Mary Fields Carr of Central Sute College, Wilber- force Ohio has returned home after spending the Easter holi days in Durham. She was kept quite busy trying to see all her many friends here. Her vitations were too numerous to mention. She could not fulfill half of them. Mrs. Carr was connected with the N. C. Mutual here for seve ral years before going to Ohio. While in the city she was the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Logan, Sr., Miss Geneva Me- bane, Mrs. Omega Livingstone and Mrs: Laura Bruce. Mrs. Mary Gattis and son George (Butch) have returned to their home in Baltimore, Md. after spending a week here visi ting her mother, Mrs. Ora Bar nette on Dowd St., and other relative and friends. Miss Geraldine Williams spent the Easter holiday in the city with her mother, Mrs. A1 ma Williams at her home on Dunbar St. Geraldine is a stu dent at Miner Teachers College, Washington^ D. C. Mrs. C. Ruth EMwards has returned, home after spending the week-end in New Port News and Portsmouth, Virginia, visi ting her sister Mrs, Sara Nor- mat and Mrs. Laura Oliott. Mrs. Mabel Mabry’s house guests for the Easter holiday were her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Robert • Simmons of Columbia, S. C. Also Mrs. Ma bry's daughter, Corene who is a student at New York Univer sity taking Physical Therapy. On Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Boyd and son Ed ward Royal, Mrs. Chat Rivera, Mrs. Lillian Buchanan, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Rivera and mother, Mrs. C. Ruth Edwards, toiotored to Oxford, N. C. to visit with Mrs. Malissa Dillard, in the home of Mr. Boyds’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Boyd on Gran ville St. Mrs. Dillard has been connected with St. Agnes Hos pital in Raleigh for a number of years. She is now leaving for Gary, Ind. to make her home there with her two daughters. She was accompanied to Indiana by her daughter Montrose and two dflfcncc Henry snd - lie of New York City. M., CoUier, Sr. Mrs. Clara Burton Lilly of Washington, D. C., spent the Easter holidays in Durham visi ting her aunt. Miss Lillian Bur ton of Fayetteville St. Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Mack of Hyde Park, N. Y. and Mrs. Sa die Lawson of N. Y. City have returned home after spending the Easter holidays here with Mrs. Macks parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Holloway on Eliza beth St. They were shown many courtesies while here. Mrs. Mack is the former Miss Doris Holloway. Miss Sallie E. Whitted and sister Mrs. Eva Goins have re turned home from Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Goins spent the Blaster holidays there with her child ren the Arthur Goins family and Elwood Goins. Miss Whitt ed spent two weeks there visit ing them. ’Hiey motored home and were accompanied by El wood who spent the week-end here. Mr. and Mrs. Carter C. Smith in of Washington, D. C. spent the Easter holidays in Durham with their parents, Mr. and Mrs.’ C. C. Having charge of the devotion she showed pictures on keeping up with the Easter season, read scripture that explained each scene and prayed a most inspiring and touching prayer. Mrs. Gladys Rhodes, our pre sident, had charge of a short business session, after which Miss Carter showed pictures of flower gardens she had taken here and other sections of the country where she has traveled. While enjoying the beautiful gardens, refreshments were served. ■ Members present were: Mes- dames Gladys Rhodes, Nellie Toole, Minerva Evans, Evelyn Duuley, Gladys Swift, Hazeline Wilson, Lizzie Camiady, Elea nor Lloyd, Mozella McLaughlin, and Miss Nezzie Carter, and Mrs. Carter were guest. Mrs. Cannady thanked the hostesses on behalf of the group for an enjoyable evening. The club anjoumed to meet with Mrs. Wilson on Fayetteville Road May 3. Dist 12 of White Rock Bap' tist Church held its regular meeting on April 18 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Thomp son on Glenn St. with 16 mem bers present. The meeting was opened in the usual manner. The Secret Place was read by Mrs. Mattie Ferguson and en larged on by the group. After the completion of business we were served refreshments af ter which we adjourned to meet May 16 at the home of Mrs. Rosetta Southerland with Mrs. Lela Walker acting as hostess. The Jack and Jill nursery School located at 1125 Crest St. is ftow officially