BETTIE FOWLER ENTERTAINS COSMETOLOGY CLUB The first Fall meeting of the Cosmetology Club Chapter One was held Monday. September 21. at the home of Mrs. Bettie Fowler, 807 Pine Street. The meeting was opened with the usual procedure. The vice-president, Miss Sadie Fitts presided over the business session. Reports of the mid year meeting were given by Mrs. Lossie Coleman and Mrs. N. J. Curry. One new member. Miss Lela Wise, was wel comed in the club. At the close of the business session, the hostess served a delicious repast to the following; Mesdames P. F. Love, E. Pugh, L. Coleman, P. Hart, M. Minor, G. Washington, E. Brown, L. Johnson, M. Jefferies, E. Owens, M. Blount, N. J. Curryi Missees S. Dotson, L. Borroughs, L. Wells, L. Wise and M. McCloud. A good time was had by all after a long vacation period. MR. JOYNER, SR. IMPROVING Mr. Pete Joyner, Sr. is improving at Lincoln Hospital where he under went surgery. We hope for him a speedy recovery. MRS. ELNORA SMITHllOSTESS TO LYON PARK ROSE GARDEN CLUB Mrs. Elnora Smith was hostess to the Lyon Park Rose Garden Club Monday evening, September 28 at her home on Nelson Street. The home was really beautiful through out, decorated with arrangements of assorted fall flowers that lent a festive touch to thejxicasion. , The meeting was opened by singing the club song, “God Bless the Little Roses,” which was followed by Bible verses. The “Lord Prayer” was then repeated in unison. In the ab sence of the president, Mrs. Alice Jones, the meeting was presided over by Mrs. M. W. Webb, vice-president. Com mittee reports were given and received. The program chair man, Mrs. Notie J. Curry gave a beautiful illustration on the care and planting of winter gardens. Plans were dis cussed for a club project. The group also voted to put shrub bery around the Saint Matthew C. M. E. Church. Following the business seession, a social hour was held. Games were directed by Mrs. Thelma Allen and Mrs. Elnora Smith. Prizes were awarded the winners. At this point, the hostess invited the group into the dining room where a turkey dinner was served with all the trinunings, to all members and friends present. Invited guests were: Mesdames C. C. Malonfc, Rada Prince, Ethel Perry, Evelyn Thorpe, Elnora Joyner, Annie Strickland, Grace Williams, Beatrice Manley, Annie B. Sanabria, E. D. Green and Miss Mary L. Stephens. Members present were: Mesdames Sadie Mebane, Daisy Green, Alliner Randall, Pearl Brown, M. W. Webb, Notie J. Curry, Margaret Burnett, Ora Rich, Elizabeth Bullock, Mary Handy, Elnora Smith, Mable Freeland, Victoria Joyner, Effie Young, Allene Mebane, Thelma Allen, Elizabeth Hester and Mattie R. Canty. Mrs. Sadi? Mebane thanked the hostess for such a grand time. MRS. MARYLAND McCOLLUM ENTERTAINS' AZALEA GARDEN CLUB The Azalea Garden Club met with Mrs. Maryland Mc Collum on Nelson Street, September 28, at 6:30 p. m. The Garden Gate was opened by Mrs. D. F. Reed, after which the President, MA. Effie Cotton presided. Minutes were read and approved. Several reports were made. The group had Mrs. C. B. Nixon, Home Demonstrator as guest speaker. Hagel To Address Ushers DURHAM Rev. O. A. Hagel of Burling ton will deliver the key address as the Durham Ushers Union holds its usual monthly meeting Sunday, October 11, at the Con gregational Christian Church on Beamon avenue. The program is set for 3:15 in the afternoon. Special music for the pro gram will be furnished by the senior choir of the church. Other participants on the program are Misses Erma Kinsey, Zelma Williams and Berlina Bullock. Rev. Hagel serves as pastor for the Congregatibnal Chris tian church on Beamon avenue. More Donations To PTA's Organ Fund Listed A message of thanks “and deep appreciation” for support of the Hillside P.T.A. in its fund campaign to complete pay ments on the recent purchase of an organ for the hi^ school was released this week by L. B. Frasier^ {secretary of the Parent Teachers Association of the school. Frasier also listed three more contributors to the fund cam paign. They were the class of 1953, $208.36; class of 1954 $25.00; and the Honor Society, $50. In his message, Frasier said, “The contributions typify the spirit of loyalty and genero sity existing among students at Hillside high school. The organ has been purchased for them, and we hope that it will be used to the fullest extent in helping to round out their program of development.” Plans Laid forNAACPV Contest Drive DURHAM A popularity contest to choose the NAACP Queen is heading toward its climax in Durham as spokesmen for the Durham branch, which sponsors the con test, announced plans for a pro gram to culminate the contest on Oct. 18. J. R. Meers and Singleton Jackson, managers of the con^ test, said last week that a spe cial program has been scheduled for Page’s Auditorium on Sun day afternoon at three during which the winner of the NAACP Queen title will be announced. Also ^uring this program, the Durham branch will hold its regular monthly meeting, and attorney C. O. Pearson and John Holloway, officials- of the Dur ham NAACP, will be heard in addresses. Special mu^ic for the program will be rendered by the Amey Jubilee chorus and the Community chorus. Contestants for the NAACP Queen title so far are Mrs. Lil lian Herndon, j^s. Ruth Meers, Mrs. Sadie Alford, Miss Doris James and Mrs. Sylvester Cain. home; so club members showered her with many useful household gifts. Phyllis Jeffers has returned home after a very pleasant visit in New York with her grand mother. “Pat and "Mart” Goins left Sunday morning with their mother and dad for their home in Baltimore, Md. Play school will miss them very much. The Whitted School Brownie Troop No. 38 will open October 14, 1953. They will elect new officers. Ages are from seven to nine. More children are wanted to join the Dramatic Club at the Recreation Center.
