The all-engraved pieces were pre sented by the Coca-Cola Com pany through its public relations counselor, Moss H. Kendrix of Washington, D. C. COMMISSION UPHOLDS OUSTER OF TWO ASHEVILLE POUCEMEH ASHEVILLE The City Council last week by a vote of 4 to 1 upheld the action of the new Civil Service Commission which had earlier decided that J. F. Ledwell and C. A. Lanning were not mem bers of the city police depart ment. The ex-officers had been dis missed from the department by Chief of Police C. C. WaddeU last January S for their part in the assault committed on Mr. Joseph Edgerton, local citizen, last December 28. Chief Wad dell’s dismissal action was up held by the Civil Service Com mission which at the time was acting under the provisions of the .1947 Civil Service Act. The officers appealed their dismissal to the Superior Court, where Judge W. K. McLean ruled the dismissal action of the Chief Waddell and the’Civil Ser vice Commission as unwarranted and unjustified on the basis of the record of evidence as heard before the commission. Judge McLean’s decision re sulted in the men being put back to work on May 1, al though the decision did not spe cifically so order. Announcement was mw from Durham this week that Mrs. A. V. Higgins, above, is retiring after thirty five years of teaching in the elementary schools of Louisiana. Mother of Rev. Nelson Higgins of Durham, who is a member of the Hillside high school faculty, Mrs. Hig gins has taught for the past fif teen-years at the Zachary junior high school at Zachary, La. NEW FEATURE AT YWCA ASHEVILLE A new activity has been added to the program of acti vities at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. On the 2nd and 4th Thurs days of each month begin ning at 9 p. M. Young Adult Co-ed Night will be held, sponsored by the Young Adult Inter-Club Council. The program of recreation will include games and danc ing. Mrs. Anna Joe Baird is president of the sponsoring council group. ELKS GREET LEADER ON HIS BIRTHDAY PHILADELPHIA Elks from all sections of the nation came to Philadelphia last week to honor Robert H. John son, IBPOE of the World grand exalted ruler, who celebrated his 59th birthday, May 27. A gala celebration noting the “Grand’s” anniversary was held at this city’s O. V. Catto Lodge No. 20, which at the same time observed jte 50th anniversary, high-ranking Elk leader, Herb Johnson was exhalted ruler of the Philadelphia lodge at the time of his election to succeed J. Finley Wilson, late head of the Elk movement. The birthday observance, which took on portions of a little Grand Lodge, was promot ed by Mrs. Jean Clore Jones, Washington, D. C., business woman, who is directress of the newly created Elk- department of promotions and the wife of Ex-GI's Plan Get Together In Kansas City A Reunion is planned in Kah- sas City on August 10-20-21 (1953) for the former members of the Third Signal Troop of the Second Cavalry Division and Company “B” of the 43rd Sig nal Heavy Construction Battal ion, according to the Chairman of the Committee on Reunion, Fred M. Strait. This committee, made up of former members of these organi zations, have proposed to have an elaborate program for their former comrades. The Third Signal Troop was stationed at Fort Clark Texas in 1943-44. Following the inactivation of the second Cavalry Division, the Third Signal Troopers were transferred to Camp Crowder Missouri, where they became Company “B” of the 43rd Sig nal Heavy Construction Bat talion. This unit spent 18 months in Scotland, England, France, Bel gium, Luxemburg anjd Ger many. These men received four Campaign Stars for their honor able service. These stars were for the Battles of Northern France, The Adennes, Rhine' land and Central Europe. Many of the men were from Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, The District of Columbia and Illinois. The Committtee on Reunion is composed of Fred M. Strait, chairman; William R. ’Tripplett, vice chairman; Pierce P. Vallier, sec.; Walter D. Alford, treas.; Edmond Cohee, Oscar True, William S. Greene, Cecil B, Gan-i dy, Adolph Roulette Jr., Joseph Daniels and Earl Harrte Jr. This committee is making every effort to contact their for mer comrades. The responses that have been received have shown intense interest. Though many letters with old addresses have been returned, it is hoped that all former members will get in touch with the committee immediately so that plans for the Reunion may be completed. They are aware that plans to at tend must be made far in ad vance and they have a list of correct addresses and names to mall to all former members who write. Thomas Williams of Jones, grand organizer. In addition to a beautiful huge birthday cake, donated by the host lodge, Johnson re^ived gifts from all comers of the do main of Elkdom.