open for busi ness. This school cares for chil dren of all ages. Transportation if desired all for a small sum. The Floral Club of Ebenezer Baptist Church held its monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Zelma Adams Sunday April 25 at 4 P.M. Those present were the Hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Adams, Mesdames Jessie Oneal, Della Hubbard, Mattie Hollo way, Annabelle Corrick, Mattie Holloway, Addie Barbee, Mattie Brown, Helen Battle, Mildred Thorpe, Addie Smith, Corine McCasbell, Eceleen Josey and Helen Lash. The hostess served honiie made ice cream with plain cake as refreshment. A birthday gift for Mrs. Raney Power who is sick was a special feature of the meeting. Love presided over the business session. Mrs. Lucy Johnson was elected delegate to attend the N. C. Beauticians Association in Rocky Mount Aprill 25-2S. Among those who will attend the National Convention at New York are Mrs. Beatrice Moss and Mrs. Margaret Minor. Mrs. Minor will also join the group to Paris. Miss Florida Fisher, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Miles Mark FisKer, has completed require ments for the bachelor of arts degree at Denison University, Granville, Ohio, where she ma jored in history. A 1949 graduate of Hillside Park High School, she com pleted residence requirements last June. She may return to participate in the annual com mencement exercises with the Class of 1954 June 14. Dancing and games were fea tured. The highlight of the ev ening was the service, which was Dagwood sandwhiches. All the ingredients were provided and the guests made their own. A prize was offered to the one who made the largest sandwich and ate it. Donnie McNeil won the prize. The 2-1 Class of Lyon Park School whose teacher is Miss Annie Lee Cobb gave a very enjoyable Easter program in chapel Thursday. The program told about the Resurrection. The children were dressed in white and the stage was deco rated with three white crosses and dogwood blossoms. 2-2 Grade of Lyon Park School sent little Sylvia Webb an Easter basket for Easter. They made cards wishing Syl via a happy Easter. Sylvia has been out of school since Christ mas because of illness. Miss M. L. Stephens is the teacher of this class. Julius Royster of West Petti grew Street was made to feel very happy for Easter when his former teacher, Mrs. Evelyn Kennedy, visited him and pre sented him with a large Easter basket. Julius ha? been out of school because of illness. The children of West Durham Baptist and First Calvary Sun day Schools enjoyed Egg Hunts given by their Sunday Schools Easter Monday. There were plenty of pretty colored eggs for everyone. "Billy Boy” Boykins of Du pree Street celebrated his sixth birthday on April 24 with about jixty of his friends. They all had a lovely time playing vol ley ball, basketball and many other games. The guests were served ice cream, cake, Easter eggs, and peanutts. “Billy Boy” received many gifts; among them was a swing which was a gift from his daddy. Elizabeth Tanner and Alice Douglas have been absent from Pearson School on account of illness. Gwendolyn Winston is in the hospital. Her brother “Bill” was also in the iiospital but left when she came In. The declamation contest for Pearson, School was held Mon day, April 12, and Tuesday A- pril 13. The winners of the up per grades’ contest were: First place, Hattie Pearl Perry; Sec ond place, Jiirmy Henry and Betty Jo Goodloe; Third place, Bobby Liverpool. The winners' of the Primary Grades’ contest were: First place, Wilma Sou therland; Second place. Third place, Doris Wall. The Happy Club met at the home of Marsha Goodwin Sat urday, April 24. The members played dodge ball, various games,' and jumped rope. Fli Backs were given' to all mem bers. Refreshments consisted of ice cream, cake, candy and marshmallows. The members of the 2 B 1 class of East End School are happy to have Eddie Cox return to school after having been a patient in Duke Hospital. The members of 1 B 1 Grade of East End School were happy to greet Eddie James when he returned to school after he had been in the hospital. The primary grades of East End School will present an ope retta, “Old King Cole,” Mon day night, May 3, at 8 P. M. The members of the 2 B 3 class of East End School regret that Levi McCrae is absent from school because of measels. Willie Harris who is attend ing school in Washing ton, D.
