TIMES SPORTS CORNER By E. COGGIN BRIDGES The Junior Tennis players of Durham are losing no getting in shape for the coining Southeastern Junior Tennis Tournament. Mrs. Whitted, chairman of the tournament I committee says, she is pleased with the interest that is being b'liown in the coming tournament. The tournament will be held Jul^O-24. Leon Crawford, coach of the defending champions, the “Tree Tops,” announced his starting line up; Gilbert Burton, first base, Cornelus Curtis, catcher; Ulysses. Martin, Jr., third base; Garfield Harris, Jr., centerfield; George Bell, leftfield, Wallace Miller, right field. The starting line up for the “Bee Bops” is as follows: Bennie Tatum, first base; Chester Ranson, second base Cal vin Allen, third base; Milton Jones, shortstop; Robert BeU, leftfield; Carol O’Neal, rightfield; Mack O’Neal, centerfield; Purcell Burton, catcher. The W. D. Hill Cherokees had their best week of the season in the Community Softball League. This past week they defeated all comers. The Durham Rams have an additional man on their mound staff. He is Lefty Coleman. Coleman turn down a contract of $450 a month offered him by a team in Canada, r Friends of Coleman say his reason was that he wanted to '■ stay at home this season with his wife and two children. The Durham Rams defeated the Statesville Eagles in South Boston, Virginia June 13,12-3. Coleman pitched a five hitter to capture the win. George Letlow hit a home run to spark the winners’ hitting attack. In an ex hibition game played at Lumberton Saturday night, the Rams defeated the Philadelphia Zulu Giants, 9-5. The same two clubs met again in Raleigh Monday night. The Rams loist 8-4. Saturday night, June 19, the locals will again tackle the Giants at the Durham Athletic Park. Game time is 8:10. Mrs. Wilson Hostess to Garden Club Mrs. Hazeline Wilson was hostess to the La Fleur Garden Club recently at her home on Fayetteville Rd. The living room was decorated with spring flowers which lent a fesive touch for the occasion. The meeting was opened with the Club Song, followed by memory verses and prayer by the president. After a short business session presided over by the president, Mrs. Gladys Rhodes, Mrs. Lucy Norwood in troduced a distinguished guest' of the evenlhg, Mrs. Isawa Tanaka, who brought interes ting points on the arrangements of flowers. Mrs. Rachel Beatty was honored by the New Bethel Mission group No II with a sur prise party last Thursday night at her home. A silver pitcher, and two drinking glasses were presented her. Refreshments were served following the pre sentation, Mrs. Beatty had ser ved as chairman of the group for seven years. Shepard, June 1, united in marriage Miss Berlie Ray, a French major fr6m North Carolina College and Ivan Dixon III, a dramatic ma jor of the College. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.
