The monthly meeting of the West Durham Garden Club was held Tuesday evening, June 15, at the home of Mrs. Iris Law rence on Fayetteville Street. The “Garden Gate” was opened by Mrs. Ruth Stephens. During the business session, summer flowers and a picnic to close the meetings for the summer were discussed. Refreshments were served following the discussion. After a jolly time with jokes, games and singing, refresh ments were served by Mrs. ■Florence Carter, assisted by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. A. Carter, Mr. Hyman received cards, money and other useful gifts. Scar borough, Sr. The Friendly Daughters Club of St. Joseph AME Church had its closing meeting last Tuesday night in the Educational Build ing, Room 6, with Mrs. Lois McCall as hostess. Mrs. Alma Hughes, president, presided over the meeting and gave the devotional message. Mrs. Gladys McNeal opened the garden gate with some very interesting points on the care of flowers and gardens. The president, Mrs. Effie Cot ton, presided over the meeting. Mrs. Banetta Peele, one of the delegates to the State Con-, vention whicj|» convened at Bricks, N. C., made a fine re port covering all of the sessions, bringing many new and helpful ideas. Mrs. Effie Cotton was also a delegate, both together made a made a complete report. The time spent at the convention was helpful, enjoyable and in spiring. A lovely menu was ser- .ved by the hostess. Mrs. Lottie Kimble of Boston, Mass., former house director at N. C. College, spent a few days in Durham visiting friends re cently. She was the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. The meeting featured the election of officers which are as follows: President, Margaret Evans; vice president, Joan Harris; Secretary, Alice Faye Vanhook; Acting secretary^ Juanita Bobbit; Treasurer, Gil bert Ettson; Chairman of Pro gram Committee, Hubert Mc Dowell. The next general meeting will be held Jyne 29 at the home of Mrs. A. M. Wilson. All Bragtown community 4-H Club members are asked to be pre sent at 2 p.m. The sewing group met Mon day, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 10 a. m. Grading group met at the home of Hubert McDo-- well June 22 at 2 p.m. Misses Viola and Maole Hole- man have gone to spend their summer vacation with their aunt in Roxboro. Paula Weeden of Lynchburg, Va., is visiting in Durham. Her mother attended the Jack and Jill Conference. Charles Alston, Jr., visited in Salisbury Saturday. While there he visited the Watch Making School. Jennifer Jean and Bennetta Olivia Engram of Tallahassee, Fla., are visiting their cousin, Noma Alyce Bennett of Mason- dale Avenue. Jennifer Jean and Benetta are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses T. Ben nett. Their mother was a dele gate to the Jack and Jill Confer ence which was held here. CONTEST WINNEIU-In the annual Baby Contest held at St. Mark’s A. M. E. Zion Church recently, little Myra Regina Covington, daughter of Mrs. Marian E. Covington, won first prize in the contest. Little Myra Regina also was awarded a crown which was placed on her head during the program. Second prize winner was Palmela J. Lenard, and Phiilippia Sears won third. After the business session, re freshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting will be at the home of Paul Biggers. Church Sunday School Sunday, June 13, as guest of Noma Alyce Bennett. Janice is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Moses Belton and the niece of Mrs. D. Otis Street. B. Martin of 2004 Joan Ridley and Janet Knight of Newport News, Va., spent the week end in Durham. They came with their mothers for the Jack and Jill Conference. On Sunday mornijag Joan and Janet visited White Rock Bap tist Church Sunday School with Betty Jo Goodloe. The friendly Circle Club On Sunday June 20, the Friendly Circle Club of St. Mark AME Church met with u Elizabeth -Bcow» 408 Cecil St. The meeting was opened by the president, Mrs. Odessa Alexander. Members present were Mes dames Annie Thompson, Lottie Cochran, Sara Cameron, Odessa Alexander, Elizabeth Brown and Guy Myzeck. After the business session, the hostess served a delicious two course dinner. Mrs. Guy My- zck thanked the hostess for her gracious hospitality toward the group. Her guests were Ina Fletcher, Le- Etta Smith, Jan and Jimmv Stewart, Clayton Wade, Janice Belton and Greer’s brother Geoffrey. They played games and had ice cream and cake. Re cently, Greer had her first plane ride when she went to Washing ton with her mother. The plane ride was very exciting, especi ally talking with the pilot. Miss Gwendolyn Talley Becomes Bride Of Mr. Harmon Smith Jr. The Bible Schools at West Durham Baptist and Mount Olive A. M. E. Zion Churches are doing fine. There will be one hiore week of school work and West Durham Baptist will have its closing program Friday night, while