Colleges WASHINGTON, D. C. North Carolina A and T Col lege swept to its third straight ClAA tennis championship last Saturday as former national Negro intercollegiate champion, Julius ^Martin, won the singles title dnd teamed with John Lockett to oust Hampton Insti tute’s second-seeded doubles team in a two-hour final round match. The Greensboro school, which advanced both its singles play ers and doubles teams to the semi-finals in the three-day tournament, amassed 17 points Osmond S. Guy, Ethel Hamil ton, Lacy E. Headen, and Regis A. Hull. Loretta Lee Johnson, Clinton J. Jones, Eddie Lee Jones, Bet- tie Lewis, Annie Lowrie, Willi am G. Matthews, Mary Meach- em. Prunella E. Nelson, Caro lyn Norwood, Clarence E. Peo ples, Lucille C. Pittott, Eugene H. Preston, Wilfred C. j Roce, Linwood E. Rodgers, Grover H. Sanders, Ruth C. Skelton, Jo nah Smith, Leonard Waters, James W. White, James A. Wright and John Ziegler were aalso honored. to runner-up Howard Univer sity’s nine. Hampton (Va.) and Morgan State of Baltimore tied for third place in the 10-team competition with seven points. In the grueling 48-game doubles finals Martin and Lock ett came from behind to win over Eric Blake and Roosevelt Megginson of Hampton, 4-6,11- 9,10-8. The Hampton duo reach ed match point on two occas- sions only to be denied as the top-seeded Aggies rallied. Martin, a senior from Wil mington, N. C., won handily over teammate Lockett in the singles, 6-3,6-l. By virtue of his win Martin qualifies for the in tercollegiate championships, a tourney which he won in 1952. This year’s tourney will be played in August at Daytona Beach, Fla. Saturday’s matches determin ed the individual champions, but the team championship was clinched by A and T in the semi final round. In addition to the Martin-Lockett combination the Aggies’ second doubles team of Ed Wells and Vic Miller ad vanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated by Blake and N. C. Dr. ’ William J. Faulkner, pastor of the t^ongregationai Church of Park Manor, Chica go, 111., will preach the bacca laureate sermon Sunday after noon, at 3:30 p.m. William L. Shirer, noted radio commenta tor and journalist, will be the finals speaker at 11 a.m. Tues day, June 1. Baccalaureate Sund^ will feature the annual seifnon at 3:30 p.m., followed by the an nual reception for graduates, their friends parents and the faculty, given by President and Mrs. Alfonso Elder at their home. The music department’s special Commencement Recital will be presented at 8:15 p.m. in Duke Auditorium. Monday, May 31, has been set aside as Alumni Day. The an nual meeting Monday afternoon will be followed by the tradi tional banquet Monday night.
