The departure of Miss Ruth Rush for Atlanta, Georgia where she will assume new duties as dean at Spelman College in September will leave the State minus one of its most well-known and highly regarded women. Perhaps two of the most eminent of the State’s lady citlsens are shown in the photo above, taken in May, 1952 when the North Carolina Federation of Wo men’s Clubs honored Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown (left), retired North Carolina educator. Miss Rush, then president of the Federation, is seen presenting a gift to Dr. Brown. Daughters Of Dorcas Club Fetes President, Ruth Rush With Party The Daughters of Dorcas Club staged a lovely “Surprise Party” for its president—Miss Ruth G. Rush—on the beautiful garden lawn of Mrs. Effie Cotton—708 CarroU St., Friday evening, July! 24. Although “stunned” when news came that “Dorcas Club’' would be deprived of the pre sence of i*s president everyone “joined hmds” in planning a fitting way to assure her of the love and esteem in which she is held by its members. The idea' was uniquely carried out—Vice Pres., Mrs. G. Hubbard, invited her to a “long delayed dinner” which turned out to be “a plea sant auto ride” arotmd the city, finally ushering her into Mrs. Cotton’s lovely, soft-lighted, green and flowered garden where were gathered the “Dor cas Sisters” with the “Junior Dorcas Club” as guests. Know-, ing “Ruth Rush” as one does it was not easy to believe she could be so “taken in” but the “trick” worked and proved (though the parting is most re- gretable) to be a very happy oc casion. Out under the clear, moonlit Skies there was a soul satisfying X^nijjy that made one forget all that could disturb one—and cheery voices mingled in plea sant conversations—pushing afai} as long as possible the cause that had brought us together. Beautiful “Daughters of Dor cas” Club song rang out clear and sweet--always bespeaking the Club’s purpose—^Love and Cheer for others. The special committees head ed by Mrs. L, V. Merrick and Mrs. Effie Cotton had every ar rangement complete. A hand-* some, gold, stone-set, heartn shaped broach, selected by Mrs. Merrick’s conunlttee, was pre sented to Miss Rush in touc^g well fitted words by Vice-Presi- dent Hubbard. Mrs. Ava Leach read a most interesting original “Will and Testament” to Miss Rush wish ing every possible blessing-she’d signed, in portions, the Club’s Roster. The Junior Dorcas Club's ex pression of esteem and best wish es was read by Secretary Con-^ stance Young. Miss Ru^ was almost “overcome” by this de monstration of affections—but expressed in most tender and ex pressive terms her unbounded interest and devotion for “Dor cas Club” and her love for each and every member saying she knew the nature-puirpose of “Dorcas Club”-lts high ideals for giving its best for Others-and she’d always want to be associa ted—in fact, she asserted she’d “never give up her member ship”. At this point all gathered around and partook, bountifully of the delicious fruit punch, de lightfully cold. A gorgeous punch bowl held this placed on a lovely lace cloth coveredi table—cookies added. Pleasant mingling kept all lingering and it was hard to say “Good Night” Mrs. Cotton (and her com mittee') was thanked over and over for so pleasant an evening. Miss Ruth Rush had been (among others) a “Right hand” to our beloved late president—i Mrs. C. S. Moore-and when 16 became necessary, she was unanimously rieeted president. She has given meritorious ser vices and congenial companion-i ship always giving her best In guiding wisely in the Interest of all. She will be greatly missed! I and she carries with her the highest regard, prayers and best wishes for continued success and happiness always. Ebenezer Baptist Church 1410 GLENN STREET Rev. j. A.