Mt. Olive’s closing program will be Sunday after noon, June 27. . Tfee Children of the West Durham Baptist Bible school were taken for a bus ride Fri day, June 18. A bus and five cars of the community took the children on a 12-mile sight-see- ing trip to the country. It was a very enjoyable trip. Two Girls To Attend Westminster Fellowship Assembly In Illinois OXFORD Miss Grace Davis, daughter of l)'r. and Mrs. H. S. Davis, and Miss Florence McCall, niece of Mrs. F. P. Wilson will be delegates for the State of North Carolina to the West minster Fellowship National Assembly meeting at the Uni versity of Illinois June 30-July 6. The North Carolina delegates will leave by chartered bus from Johnson C. Smith Univer sity in Charlotte. They will be among the 1,200 young persons and 500 adult leaders of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., who will spend the week in tian living in the world today. Outstanding program partici pants will be Dr. Leber, secre tary of the Board of Foreign Missions; Professor Alexander Miller, statesman from Virginia, and Dr. Joseph Gettys of Dallas, Texas. Miss McCall, fornier modera tor of the local Fellowship and at present, the vice-moderator of the Wesminster Foundation of North Carolina College, Dur ham, is being sent as a delegate from that Foundation. She is a junior at the college. Miss Davis, who is modera tor of the Wesminster Fellow ship of Timothy Darling Church and organist of Districts one and two of Cape Fear Presby tery, is being sent as a delegate from the Fellowship of these districts. ROXBORO In a lawn ceremony at 4 o’clock June 3, Miss Gwendolyn Gennette Talley of Roxboro be came the bride of Hannon Smith, Jr. of New London, N. C. The Rev. U. R. Booker, pastor of the bride, officiated at the double-ring rites assisted by the Rev. Gaylord of Raleigh, class mate of the groom. Miss Telley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Talley of Roxborp, and Mr. Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Her- mon Smith, Sr., of New London. Prior to the ceremony, Mrs. Mabel Dickens Morgan, pianist and Miss Bessie Nobia Smith played nuptial music. The vows were spoken before an arch decorated with ferns and two large arrangements of mixed gladioli. The hride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white lace and net over taffeta, featuring a fitted bodice, high lighted -with a scolopped neck line, puffed sleeves with match ing lace gloves. Her shoulder length veil of bridal illusion was attached to a crown of lace trimmed with seed pearls. She carried a white prayer book topped with a white orchid with satin streamers, stephanotis and lily of the valley. Maid of honor was MiSs Thomasina Talley sister of the bride. She wore a powder blue ankle-length gown of net over taffeta highlighted with ruffled satin panels. She carried a cas cade boucjuet of mixed gladioli with matcRing' satin ribbons. Bridesmaids wer^ Miss Ellen Lawrence, Mrs. Ernestine Tal ley, Mrs. Lillie M. Gentry, and Mrs. Roxie G. Morton all of Roxboro. They \Vore identical dresses of pale blue and yellow organdy and carried cascade bouquets of mixed gladioli with matching ribbons. Flower girls were Misses Tonya Talley of Washington, D. C., and Phyllis Umstead of Roxboro, both nie ces of the bride, i Best man was 1st Lt. Alton W. Powell of Apex, now sta tioned at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rica, also a classmate of the bride and groom. Ushers were Willie Mor gan and Carl Madison of Wash ington, D. C., Winard Talley, brother of the bride and Ted Gentry of Roxboro. Ring-bear- ers were Bernard and Russell Booker, nephews of the bride. For her daughter’s wedding, Mrs. Talley wore, a dress of rose pink lace, blaclc hat and match ing accessories. Mrs Smith,, •mother of the groom, wore a pale blue nylon lace dress with white accessories. Both wore corsages of white carnations. Immediately following the ceremony, the bride’s parents gave a reception on the lawn of their home. Mrs. Marie Talley, sister-in- law of the bride of Washington, D. C., was hostess assisted by Miss Mildred Ramsey of Sea board, classmate of the bride, Mrs. Georgia Talley, Mrs. Lu cille TaUey, Mrs. Bernice Book er and Mrs. Cleo Umstead, sisters-in-law and sisters of the bride. After the couple cut th« wed ding cake it was served by Mrs. Ralph Plummer of Washington, D. C., and Miss Annie M. Tuck of Roxboro. Serving punch were Mrs. Ruby T. Hester, sis ter of the bride and Miss Ida M. McCoy, both of Roxboro. Miss Margaret Nelson, cousin of the bride kept the register. For her wedding trip, the bride wore a beige linen suit with matching accessories. Mrs. Smith nepeived the B. S. Degree from Shaw University in 1952. She is a member of the faculty of Olive Hill Elemen tary School, Roxboro. Mr. Smith received the B. S. Degree from Shaw University in 1951.
