SATUBDAT. JAN. 50, ItSl TBK JLDCA jam PAOB Nation Aroused Over Florida Bombing Protests To Murder Of NAACP Leader Flow In From Several Organizations Urges Action New York—C. B. Baldwin of the Progressive Party, today sent a wire to President Truman demanding the appointment of a special commission to investi gate the outbreak of violence in Florida which led in the bomb murder of Mr. Harry T. Moore, NAACP leader, at his home in Mins, Florida. Baldwin also demanded the firing of Attorney General Mc Grath and FBI Director Hoover for their failure to act in the series of outrages that led to the killing of Mr. Moore. Baldwin’s wire to the Presi dent follows: “The brutal murder of Mr Harry T. Moore, state coordina tor for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the violent destruc tion of his home at Mims, Flori da, is a direct result of the fail ure of your Department of Jus tice to prosecute the motmting violence against Negroes and Jews that has taken place in the state of Florida over the past few months. Nor would it have taken place if Congress bad pas. sed the anti-lynch legislation promised by both Democratic and Republican Parties. “It is obvious that state offi cials will simply go through the motions of investigating as they did after the barbarous slaying of Mr. Samuel Shepherd at the hands of the riieriff in whose custody he was. And It is now equally obvious that neither your Attorney General, Mr Mc Grath, nor your Director of the FBI, Mr. Hoover, is either com petent or wiUinrto 'make the necesar^^HVestigatlon and, carry thfoogh the prosecution of thos^ lesponsible. “If your own officials had stepped in resolutely alter the killing of Mr. Shepherd, or af ter the bombings of Negro and Jewish homes, the murder of Moore would not rave taken place. The Department of Jus tice and parlicularry the FBI now have the largest staff and persecute men and women for their political opinions. But the FBI does not seem to be able to spare the men to protect inno cent citizens from violations of their civil rights and murder. “Mr. President, we of the Pro gressive Party demand that you fire Mr. McGrath and Mr. Hoov. er for their reckless and wan ton failure to cat. On November 18, after the slaying of Mr. Shep ard, we urged you to appoint a commission of eminent citi zens. Negro and white, armed with sufficient powers to investi gate and prosecute the perpte- trators of these vicious crimes against the Negro people. The >»mtal murder of Mr. Moore now makes this action all the more urgent. "We also urge upon you that in your Annual Message on the State of the Union you demand the passage of the antl-lynch, ant-poll tax and FEPC legisla tion which both your party and the Republican Party have promised the" Negro people.” Union Aroused NEW YORK — Immediate ac tion in apprehending the guilty parties in the bomb-death of Florida Negro Leader, Harry T. Moore, has been demanded by Albert J. Ftizgerald, General President of the United Elec trical, Radio and Machine Work ers of America (UE). The tmion leader has wired Governor Warren demanding “immediate and complete in vestigation in the brutal murder” of the Negro leader. Mr. Fitz gerald added, “This investigation must lead to the apprehension and conviction of the guilty parties.” Text of the wire to Governor Warren follows: '‘We draumd tanmedUte and ccmplete InTCstigatlon In the bmtal murder of Negro Lead er Harry T. Moore, Florida Stat* Coordinator al Vut Na- tlonml Association for the Ad- ▼aneement of Colwed People. ni« BiHt lead t» the apprehension and convic tion of the gnilty parties. The murder of Moore is evidently part of a planned reign of ter ror which, in recent months, has seen the shooting of Wal ter Irvin, the slaying of Sam uel Sheperd, the bombings of Negro housing developments and Jewish synago^es. As Governor you have the power to end this reign of terror, restore law and order to the State and protect the lives and liberty of the minorities who contribute to your state’s wel fare/’"' Signed; ALBERT J. FITZGERALD General President, UE. Negro Trainmen NEW YORK — It was learn ed at the International Head quarters of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in New York City that A. Philip Ran dolph, International President, sent the following telegram to President Truman at Indpend- ence, Missouri, calling upon him to establish a commission of prominent and distinguished ditizens to investigate the law lessness and terrorism against Negroes and Jews and especially the lynching by bombing of the Negro leader, Harry T. Moore of Mims, Florida, on Christmas night because of the fight that he made against the murder of Negroes by white officials of the law. The telegram is as follows: Respectfully implore you to promptly appoint a Presidential commission of distinguished cit izens to comprehensively investi gate the lynching by bombing of Negro leader Harry T. Moore of Mims, Florida, on Christmas night. Such a commission should be charged with the responsi bility of exhaustively studying the present reign of terror in Florida against Negroes and Jews. My belief is a Presidential statement by you at this time of setting up such a commission and expressing your determination tn rid our country of this blot and disgrace upon its life and good name will have far-reaching ef fect in deterring future lawless ness and terrorism. It will put confidence and hopfi in the hearts of Negroes and Jew is in Florida in particular and the na tion in general that they may expect that their rights and life will not be trampled upon and taken away by any form of or ganized hoodlumnisita or the