Mrs. Saunders is a prominent social ite of Detroit and is employed in the Highland Park Division of the Ford Motor Company. Mrs. Saunders was lavishly en tertained by relatives and friends here. Among the party motoring down from Detroit were Mr. and Mrs. James D. Cobbs of Roanoke. The Danville Beauticians Club will observe its anniver sary on Sunday September 19, at 3:30 p. m., at the Loyal Bap tist Church. The speaker will be Mrs.^ Ruth Valentine of Nor folk. John W. Saunders Jr., of De troit has returned home to re sume his studies at Northern High School after spending the summer with his grandmother, Mrs. Beatrice Howard. Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Exalted Ruler Theodore Lips comb and his wife have return ed from a recent trip to Prince ton and Mt. Hope, West Va. They reported visiting many other places of interest. Miss Phyllis Ann Younger of Ringgold was given an elabo rate birthday party by her mother, Mrs. Sallie Younger, at their ancestral home, Selma Lane, on last Sunday afternoon. Vivian Martin SlOirCBSiunilay Vivian Martin, young dra matic soprano and recent win ner on Arthur Godfrey’s “Tal ent Scouts” program on CBS Radio and CBS Television, has been engaged as featured soloist for two programs on CBS Radio’s “The Music Room,” Sunday, Sept. 19 and 26. God frey said of her, “This is one of the finest voices I have ever heard.” Miss Martin will open her Sept. 19 program with “Ombra SFXURITY SAVINGS &I.OAN Mai Fu,” the famoiu largo from Handel’s "Xerxe«.” She will offer also three KngUfh songs, "Love Went a-Rlding" by Frank Bridge, "The Bird of tiie Wilderness” by Horseman and Scott’s “Think on Me." A native of Detroit, Miss Martin is a graduate of "Wayne University there, and has been teaching school in Detroit for the last three years. During 1933, she studied at the Fon tainebleau Conservatory in France and won the highest auara for singing at the famous musical center. She has sung with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and with the Detroit Civic Light Opera Company. C., September 1,2, and 3. The retreat is a part of' a program begun last year on the back ground and needs of the stu dents and the demands of the post-college world upon gradu ates. The formal opening of the 88th year of consecutive ser vice of Johnson C. Smith Uni versity was held at ten o’clock, Thursday morning, September 16. Registration for upperclassmen took place on Wednesday, September 15. New students reported on Thursday, September 9, for a period or orientation, place ment tests and physical exami nations. Approximately 200 new students enrolled. About 400 upperclassmen returned to continue their education. Mrs. Liston Joins Staff At Beckwith Mrs. Millie Ann Murphy Liston has been appointed to the faculty of - the Beckwith School of Music, it was an nounced by Mrs. Margaret ,D. Beckwith, president of the school. Mrs. Liston was formerly supervisor of music in the city schools in Oxford and has served as music consultant at the North Carolina Resource Education Conference at North Carolina College in Durham. New Courses Students "Will find two new courses offered this year in the Department of Economice. The Principles of Insurance will be one course dealing with the economic and social services and the techni|9|ues and underlying principles of in surance. The other new course is The Fundamentals of Real Estate, and it is designed to provide a broad social and practical foundation for stu dents interested in real estate. New Members of the Faculty President H. Liston has an nounced the addition of three new faculty members. Dr. Ste phen Klepka, A.B.,A.M.,Ph.D., will join the faculty as Pro- feuor of History. Dr. Klepka is from St. Louis, Mo., and re ceived hif doctorate from Washington University. Mr. Jesse W. Knuckles of Uaurenburg, N. C., will Join the staff*of the Business Oflice as Bookkeeper.
