Camp Opens On
Fayetteville Rd.
Daisy E. Scarborough Girl
Scout Camp had its official
opening Monday, June 28, with
5ii girla of Durham present. The
camp v/ill accommodate 60
children. Ther^ is a cabin on the
three-acre site which is equip
ped with a large meeting room,
a screened porch, and kitchen.
Children attending the day
camp will leave their respective
homes each morning and return
each evening. Transportation to
and from the camping area is
also being provided for the
youngsters. Picnic tables and
benches are in use at the camp
for thj children’s lunch period.
A flag’ and flag pole have
been secured from the local
American Legion and the entire
site has been cleared of all un
derbrush so that the children
may have ample space for re
creational activities. Outdoor
cooking, nature hik^, artcraft,
and handicraft is being super
vised by the camp worker^.
. Two week sessioijis will be
held by the camp to acconmio-
date those who cannot attend
the first session. Persons in
terested in assisting with the
camping program shpuld make
their services known by con
tacting Mrs. Booker at the Girl

James L. Mitchell, Sunday,
June 27, with the pastor, the
Rev. E. T. Browne, officiating.
Mr. Mitchell died Thursday,
June 24. He was the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Willis Mit
chell of Granville County.

of the Tonkin's Bible Class of

the Durham Rams came from
behind a 2-0 lead to down the
Bluefield West Virginia Miners
Monday night 11-5. The visitor^
drew first blood in the first in
ning with two runs, but the lo
cal team roared back in their
half of the same frame to cop a
2-3 lead.
Going on a scoring rampage
thereafter, the Rams had men
to cross the home plate in the
second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and
eighth innings. Payton struck
out nine opposing batters while
the visiting pitciier. Little, set
down four Rams.
The game which was played
at Durham Athletic Park was
attended by one of the largest
number of spectators since the
season opened. Special attrac
tions of the evening were the
personal appearance of Jam-A-
Ditty of the local radio station,
and the awarding of the $5 gate
prize.
The fourth of July weekend
will find the Rams at home for
two games. Sunday afternoon,
they will play the Baltimore
Stars at the Durham Athletic
Park and Monday afternoon,
July 5, they will be hosts to
Greensboro. “Lefty” Coleman
will pitch for the game Sunday.
