point the hostess took charge where a delectable three course dinner was served. A social hour folloewd the service • of chatter and games. Graham of Win ston Salem conducted a week’s revival at Mount Calvary Bap tist Church at Bahama. Ellen Elaine and William Bowling, Jr. of Durham who had been visiting their grandparents ac companied him to Durham. Gra ham who is the pastor of West Durham Baptist aiul Mt. Cal vary Baptist Churches. EVENTFUL DAY A big day was held at Kyles Temple Church last Sunday when the Pastor, Rev. Cook preached such an inspiring ser mon at 11:00 A M. His theme was “Jesus, A Place Of Be RETURN FROM VACATION Mr. and Mrs. Macon Hester have returned to their home on Cornell Street after visiting relatives and friends in W’’ash- fuge.” At 3 p. m. we were very hap py to have as our special guests Professor Porter and Dr. Cook accompanied by the two Gospel Keys and their manager, John nie Myers all of New York City. The Gospel Keys are two ladies of a very sweet Personal ity one 66 and the other 74 years young. The couple have been singing together for 30 years and is said to be the oldest sing ers in the world. They are form erly of Augusta, Ga. This being their first trip to Durham they witnessed a very pleasant stay. At the 8 p. m. hour a contest was held between the Senior and Junior choirs of the church, where prizes were awarded the two organists, Mrs. Mattie Saunders and Mrs. Elevta Mon roe, presented by Rufus Sligh of Saint Mark A.
