Attorney Harry I. Wood, was
principal speaker at the thir
tieth anniversary of the Baraca
Class of the First Baptist
Church last Sunday after
noon. His discourse was cen
tered around 'Paul’s Letter to
the Phillipians. The speaker
said that he knew of no finer
expression of values nor any
better set of rules to live by
than those given by St. Paul in
his letter to the Phillipians. If
there be any virtue, if there be
any praise, think on .these
things. This ideal is the corner
stone of life and freedom. Tru
th lies in character. Honor
strengthens life. The speaker
said that the Christian should
always think justly. Purity of
thought will result in puHty of
action. Paul spoke of the beauty
of the character of brotherhood.
In this age of fear, cares, frus
tration, and moral' chaos the
young attorney said that a re
reading and searching study of
these salient truths will serve
as beacon light to^our perilous
paths.
The Pilgrim Lodge will cele
brate its forty-seventh anniver
sary on May 2, at the Pilgrim
Hall on Lee and Beauregard
Sts. The Rev. R. R. Hairston,
pastor of Hackberry Baptist
Church in Sutherlin, Va., and
his chorus will have charge of

The Danville Leafs Baseball
Club has two colored players
this year. They are Willie Kirk
land, a centerfielder, and Mar
shall Bridges, first base. Kirk
land is from Detroit and was
in the Giant organization last
year while plaj^fng for the
“Twins”. Bridges is from Jack
son. Miss,, and formerly played
for the Memphis Red Sox. The
Giants bought him as a pitcher
but converted him into a first
baseman. Kirkland likes basket
ball as a hobby and Bridges
fishing.

of Norfolk visited Mrs. Lula
Wells of Monroe St. over the
holidays.

Gets Doctorate
In Education
Tofessor Norman Johnson,
associate in the Audio-Visual
Aid Center at North- Carolina
College in Durham, recently re
ceived the Ed.D. degree at In
diana University. The NCC A-V
specialist received his degree in
educational psychology.
Dr. Johnson submitted a the
sis “An Analysis of Certain
Problems Involved in the Inte
gration of Negro and White
Schools”.
He is a native of Brazil, Ind.,
and received his undergraduate
training at Indiana State Teach
ers College. He also received
the masters degree pt Indiana
State Teachers College.
He is married to the former
Miss Pauline Hardin and is the
son of Mrs. Olga Jenkins, In
dianapolis, Ind., and Mr. Char
les Johnson, Beckley, West Va.
The Johnsons have two daugh
ters and reside at B-2 Mutual
Court in Durham.

Campaign Drive
DANVILLE, Va.
The Drum and Bugle Corps
of Waldon France Post 29
American Legion, has put into
the mail 3,500 letters and appli
cations to friends asking that
they join the corps as honorary
members, as a means of raising
funds to help carry on the work
of the corps. The membership
fee will be $1.00 per person per
year, and each memljer will be
sent a membership card.
Members will not be solicited
for further funds while they are
members, in good standing, they
will also be giv6n ten per cent
off on all trips with the corps.
Men, women and children are
eligible, there is no age limit.
Children over 12 may be pro
moted to active service with the
corps upon request without ex
tra payment. It is hoped that
