Person School Observes Vocational Opportunity Week; Students Place In Speaking Contest Couple To Be Wed On 'Bride And Groom' TV Program GREENSBORO A couple whose romance be gan on the A and T College cam pus back in 1945, withstood months of separation by a call of the United States Army, and other hardships along the way will have their dreams come true when they take the vows of matrimony on “Bride and Groom", a CBS Television pro gram on Wednesday, noon, April 22. The principals are Miss Rubye E. Troxler, a Greensboro native, a stenographer in the treasur er’s office at A and T College who graduated from the institu tion in 1948 and Leslie J. Da vis, of Oxford, who completed two years of agricultural train ing at the college in 1946. Miss Troxler, the daughter of T. Albert Troxler, was a stu dent leader at the college. Be sides graduating with “Highest Honor” with a Bachelor of Sci ence degreee in Commercial Education, she entered the col lege on a scholarship given by the local Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and during her collegi ate days held memberships in: The Richardson B. Harrison Players, Intercollegiate ‘ Drama tic Association and the Alpha Kappa Mu National Honorary Society. After working for several ■ years in landscaping, Davis was drafted in the Army in March 1951. He received his discharge this month. As participants in the “Bride and Groom” wedding ceremony they will receive among other things, an all expense Wieadlng including rings for both, flowers, music and even the minister’s fee. In addition, manV house hold giftis and a lull weeks' honeymoon trip including trans portation to a famous hotel re sort, will be given. The program consisted of a series of lectures to students on Vocations and Opportunities. The first lecture was deliver ed by C. R. Rivers, an employee of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, of Durham. Mrs. Lucy V. Lee, local beauti cian, lectured to the senior class group calling attention to the many local vocational opportu nities with emphasis on prepara tion. , Mr. Corbitt, Director of Pub lic Relations, A. and T. College, Greensboro, lectured to the stu dents emphasizing the need for interest in and preparation for such vocations as engineering, nursing and other fields in which there has been only a previous negligent racial interest. Mr. Twitted, registrar of J. C. Smith’s College, Charlotte, spoke t6 students emphasizing the need for training ai)d effi cient service. Rev. J. W. McCullSn, Ben nett College, Greensboro, spoke to pupils and teacherson Religi ous Vocational Opportunities. Miss Marilyn Walker, Miss Essie Taylor and Miss Naomi Thompson participated in the District Agricultural -Marketing Essay Contest at Raleigh. Person Student Wins Contest ROXBORO On Tuesday, March j 17, Beta Phi and Tau Psi Chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity spon sored their annual Talent Hunt at Hillside High School, Dur ham. Bessie Smith, a sophomore represented Person County High School by singing “Smoke Gets In Your Eye?”, and won first pldce. The prize was twenty-five dollars with a chance to com pete in the District Talent Hunt which will be held in Columbia, South Carolina during the month of April. All expenses of the trip will be paid by the fraternity. Bessie was accom panied by Miss D. L. Malone, Music t,eacher at the High School. Professor James H. Wood of the Department of Music, Duke University was judge for the affair. Allene Jefferies,-senior at the Person County High School was one of the contestants for “Queen of The Jabberwock’’ which was sponsored by Alpha Zeta Sigma Chapter Delta Theta Sorority, held in Memorial Au ditorium, Raleigh. She received third place among the corttes- tants for queen. Allene was sponsored by Miss D. L. Malone, a member of the organization. M. Kennedy, Jr., professor of Air Science and Tactics at A. and T. College. Cadet Duncan’s class will be the first AFROTC class ever to graduate from A. and *T. and is expected next Jime, with a high percentage slated to go to pilot school. Duncan is a native of Cin cinnati, Ohio, where he attended Withrow High School and play ed four years of football and track from 1945-1949. Majoring in Sociology with a minor in Air Science here at A. and T., he participated in such student or ganizations as: Cadet Officers Club and the Arnold Air So ciety. Mays, presi dent of Morehouse College, At lanta, Ga., will be guest speaker at Bennett vesper services here March 29 at 4 p.m. Services will be held in the Anaie Pfeiffer Chapel on the Bennett Campus. Dr. Mays, who has been presi dent at Morehouse since 1940, is a native of South Carolina. He received an A. B. Degree at Bates College, Lewsiton, Me.; and his M. A. and Ph.D. degree at the University of Chicago.