breakdown of the machinery of local justice. Seems clear to millions of Ne groes, Jews and other American citizens that the constituted Flor ida stj(.t9. authorities are incom petent to deal with the present emeregency. Moore was killed and his wife critically injured while he was performing in the noble demo cratic tradition of alerting his fellow Negro citizens to their re- responsibillties as citizens in a democratic nation. The manner of his death is a forceful and glaring evidence of the hold that cancerous, undemocratic ele ments have on the State of Flor ida. Lynching of Moore cannot go unchallenged without serious damage to the noble Amer ican democratic traditions both at home and abroad. Urge prompt and forthwith action by you to assure justice and to ef fectively disarm Communist pro paganda which will see the man ner of Moore’s death as another good chance to misrepresent the true United States of America which is shocked and chagrined at the latest Florida killing of an American Negro. N. C NAACP CHARLOTTE — KeUy M. Alexander, President, North Caroling Conference of NAACP Branches and member of the national board of the INTatlonal Association for the Advancement of Colored People said today” that “The Christmas night bombing of the home of Harry T. Moore, NAACP State Coordi nator, in Mims, Florida, which resulted in his death, wrecking his home and also seriously in' juring his wife will qpt in any way «elinquish the work of the NAACP throughout the South. The legal programs against social and civil wrongs, political injustice, discriminatory and segregative practices will be re doubled with a stronger deter mination to win for all Ameri cans equality and justice. NA ACP leaders and state organi zation in the south will not be intimidated by acts of violence that are weakening oior demo cratic way of life and making mockery of the Bil of Rights, Constitution of the United States States and the United Nations Charter of Human Rights. These old methods used to frighten the Negro people in the South are obsolete. The South must realize that the old Social Order is passing away, and a new Social Order is being born, and it is the task of every true American to see that the new- one is better than the old, that it is a genuine democracy. “We call on you to use all the great powers of your office to bring the perpetrators of this foul murder, the slayer of Sam uel Shepherd, and the Miami Temple bombers to justice. The people of this country are de termined that life and liberty be fully protected in Florida, even if it requires all the sources of the National Govern ment to do it”. Carey’s wirfe to the Congress ional leaders: “We demand that you insti tute at once in Congress such investigative and punitive inea- sures as will bring to justice the murderer of Harry T. Moore in Florida. It seems quite evi dent i nthis and in other sim ilar incidents in that state that many American citizens are outside the protection of the law. “The failure of Congress to act on this whole question of civil rights in this and other recent sessions is a contributing cause to these outbursts of vi olence in Florida. Your inaction apparently has been interpreted by certain public officials and public enemies in Florida as a license to hold the lives and rights of people in low regard.” CIO Protests Washington, D. C.—Demands for quick action to prosecute the perpetrators of a series of violent attacks on members of minority groups in the state of Florida, which culminated in the murder of Harry T. &|oore of Mims, Florida, was demand ed by the CIO this week. CIO Secretary - Treasurer James B. Carey, who heads the organizatTons^^ Committee to Abolish Discrimination, called for immediate investigations by the federal and state govern ment, and for Congressional action to strengthen civil rights legislation. Carey sent telegrams to Pj*es- ident Harry S. Truman, Gover nor Fuller Warren of Florida and four members of Congress: Senator Ernest W. McFarland (D. Ariz.); Senator Robert A. Taft (R. O.); Representative John W. McCormack (D. Mass) and Representative Joseph W. Martin - (R. Mass.). Carey’s wire to the-President r “We strongly urge you to in sist that the federal government take action to run down the murderer of Harry T. Moore Florida and to call upon Congress to enact legislation that will put an end to the series of violent outrages against in dividuals and minority groups that have disgraced the country in recent weeks. In the meantime we ask you to direct the Attor ney General to use all the fa cilities at his commaitd to re store law and order, in Florida. The people of the nation will back you to the limit in these endeavors.” Carey’s wire to Governor Warren: “The lawless outrage that has taken the life of Harry T.'Moorg end maimed his wife has shocked all decent people. This brutal incident and other recent mur ders, bombings and assaults threatpn to make law and order In your state a tragic farce. They constitute an affront to the decent people who live in your state or visit it. It is idle for you to talk about investiga tion through local law enforce ment machinery when the na tion knows that it does not func tion adequately in you. state. "FIDDLING" WITH PERSONAL PREJUDICES (Continued from Page Two) dismissal must indeed be among the most puny, miserable wretches breathing. They are so narrow and bigoted that, even though the .country hovers on the brink of a ter rifying war, they must still discriminate a- mong those who are called on to give their last full measure. They are fiddling with their personal prejudices while any day Washington may be burning.
