LeKoy R. Russell presents the
13th Annual Song Festival and
Quartest Contest, Sunday May
16, 2:p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
A great musical extravagaiiza.
A special guest artist, Louis
Watts, age id of Lexington, Va.
A junior at Lyburm Downing
High School he plays the bass
drum in the band, makes better
than average grades, “pitches”
sdftball and is active in other
sports.
That’s nothing unusual for a
high school boy except that
Louis Watts has no arms. Louis,
18, was born without them. The
growth of tissue stopped at the
shoulders. But he has never “felt
sorry” for himself, determining
a long time ago to live as near
normal as possible.
GETS A TOE HOLD
His legs and feet have been
trained to perform the many
tasks necessary to daily living
that a normal boy does with his
hands and arms. “He can write
better than I, say, his principal,
U. B. Broadneaux.” In fact, he
is one of the highest-standing
pupils in the junior class.” Louis
writes by gripping a pencil or
pen between his great toe and
the one next to it on his right
foot. He holds the paper steady
with his left foot.
In addition to writing (Flaw
lessly) in “Longhand” he has
become quite good at lettering
and prepares posters advertising
games of hii junior league soft
ball team, the “Wildcats.” He
also does sign painting.
BATS WITH HIS FOOt “^
He pitches occasionally for
the softball team. When on the
mound he must ease the toe on
his right foot under the ball,
balance it on the top of his loot
and whip it toward the batter.
Last sumemr, he missed a shut
out by just one run. The pre
vious summer he pitched two
no hit games. Bats with his foot,
cleans his teeth, pitches horse
shoes, sings in church choir, and
school glee club, has his radio
j” c!i,_ j™. •>' show, has a lovely voice. Louis Is
Lights and Shadows. .. . ,'
active in several other sports be
sides softball. He has served as
extra point kicker lor the foot
ball team. He liopes to go to col
lege to coiTtinu« his musical
Lidining upon graduation at the
i^exmgion school. Louis agrees
uiai 11 a lul more people had his
ouliooK. 'on me ‘ tney would be
oeiier off.”
Louis is a “WONDSBFUL
lioy.”
